I listened to the City Council meeting on radio last evening, and was glad to hear they are thinking about putting the meetings on TV. The City Council should be commended for taking this first step.

I still have my $600 donation waiting to be used toward wiring, mikes, etc remodeling our county boardroom in the courthouse construction.  Since my idea of a city/county boardroom has been nixed (even though the city of Rochester and Olmsted County are sharing a boardroom and have public access broadcast from there) I've come across information from Marshall, MN.  They had equipment that was portable and could be checked out to video public events to be aired.  If we had portable equipment (digital camera, a couple of PZMs (pressure zone microphones)  we wouldn't be limited to  one meeting room, and city council, county board, school board, watershed board, zoning board, etc  could be taped no matter where they were located, no special wiring needed!  I think that's an even better idea than for everyone to have to meet at one place to be taped.  Wouldn't it be great if we could buy the equipment jointly, city/county working together!

Here's a link to public education government tv, PEG, in the state of MN, to show you what other communities are doing.

I was over in Red Wing this summer, on the public access channel, they had a video of the City Council meeting.  They appeared to have a voice-activated microphone on the camera--whoever was speaking, the camera would pan to them.  It worked pretty well, unless people tried to interrupt one another.

It eliminates the objection of "we would have to have a cameraman".  If we DID have to have a cameraman, how about Ron Gabrielson--he has experience with microphones and tape recorders! :D

Dan- that sounds like a good idea (joint meeting room), I wonder why anyone would object to it?

Guest- If all you have to say is vague insults, don't you think you could at least give an example for that one?

Dan, that's a great idea, however, there's a couple of reasons it wouldn't work.

1.  The city and county don't seem to be able to share things, i.e. any departmental duties.

2.  The county doesn't seem to want to allow a fund to be started, even if it's strickly thru donations.

3.  And finally, if you bring it up at a county board meeting, the vote on it will be 4-1   :D

Jim, don't you think it would be better if our vertically challenged attorney would be the camera man, that way he'd have an excuse for not sitting where he's suppose to.  :p

If they would use the bathroom advertising money to finance the camera equipment, they could have it paid for in say......3-5 years.

I have a question about the city/county sharing meeting space.  When it was originally brought up I believe the County wanted the City to have their meetings at the new county faciality and help pay for it.  Why wouldn't the county ask to share the city's meeting space?  These are the reasons that I think that makes more sense:
1. They are currently useing it.
2. It is already set up for airing on the radio.
3. It is already built, couldn't the meeting space be eliminated from the courthouse and that money could then be saved?

Dan, any reasons that having the meetings at the current city location would not work?

Guest--I assume you are referring to this segment, above.

Being civil does not mean keeping your head in the sand or refraining from contact.  Civility means "refraining from rudeness".  It might be rude to call somebody "stupid", "corrupt", or a ******* without basis, but if there is an element of truth to it, it is not uncivil.  There would be NO news or humor without these kind of observations.  Can you imagine what would be left to comment upon on Saturday Night Live, the Daily Show, or any standup comic?

In this case, it is indisputable that Mr. Gabrielson DID indeed have "experience" with unplugging microphones and breaking tape recorders.  Certainly, bringing up these items is more civil than the very act being spoken of.  I don't find that uncivil at all.

Guest, (with the big G) your ideas are good, but let's take it one step further.  The courthouse design has already been done and the commissioners' room will be built.  It would be easy to add the equipment and wiring for audio and video to it when the interior is done.  If the city would share this room with the county, their old chamber would be vacant, and how needs more space in the city center?  The library, they could move a portion or section of their overcrowded areas there, thus eliminating another need.

The only problem with your idea Maddog is that the library staff (ie the librarian) only wants all new.  From what I have heard, they wont settle for less.

It is too bad that the combining meeting facilities did not come up before the courthouse plans were finailzed.
