BYRON, MN -- The list of places you can't smoke is getting longer and longer and if one group gets their way, your own home might be next.
The anti-smoking ball is rolling but smokers say the latest plans are crossing the line.
This is one that even some non smokers think is The idea is an apartment smoking ban, meaning no matter how much you pay for rent, it won't be enough to give you the right to smoke in your own place.
First, they were booted from restaurants.
Then the smoke cleared in all workplaces.
Now, you could be forced to put it out in your own home.
Renter April Shenk says, "I think it's unfair."
Shenk has been renting for years and doesn't think anyone should be able to tell her what she can and can't do in her apartment.
Shenk says, "I didn't sign on a dotted line saying I own this property but I pay for it every month. I take care of it. So essentially, to a point, it is mine."
But one anti-smoking group targeting Minnesota wants to leave the decision up to landlords.
This week they're beginning a campaign that encourages landlords to outlaw smoking in their buildings.
They say they've gotten a lot of calls from tenants complaining about smoke drifting into their apartments from other units.
Property Manager Mike Pike says, "We need to make it healthy for people that don't smoke. They shouldn't have to breath smoke. That's true. There's no question about it. But people should also have the right to do things in their home."
Pike says at some point you have to draw a line.
He says, "Boy I tell you there's going to be a lot of problems."
For one, the decision could cost property owners money.
Pike says renters won't quit smoking, they'll just rent elsewhere.
So for now tenants at his place can continue to light up freely.
Good news for Shenk who says things have gone too far.
Shenk says, "Enough is enough. You can't do this to us anymore."
Shenk says he and the property owner have given some thought to making one of their 6 buildings smoke free and giving tenants the choice, but even that would be a tough transition.
On the other side, anti-smoking groups still have millions of dollars from the state's settlement with tobacco companies to spend on campaigns against tobacco and second hand smoke, so it's a pretty safe bet that this issue won't be going away quickly.

First of all, it's not in your own home, it's in rentals. If it were in your own home there would be no way for them to inforce the law.
Second, I think it's a good idea. Rentals are nasty after a smoking renter leaves. Not only that, you can smell it up and down the hallway.
I hope someday smoking will be out of our lives for good. I'm in the process of quiting. It's hard. It's a huge addiction and it pretty much takes over a persons life.

And expensive. Trying to quit also. And I agree, smoking can ruin paint and wall-paper and it is hard to get the smell out. Plus it is a fire hazard. I don't think it should be a law but landlords should have the choice. But who is going to monitor this? Who has time to monitor it?

I thought cigs weren't drugs and cannabis was. Hrmmm, funny, I don't see pot heads jones-ing for a fix.
"Out of our lives" as in creating even more criminals. Good call, the cops are gonna love you. The more things we criminalize, the more criminals we can create.

Cannibis has a rather sweet, succulant, yet smoky aroma, while cigs just smell like crap!

Umm, we're talking about nicotine here now Einstein. Better reread the thread and figure out where your brain short circuited.
