From Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

The Albert Lea Tribune will print an apology to resolve a complaint brought to the Minnesota News Council by State Auditor Pat Awada, the council said Wednesday.

On July 25, the newspaper printed a story about a proposed law to regulate companies that verify the sales of telemarketers. It included information from a press release from state Sen. Dan Sparks, DFL-Austin, regarding Awada.

The story also cited unidentified news reports in reporting that a verification company owned by Awada had been financed by Elam Baer, a telemarketing executive whose companies were being investigated in several states.

Awada complained that the story presented the relationship between her company and Baer in a way that suggested that she had broken rules when she had not. She said her company had not received financing from Baer.

The story also reported that Awada's company shared office space with Baer's companies, which it did not.

Awada complained that the newspaper did not call her before printing the story.

The Tribune agreed to publish an apology calling statements in the story "false and misleading" and acknowledging that it did not attempt to contact Awada or check the facts in Sparks' news release.

The News Council, made up of journalists and private residents, typically holds public forums on grievances against the press. Its findings carry no sanctions, and people bringing complaints before it waive their right to sue.

That's really funny.  Considering how the Tribunes been known to print stories in the past that are just handed to them by elected officials.  Maybe Dylan should have checked with the "State" before printing that story.

This is so exciting!  We made a big city newspaper!  Last time this happened was the big fire!
Too bad nothing good is ever written but I guess you need something good to happen to write about it.
