I have read that farmers need to be careful when accepting sludge to be land applied onto their properties, because if your land becomes contaminated to the point where it becomes hazardous and/or toxic beyond allowed limits, then you may be responsible for the clean up. Also, only about 2-3% of the sludge has any potential use to the soil or crops. The sludge is very high in phosphorous, but very little is readily available for plant intake, while the rest is tied up and binded within the sludge. Also, very little nitrogen is available within the sludge.

There seems to be a contradiction in whether the business which dumped the moly in the sewer is being fined or not. Check out the comments of the two council members on FreebornCounty.com. $400,000 to me is a lot of taxpayers dollars going down the drain to prop up some business. This sludge problem is bad enough with out making it worse! Does anyone know what is happening with this situation, as the council memembers seem to be at odd ends with it.  ???

The real question is whether your water plant inlet is upstream or downstream from your sewer plant outlet!

Frustrated--that is one of the few things the Russians had right--very few environmental laws, but the one that DID make sense was the one that you cited--all discharges must be upstream from intakes! :p

The treatment plant discharges into the Shell Rock--look at the 176 page document the Watershed Board came up with--the discharge is a major part of the flow of the river--yet the watershed Board report suggested MN & IA "encourage recreational use of the river, canoe & Kayak, with primitive camping areas".  Just what I'd want to do! :p

LOL The Shell Rck may be cleaner today then it was 25 years ago. But if I remember right the land on both sides of the Sell Rock is privite property all the way to Iowa, except where the wildlife management area is by the Iowa Line
