I was going to post the link to the Mason City Globe Gazette but they have a updated article now.
Tim Mammen (the murder victim) referred to Eric Esse as "Eric of the North". Esse would come around asking for money and instead of just giving it to him, Mammen would have him draw or do odd jobs for it. Esse must have been a artist of sorts.
Then Eric...being the true "viking" he was... borrowed his friends 22 caliber pistol and came down on Thanksgiving to pillage and plunder...and murder.
You know...there are many more Erics out there doing meth right now as we speak...

And there could be one living right next door or just down the block...

Quote | MASON CITY — Murder suspect Eric Esse told Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation agents that he watched a mutual friend shoot Timothy Mammen four times in the head during the early morning hours of Thanksgiving day.
On Thursday in Cerro Gordo County District Court, prosecutors played two interviews, lasting a total of six hours, which were conducted by two Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Agents on Dec. 2.
Telling several different stories during the early stages of the homicide investigation, Esse admitted taking $850 and a significant amount of methamphetamine from the alleged shooter in exchange for his silence. Globe Gazette

Quote | In one version of the story, Esse told DCI agents Jeff Jacobson and Jim Wertz that he watched a man named Scott Peterson shoot Mammen in the back of the head at close range.
Esse first told the agents that he received $300 and a significant amount of “crank,” a street name for methamphetamine, to keep quiet.
He admitted to taking methamphetamine on both the evening of the murder and the day of the police interview.
Later in the same interview, Esse said Peterson gave him $850 and “more crank than I’ve ever had at one time.”
He told the agents Peterson arrived at Mammen’s house after he had been there for a while.
Esse said Peterson gave him the money and crank before the shooting took place.
He said he was sitting on the bed beside Mammen when Peterson produced a “Saturday-night special”-type handgun, and shot Mammen from within a range of three feet.
“He shot him in the back of the head,” Esse told the investigators. “Bang, bang, and he shot him on the ground. It was almost like he just passed out.” Globe Gazette

Nope...he borrowed his friends gun..fired it 4 times into the back of Mammens skull and then returned it to his friend. When the police recovered it...it had been fired 4 times...
I'd be interested to hear tell his fathers first hand account of his sons decent into drugs and murder. Eric Esse could a poster boy for how meth has affected the midwest rural areas.
I'll offer $500 for the rights for the story, so I can make my own short film. I'll bring it all home for the world to see...
