Let's hire an architect to do our study he has no vested interest. I'll bet if they do build they'll hire a different architech and they told this firm its only going to do the study so that the information they receive isn't biased.

Or did they??

Faribault Co. seeking options for its jail
By DAVE SMITH

Sentinel Staff Writer

BLUE EARTH -- Faribault County commissioners believe it is time to create some options.

Sheriff Scott Campbell on Tuesday recommended the county hire a firm to draft plans for a new county jail. Commissioners agreed, with Loren Lein in dissent.

Campbell brought the recommendation from a committee assigned to investigate what to do with the overcrowded and aged jail.

He said the committee advised hiring Vetter and Johnson, a Minneapolis-based architectural firm, to put together plans for a new facility.

Campbell said the agreement calls for the study to be completed by January 2005, with the cost not to exceed $18,500. The study will include several options, such as sharing a regional facility with other counties.

Vetter and Johnson will provide the jail planning committee, commissioners and the public with regular updates.

The jail has problems related to plumbing, parking and crowded administration areas. Campbell said police interviews are being conducted in areas without privacy and breathalyzer tests are conducted in a hallway because there is no other place. Evidence storage is another problem.

Lein said he was not against a jail, but wanted commissioners to be able to do some more research before committing to the nearly $20,000 price tag of the study.

"We need a jail, but we need to do some homework first," Lein said. "We should check out what others like Martin County are doing."

Campbell said the planning process will consider options such as sharing regional jail costs.

Lein said he wanted the commission to look at it before getting Vetter and Johnson, whom he referred to as the "salesman," involved.

"We need to look at it ourselves," Lein said. "We can hold off one meeting."

"We've been looking at ourselves a long time," Campbell replied.

Commissioner Paul Meyer said the jail issue has been before the board for too long and steps needed to be taken before problems arise that constitute major expense.

Commission Chairwoman Barb Steier, who also serves on the jail committee, said it is time to get someone who is more knowledgeable involved.

"We don't have the expertise to go further," she said.

They are the latest rage.  Every community needs a new one.  Does anyone know how they will convert drug to treatment facilities when the law changes?

Jail bed surplus drives down rent price in WI.
(economics 101)
The glut of new jail beds= lower price on renting those beds

Will this also happen Here???

Housing inmates Dunn County WI. March 2003

The County Board entered into an agreement with Pierce County through Dec. 31, 2003, for the lodging of prisoners in the county jail.

Dunn County will house at least 14 Pierce County prisoners a day at $45 per bed. Pierce County may also rent additional beds for $55 a day.

The plan will provide at least $207,000 in revenue for Dunn County.

The County Board has previously approved the lodging of non-county, non-Huber prisoners at the rate of $60 per day, unless otherwise authorized.

Because of the glut of new county jail beds becoming available in other counties, it was "deemed in the best interest" of Dunn County to approve the $45 per bed rate.
