Why should I

um ... to make money?

I understand how you feel about the rest of it. Did you talk to who ever is in charge of the mall activities? If so, what did they have to say?

The ideas that you mentioned were very good ... perhaps you need to convey this to mall management. The only idea I don't see making it is Karaoki. The people I've seen doing this usually enjoy drinking along with the fun. I don't think the mall has a lic. for that.

I think Spidey makes a good point here Geo.  You've got a lot of good "gag-gift" items, and darts, pool sticks, etc.  But if you did some of the things she mentioned I think it would help, especially on craft/miscelaneous sales days.  I know of stores, in malls too, where most of the time when theirs one of these weekends with booths set up thru the mall it will double or triple sales for the store.

I don't understand why merchants in malls aren't supposed to compete with each other with the same type of items?  Both malls in Albert Lea have rules against it.  I don't think anyone in business should be against competition, so I don't see how it makes a difference if its in a mall.

So Geo are you also apposed to having shows at the mall like when they have the science fair computation? Or when the high school kids walk through for Prom?  I would think that all the shows would bring more people to the mall. Doesn’t more people coming to the mall mean more opportunities that some might stop in to your store. I have never been to your store but the next time the mall has a show going on I think I will stop in and take a look around.     :blues:  :)

Mel from my earlier post

If the Mall would do things that would invited the family, such as an indoor carnival, karaoke family night, Story telling, Such things would enhance shopping and keep money in the community. The Mall bringing in seasonal business that is in direct competion with the merchants here is why Up North and Gilbertsons Left.

I am against bringing in merchants that are in direct competion with the merchants already doing business here

Guess I have to agree with Spidey, "make lemonade"  your store front should be more appealing, less crowded in the front, more inviting, then talk to Distad about your tax concerns.

We're not trying to put the store down geo, just trying to give you some (we hope welcome) suggestions, like finding out the theme... bridal, fine, put out some computer programs emphasing bridal planning, etc. You are in the perfect location for it. Its all in the eye, first impressions of what your store has to offer.

I am not saying I am not making money I think it is time change the background music to something other than the 40 and 50s era. I am saying the mall needs to enter the 21st century. I had to arrange the store to its present configuration due to secuity and shoplifting issues. I have out grown my space and increase my inventory and product lines.
By being out by the traffic I have incresed my business with this configuration.

I am also going as far to say in the statue I posted even those flower sales people who set up on the corners and people who sale perfume in the bars and pictures under the working my way through college need a lic.
BTW 50 % off at Threads another store closing here. Hy-vee is leaving too.

I am saying the if this was enforced throughout the city a need for a half cent sells tax my be eliminated for an extended period of time.

I am saying the Mall made a poor choice in putting the crafts store in the mall for the christmas holiday selling the same products gilbertsons sold. which cut drastically into their sales. 35 percent of retail business yearly sales is between the day after thanksgiving and dec 31.

Lets say they sold  15,000 dollars in that five weeks and they are not from Albert Lea They will file their sales tax in the city in which they are based with that revenue going to that city and leaving Albert Lea which is 975 dollars and if they are not from MN the state also lost in revenue completely.

Lets leave the store out of it and get to the real issue taxing us to death is not the answer we need to stop letting potiential revenue slip threw the cracks.

Hy-vee is leaving too.

They had no definite plans to stay past the holiday season in the first place.

Ok Geo ... you are obviously offended by my suggestions. I didn't mean for this to become an attack on you, I was only trying to give you some suggestions for making more profits while you fight against all of this other stuff. I am not new to marketing and Retail, so my intentions were strictly professional and trying to help out a fellow entrepreneur.

Good luck with you fight against the mall. Just be careful, you may get what you wish for.
