Residents may receive District 194 communications by e-mail Posted: 1/16/04
by Tad Johnson Thisweek Newspapers
Parents of Lakeville Area School District students who wake up some mornings and see snow steadily falling from the sky will be able to find out if their child’s classes are delayed or canceled by the click of a computer mouse.
The district has activated “list serve” technology, which will allow district residents and others to sign up to receive e-mail notices and news from Lakeville schools.
“We are going to try to encourage as many people as we can to get involved and sign up,” said Linda Swanson, district communications coordinator.
Among the information the district aims to disseminate include electronic district newsletters, school newsletters, calendar of events, and school closing and delay notices.
If residents sign up, they shouldn’t be concerned that they will be flooded with e-mails from the district, according to Swanson.
“We are going to be very sensitive to that,” Swanson said.
In addition to getting information to district residents in a timely manner, the district also aims to save money on mailing and printing costs by sending fewer paper communications through U.S. mail.
“The board had this as one of their top priorities,” said Superintendent Gary Amoroso. “This is a great step.”
Residents who want to sign up for the “list serve” can go to the district’s Web site at www.isd194.k12.mn.us. There they will find information about signing up on the main page.
After clicking to the registration page, parents will need to fill in their e-mail, name and password. Those who sign up will have a confirmation e-mail sent to them.
“You will need to confirm it so we don’t have people singing other people up,” Swanson said.

Great idea except what if the electricity goes out. Then they will be back to getting out the battery powered radios.

Another idea. Elected officials who actually think for themselves and talk to employees!!!
Gaylord: County still needs improvement Posted: 1/16/04
by Laura Adelmann Thisweek Newspapers
Creative brainstorming sessions with increased public involvement is part of Commissioner Kathleen Gaylord’s vision of how Dakota County government should improve.
First-year reminiscing, Gaylord sees some progress toward her vision in the past year.
She cited a more detailed budget process and online budget survey as evidence, but still desires forums that allow commissioners free-thinking input into issues.
Too often, Gaylord said, topics are over-processed by county staff; commissioners merely discuss predetermined options that typically ascend from bad to better, and of course, the recommended choice: best.
“I want the opportunity to have more board-level discussion about our options, not have someone else provide one preferred option that moves forward,” she said.
Gaylord calls current protocol too “staff-centered,” and said interaction between board members and county employees, rather than just staff heads, could yield great opportunities for innovation....
Whether her vision will ever be a reality is questionable. Gaylord said county officials are satisfied with the way things are done.

Look to Waseca for another good idea. They get more money for their collaborative and now grants for their city. It shows what competent leadership and staff can accomplish!!!!!

Grant helps Wasecans fix up their properties Nearly $1.2 M came from state By Nicole Christiansen
Free Press Staff Writer WASECA — Free money, anyone?
Wait, there is a catch. The money must be used to fix up your house.
If the deal still doesn’t sound that bad and you live in Waseca, a piece of the $1,183,300 Small Cities Development Program Grant the city received may have your name on it.
The grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development is designed to help single-family homeowners rehabilitate their properties.
“To an income-qualified household, these dollars could assist in making the needed repairs as well as fund projects to improve roofs, siding and insulation, window replacement, electrical improvements and plumbing and heating repairs within the target area,” Community Development Director Mark Leiferman stated in a news release.
Waseca officials first targeted downtown and the southwest part of the town, but they’ve received only a few single-family applications.
They’d like to dole out 25 grants before the fall deadline.
Now the target area has expanded to include much of southeast and central parts of town.
The city targeted southeast Waseca for drain repairs to prevent storm water from getting into the sanitary sewer system. Property owners are required to make those repairs or face noncompliance penalties.
The residential grants are designed to help fix up 25 single homes and 28 apartment units. There is $352,500 available for owner-occupied improvements and $329,700 to go toward rental-occupied improvements.
Commercial areas aren’t excluded from the grant. The grant’s commercial rehabilitation component has $274,000 — provided through matching 10-year deferred loans — to help 20 of the 54 businesses in the target area renovate their buildings.
Painting, new signage, new awnings, new windows and doors, roofing work or accessibility projects are all eligible for this state funding.
The grants are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The concept is interesting and well-formed, but in order to earn better than a 'C,' the idea must be feasible. - Yale professor in response to Fred Smith's paper proposing reliable overnight delivery service. (Smith founded Fed Ex)
