Smoke from Canadian wildfires reaches US, Minnesota under air quality alert
Over 100 active wildfires in Canada have led to wildfire smoke drifting into the United States, prompting Minnesota officials to issue the state's first air quality alert of 2024.
Several of the Canadian wildfires have been labeled "out of control," with 40 out of the 140 active fires falling into this category, while the majority of the active wildfires, 91 in total, are located in British Columbia and Alberta provinces.
Minnesota's air quality alert, in effect through Monday, was prompted by an Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching "unhealthy" levels, with some areas recording AQI levels above 200, placing Bemidji, Minnesota, among the worst air quality locations globally.
