AL real estate will probably hit a nasty level then some enterprising  folks (maybe LeFarvre) will start buying it up, turn AL into a bedroom community.

shiny new school, shiny new courthouse, shiny new firehouse and city garage on the way,  not to mention tiger hills I and II...
Build it and they will come...

I doubt that those government sponsored building qualify as being new anymore. heh

What is it after 8 years for residential housing, not considered 'new' any more?

The far west side of Austin where the proposed facility is going is pretty darn close to Albert Lea.

It's almost in Freeborn County.

And out of the hard stink perimeter of the plant. ( I think so anyway lol)

Looks like AL couldn't have afforded HyVee

http://www.albertleatribune.com/2017...-hy-vee

On the bright side maybe AL could be absorbed as a suburb.

We offered them 10' s of millions and it didn't work? Did we explain we had a full time fire department, new school, and courthouse?

I saw a thing on the local PBS TV station a while back involving some Minnesota statehouse committee meeting involving economic development.

There were some folks in areas up north where they said they were committing all their funds to tourism.

Albert Lea has lake clean up funds and hotel taxes for that.

But still. You look at the outlay for staffing the local economic entity over the past. . . I dunno how long has it been?

Just that alone probably winds up being a pretty significant amount

Perhaps that could have been used to buy more access on Albert lea lake. Enhance the fishing access around all lakes.

I see people fishing on the spot between Main and Bridge. It's a shambles along there.

Why hasn't anybody ever fixed that up?

Would it ruin the vibe? heh

Yeah don't say anything bad on social media. They've had decades to perfect their little stories that they put out to the local paper.

It seems just as crass as anything to be crying about all the millions you offered. . .

Show us some maps of all the great I-35 and I-90 access points you have instead maybe.

Albert Lea's leadership is replete with useless idiots. Austin's leadership is replete with slightly less useless idiots. That was enough to make a difference, I guess.

Austin's last two attempts at bitchfest discussion forums died off when Facebook came to town. Albert Lea's rolls on. People notice that sort of thing.

The Tribune publishes every conviction from jaywalking to speeding. Plus you have frequent visits to the Wayne and Paul Wingnut Show. The Herald reserves column inches for mostly upbeat pro-Austin/Hormel/Mayo junk, with a smattering of felon-in-possession-of-a-firearm-related stories. Kind of odd, the very different editorial styles of two newspapers that are owned by the same outfit. Nevertheless, people notice that, too.

In short, lousy leadership, and a bad image.

There's a lot of factors involved in locating warehousing for perishable goods, shelf-life on fresh meat is short, Hormel's location had more to do with HyVee's decision than any local Government.

The close proximity to the Hormel plant cuts transportation cost and increases shelf-life.

Austin has some say in their Utility costs, SMMPA may have cut a deal that Freeborn/Mower couldn't match. who knows..

It does irk me that we have to give Corporations large gift packages to get them to locate locally.
It's similar to the pro-sports teams that extort new stadiums from the taxpayer.
