Mass Sexual Attack in Germany Inflames Migrant Debate

BERLIN — German authorities said on Tuesday that coordinated attacks in which young women were sexually harassed and robbed by hundreds of young men on New Year’s Eve in the western city of Cologne were unprecedented in scale and nature.

The assault, which went largely unreported for days, set off a national outcry after the Cologne police described the attackers as young men “who appeared to have a North African or Arabic” background, based on testimony from victims and witnesses. More than 90 people have filed legal complaints, the police said on Tuesday.

The police in Hamburg also said that 10 women had reported being sexually assaulted and robbed in a similar fashion on the same night, and they urged witnesses to come forward.

Germany took in more than one million migrants last year, and with the country struggling to deal with the political, social and wider consequences of the influx, the delayed public response has led to concerns that the authorities were playing down the seriousness of the assault to prevent it from becoming a point of contention in the broader debate.

The assault took place late on Thursday on the vast public square in front of the city’s main train station, a central transit point for anyone coming or going from a fireworks display over the Rhine and the bars and nightclubs in the heart of the city, in the shadow of its landmark cathedral.

Heiko Maas, Germany’s justice minister, warned on Tuesday against linking the assaults to the influx of refugees, saying that the ethnicity of the perpetrators was irrelevant.

“The rule of the law does not look at where someone comes from but what they did,” Mr. Maas told reporters in Berlin. “We will investigate what circles the perpetrators may have come from.”

The Cologne police say they believe several hundred men, ages 15 to 35, were involved in the violence that began in the early hours of the New Year, after the square was cleared because men had been throwing firecrackers into the crowd.

Wolfgang Albers, Cologne’s chief of police, said the assaults had taken place in the chaos that followed, as the square was emptied. The men appeared to have broken into smaller groups, the police said, with each one encircling a woman; while some would grope the victim, others would steal her wallet or cellphone.

One victim reported that she had been raped, the police said.
Henriette Reker, Cologne’s mayor, called a crisis meeting on Tuesday to address the issue. Ms. Reker, who was stabbed during a campaign event in October by an attacker who opposed her welcoming attitude toward migrants, called the assault “absolutely intolerable” and pledged her support for the authorities’ investigation.

The city holds a large festival every year before Easter, when thousands of costumed revelers throng the streets to celebrate with parades and parties, and Ms. Reker echoed the concerns of many about safety during the Carnival season.

In an effort to prevent further violence, Ms. Reker said that city officials would begin working on measures to help young women protect themselves and to explain the city’s attitudes and norms to its many newcomers.

“We will explain our Carnival much better to people who come from other cultures,” she said, “so there won’t be any confusion about what constitutes celebratory behavior in Cologne, which has nothing to do with a sexual frankness.”

Cologne, with roughly one million inhabitants, is among Germany’s most ethnically diverse cities, and it took in more than 10,000 refugees last year, many of them young men from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. The city authorities said they would increase security after the assaults, as they continued to search for suspects.

The euphoria that accompanied the first wave of arrivals in Germany this summer has since given way to growing unease about the difficulty of integrating hundreds of thousands of people of a different religion and who were raised in a different culture.

Far-right and anti-immigrant groups in Germany, and others who oppose the influx, swiftly seized on the episode, saying it demonstrated the dangers associated with accepting huge numbers of migrants.

Lutz Bachmann, head of the anti-immigrant Pegida movement, accused German leaders on Twitter of complicity in the assault. In a post that named Ms. Merkel; her deputy, Sigmar Gabriel; and other politicians, Mr. Bachmann said, “You are all responsible for the abuse in Cologne!”

Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose unmitigated support for a migrant flow that has increasingly put her country under strain and caused political rifts in her own conservative bloc, used an annual event on Tuesday to call for mutual respect.

“We are all of the understanding that we respect everyone, even those who we don’t know,” the chancellor said in Berlin, where she greeted groups of children who celebrated the Epiphany by dressing up as three kings and collecting donations for charity or their churches.

The chancellor recalled that the country’s Constitution enshrines human dignity as inviolable. “This is true not only for Germans, but for all people,” she said.

MUSLIM IMMIGRATION IS EXACTLY WHAT ISIS WANTS
Immigration is what ISIS needs to defeat America.
December 25, 2015  Daniel Greenfield  100
2.9K275

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam.

To understand ISIS, you have to understand the difference between terrorists and Islamic terrorists.

Ordinary terrorists have two goals; to compel the enemy to meet their political demands and to rally their supporters to consolidate their class, race or national identity group behind them.

Islamic terrorists are not interested in the “political demands” part. They will occasionally accept concessions and even offer Hudnas, temporary truces, but no permanent separate peace can be achieved with them. It’s why Israel’s peace process with terrorists has gone on failing for decades. It’s why the attempt by Gaddafi to achieve peace with the LIFG ended in a civil war and his death. It’s why Obama’s attempts to negotiate with the “moderate Taliban” failed miserably.

Al Qaeda and ISIS are not “negative” protest movements formed in response to our foreign policy. That’s a foolish self-centered idea held by foolish self-centered Westerners. Al Qaeda and ISIS are “positive” movements that seek to achieve larger religious goals entirely apart from us. Islamic terrorists are not responding to us. They are responding to the Koran and to over a thousand years of history.

Osama bin Laden did not carry out 9/11 to inflict harm on Americans. That was a secondary goal. His primary goal was to rally Muslims to build a Caliphate by encouraging them to attack America.

The ritualistic “Why do they hate us” browbeating favored by the chattering classes is nonsense. Al Qaeda hated us because we were not Muslims. But it was only using us as the hated “other” to consolidate a collective Muslim identity. We are to Islamists what the Jews were to Hitler; a useful scapegoat whose otherness can be used to manufacture a contrasting pure Aryan or Islamic identity.

No dialogue is possible with an ideology whose virtue is premised on seeing you as utterly evil.

You can negotiate with terrorists, though you shouldn’t. But Islamic terrorists rarely even bother to negotiate. Their core focus is on rallying local Muslims and the Ummah behind them. They don’t recognize national borders so any hope for a permanent peace behind recognized borders is wishful thinking. Islam is a transnational movement. Islamic terrorism is a race between terror groups around the world to carve out their own Islamic states and then use them as a springboard to a Caliphate.

ISIS is the end stage of Islamic terrorism. Its leader is a Caliph with all Muslims obliged to submit to him. The Islamic State is not just in Syria and Iraq. It is everywhere that a Muslim outpost swears allegiance to the Caliph. On its own maps the Islamic State encompasses parts of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Russia. The more local Islamic terror groups pledge allegiance to ISIS, the bigger it becomes.

ISIS doesn’t plan to defeat America through acts of terrorism. The plan for defeating America, like every other country, Muslim or non-Muslim, is to build a domestic Muslim terror movement that will be able to hold territory and swear allegiance to the Islamic State.

The idea of an American Emirate may seem silly but consider Molenbeek, the neighborhood in Brussels known as the Jihadi capital of Europe, deemed a no-go zone by local authorities, right in the capital of the European Union.  You can take a taxi from NATO HQ to a Muslim micro-state linked to most of the major recent Islamic terror attacks in Europe including the latest ISIS attack in Paris.

Molenbeek provides ISIS recruits for its war and a gateway for ISIS attacks in Europe. The media is filled with articles about what ISIS wants, but there is no question that Molenbeek is what ISIS wants.

I'm not condoning what happened to all those women in Germany, but I do want to point out that this whole refugee problem that is happening is a result of our and our allies' meddling in other countries for many many decades. I know I sound like a broken record, but it IS the truth. In my opinion if a person is going to feel outrage over foreign muslims doing such things, then the person should also feel outrage over atrocities committed by US military. Rapes and killing of innocent civilians in foreign countries. Remember that little girl in Iraq? Repeatedly raped by several US soldiers then shot in the head, her parents murdered, her baby siblings murdered? A lot of allegations of rape and murder in many many countries, even countries we are not participating in war with, but allegations against US soldiers in our military bases in other countries. Once in awhile they're not just "allegations" but soldiers are tried and convicted. Crimes committed by US soldiers is the biggest reason most countries want our military bases removed from their countries.
How about the huge amounts of rapes committed by US soldiers against other US soldiers?   It's even been called an epidemic for crying out loud.
Blame and hate ALL US military personnel? We shouldn't, but we also shouldn't blame and hate all muslims or refugees either.
I have no idea how to fix the problems, but just don't start hating on all muslims and refugees. We're responsible.

So maybe instead of taking some stupid citizenship test which helps immigrants in absolutely NO way, there should be mandatory classes which actually teach them things. And stress America's laws will be your laws.

How do you go from talking about terrorists to linking to an article about Sharia law? We're buddies with a few Sharia law countries...so it must not be too bad.  :sarcasm:

Sorry Roz, "what about" does not cut it. This was an orchestrated, planned assault. They had put this whole thing together. Telling them that we don't do that here is not going to mean a thing. We tell gangs that we don't do that here also. How's that working? Bringing in more trouble into this country is not the answer to anything.

Ulf Küch, police chief in the city of Braunschweig, which has also suffered at the hands of small-time criminals from migrant backgrounds, told SPIEGEL ONLINE in November that the vast majority of migrants from the region are law-abiding. "We have found that very few immigrants commit crimes, but those who do commit a number of crimes," says Küch. Official statistics would seem to indicate that his impression is right. A study released in November by the German Federal Criminal Police Office on crime committed by refugees shows that the number of offenses perpetrated by migrants is rising much more slowly than the number of migrants coming to Germany.

Sorry Grassman, my comment about our laws will be your laws was in response to SB's link.

I understand what you are saying Grassman, I really do. I'm maybe just overly sensitive when I feel an entire group of people is held accountable for the actions of a few. ESPECIALLY, when WE are the ones responsible for all of it in the first place. Look at the anger and hatred directed at all muslims after 9-11, some of the comments in this very forum mirrored way too many american attitudes. Most people never even knew any of the people killed on 9-11, yet they were enraged, even saying "nuke em" "turn the whole middle east to glass" "kill em all". Imagine now, the anger some of the people from those countries have towards us and our meddling and our actions. Which have gone on for decades. Millions of people suffering and many dying slow agonizing deaths. Or whole families wiped out quickly by bombs. I've been surprised for a very long time that there aren't more and bigger attacks in western countries. Did anyone in this forum even mention Anders Behring Breivik and what he did? Maybe it was mentioned, I honestly don't remember seeing it. I guarantee if he had been muslim there would have been HUGE outrage. I never even heard one person talk about it.
I understand what you are saying Grassman, I just don't want anyone to conveniently forget that we are responsible for all of this. I feel, that for sure, women, children and elderly refugees should be allowed. Obviously needs to be tighter oversight when it comes to men. And deportation when there's criminal activity.

Yes, we could be more clear on how to collect welfare which some of them here in the cities have become quite good at.

There ya go again. Bitching about free handouts instead of actually contributing something useful to a discussion.

I was thinking more along the lines of having to learn english. Not that I am hateful towards other languages, I just think there would be far less problems if everyone living in the same country spoke the same language. I personally don't see anything wrong with that being one requirement.
Since most of the countries immigrants and refugees come from are quite different than ours I think it would be a great idea if they are taught about the differences. When I worked at Quality Pork, there were many people working there who didn't even understand how toilets work. Some didn't understand that it is ok to flush TP and #2. -They couldn't be told about things like this?
About 20 years ago I was living in Rochester. There was a lot of immigrants or refugees newly moved there. There were posters all over in different languages and ads on the news explaining that canned foods can't be opened and then just put back in the refrigerator in the can. They had to have these posters and ads out because people were actually dying from food poisoning. - They couldn't have been told about this?
A lot of refugees moved into Owatonna awhile back. They had no idea that they couldn't grow a garden in their apartment or house by putting dirt and plants on the floor and watering them... I think someone could have explained this to them?
I'm sure there are many other examples, and all of them far more important for new people in the country to know instead of knowing our branches of government or what the President's cabinet does.
I'm sure refugees/immigrants would be a lot happier, as well as born americans, and there would be fewer problems I'm guessing.

^^ why the hell would they learn English? If you were to go to the Arden Hills driver's license place you'd see translators helping these idiots take their tests and I'm pretty sure they're doing more than just translating, more like helping with answers.

I've mentioned this before, think about that when you're driving on the freeway with your Smart Car and look up to see these guys in 40'tons of truck with a cell phone stuck to their ear, or even texting.
