Cargill Inc. is selling the Schweigert brand of hot dogs and sausages to Bakalars Sausage Co. of La Crosse, Wis. Terms of the deal announced Tuesday were not disclosed.

Schweigert is a brand founded in north Minneapolis in 1937, and it’s the main hot dog served at Target Field during Minnesota Twins games.

Cargill, the Minnetonka-based agribusiness giant, picked up Schweigert in 2008 when it bought Willow Brook Foods. Most of Schweigert’s sales are in Minnesota, with smaller volumes sold in surrounding states.

Production of Schweigert products will shift from Cargill’s plant in Albert Lea to Bakalars’ operation in La Crosse. The Albert Lea plant specializes in cooked meats, especially for restaurants and convenience stores.

As a result of the acquisition, production is expected to be shifted from Cargill’s Albert Lea, Minn., meat processing facility to the Bakalars plant at La Crosse, enabling Cargill to expand its remaining operations at Albert Lea, the release said. The Schweigert brand was acquired by Cargill in 2008 as part of its purchase of Willow Brook Foods.

Slow death my ass.  Getting rid of the snout lips and ass line and expanding the numerous other product lines that Cargill produces in the Albert Lea plant doesn't do anything to contribute to decline.  It will be a net gain in jobs once the sale is complete and equipment is repurposed and adjusted.

Less hot dogs and more chicken wings, smoked meats, finished products.  Eh
