Quit spending the gas tax money on bike trails, Then we would be better off? Who needs them any way. I see the bikers using the streets instead of the bike lanes.

They should raise tax on crude oil not gasoline. I'm sick of hearing the BS line that oil companies barely make any money from producing gasoline. First of all, all the big companies are integrated. They own and run the whole shebang. Where does the biggest chunk of money go per gallon of gasoline? They figure in the price of their own crude oil into gasoline production when they spew they only make 7cents per gallon. What a crock. They don't pay much tax on the crude oil part at all. They also like to spout how incredibly expensive R&D is, but they get to claim 70% of those expenses as a tax write off. And claim up to 30% of damages in their own made disasters like the Gulf spill.
Taxes too high for oil companies. What a crock. Pass the cost of higher taxes on down the line. What a crock. - In this instance anyway.

You realize a tax deduction is on the TAXES paid, not the original cost.
They DO NOT get 70% off R&D expenses.

Which part got the facepalms SB?

Took me awhile to get to a system where I could copy and paste.

And GIL, that's not how I read this article. I'm not a tax expert, but I also don't get your take from reading the tax code in the second link below.

QUOTE
When Exxon Mobil wants to drill a well to look for oil, it can under present law "expense," or quickly deduct, the costs for labor, drilling and rig time. These are known in the tax code as "intangible drilling costs."

The code now allows independent oil companies -- mid-sized competitors such as Marathon Petroleum Corp and Occidental Petroleum Corp -- to recover 100 percent of intangible drilling costs in the first year.

The largest oil companies -- including the "Big Five" players Exxon, Chevron, BP Plc, ConocoPhillips and Royal Dutch Shell Plc -- can recover 70 percent of these costs in the first year.

Maybe CC can dumb down the IRS information for me.

I was wrong. Companies can claim up to 35%, not 30%.

QUOTE
Under U.S. corporate tax law, companies can take credits on up to 35 percent of their losses.

The credit for BP could mean, however, that taxpayers will indirectly foot part of the bill for the $20 billion fund that BP established to compensate people and businesses harmed by the disaster.

Because as I've stated on this site many times, when you increase costs to a business, any business, all that happens is that the costs are just passed along.

Ok, I understand that, but why don't you have a problem with the blatant lies coming from these big corporations and our government? The $0.07 profit on gasoline for example. Blatant lie. Since 80% of the cost of a gallon of gasoline is the crude oil. So in all actuality, these big companies are making a much much bigger profit than they admit to, right? Getting to take big tax credits when their disasters hurt their bottom line? Even their legal fees are tax deductible. The big banks and big corps are the ones running the show. It should be obvious by now. Hell, they don't just "influence" lawmakers with lobbyists anymore, quite often they are writing up legislation for crying out loud. How often has MSM told the truth about anything? The gas profit for instance?
MSM mainly just throws around BS. Their main topics are ANYTHING that will distract and DIVIDE us. Birth control, abortion, gun control. - I'm not saying those are not important issues, but how often did mainstream national news talk about the indefinite detention and stripping of rights powers that the government now has? How often have they talked about the water shortage problem? How much did you hear about that guy in Arizona who bombed the social security building, and how often did any reporter dig in to find out HOW that guy was even here or how he had so much money? How often do they talk about the horrible situation still ongoing in the Gulf of Mexico?
How often does the media or government tell us anything of importance? And how often is it pointed out how often and how BIG our leaders lie? And we just keep letting them do it.

***Edit***
How often did they talk about the reporters threatened with arrest for trying to cover oil spills? How many times did any government official speak out against such a thing happening? People should be outraged at the things happening and the direction this country is going.

Hey, the system we have is what it is, kinda f**ked but it's what we have to deal with with the gov. we have. So if we start throwing bums out of office, doesn't matter if the have an "R" or "D" after their name then we might get somewhere.

You are much more optimistic than I am.
Too many of us have their heads stuck too far up their butts, I don't see R's and D's losing control any time soon.
