This is getting carried away now. The day after this happened some news outlets were reporting this as a terrorist attack rather than an accident. These news outlets need to slow down and get their facts staight rather than look like idiots.

Or perhaps over-estimating the death toll. As many as 35 dead. Of course no one ever blasts CNN for getting it wrong.

I think most times it's not the news agencies that can't get their stories straight in their rush to get information out before others. Quite often the most conflicting information comes from "government sources". Look at news stories from most big events that happen, and sometimes on the same day with very little time between different news agencies reports, the news articles give information that they say they received from a "law enforcement source" a "DHS source" an "FBI source" a "White House source". It's like rapid-fire disinformation and makes it almost impossible to figure out what is really happening, and makes it almost impossible for us to actually share information and discuss things. It's no wonder most peoples' eyes just glaze over and most of us don't have a clue what is going on. It's too big a pain in the butt to try to figure out what the truth is. I'm going to put this video under the Boston Bomb thread, but it also fits in well with your comment. In case anyone doesn't know this woman, she's Sibel Edmonds, she's been a bigtime government whistle-blower who worked for the FBI. She's been able to get quite a bit of light shed on some pretty horrendous wrong-doings by the government. - Hardly any of it has made mainstream news, but there is a lot of information in congress notes, speeches and investigations.

They still have a lot of American weapons. Our media just isn't allowed to show footage of it, just like it's not allowed to show footage of a british soldier carrying a weapon because they're sold as peace keeepers in the U.K. and not as invaders.
The media outlets don't have to follow the rules but if they don't follow them they will no longer get embedded reporters and they will get shunned at news conferences.

Sorry if you don't agree with me, but, I stand behind what I said. I don't believe that Saddam was ever a threat to the American way of life, but, I do think the current administration is a big threat to the American way of life. The current administration has violated more americans civil rights than any other administration I can think of and it's all being done in the name of homeland security.

With the PATRIOT Act the FBI could have searched your house today when you were gone at work and they don't even have to bother letting you know they were there.
They can also force anyone(doctor, library, Internet service providers) to turn over all their records on you and you wouldn't know they had searched any of these things because they can prohibit the recipients of the search order from telling anyone about the search, even when there is no need for secrecy.(which obviously violates the recipients right to free speech)
The FBI could have initiated this whole investigation based solely on something that you posted on this forum. (which obviously violates your right to free speech)
The worst part of the whole thing is that the government is no longer required to show any evidence that you're an "agent of a foreign power," to initiate any of these investigations.

Thankfully, there have been no abuses of the system--yet. From CNN Civil Rights Complaints--
Quote The inspector general's office said 272 of those complaints came within its jurisdiction, but even many of those complaints "do not raise issues" that call for its investigation.
You must have missed the first paragraph where it said Quote
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The internal watchdog of the Justice Department has found 34 new credible civil rights and civil liberties violations under the anti-terrorism USA Patriot Act, according to a report released Monday.
Also the paragraph directly over the one you posted. Explained that there were 34 civil rights violations in that 6 month period that were deemed credible and are being investigated.
Quote
For the period of December 16 to June 15, 34 allegations were deemed credible and are being investigated by various officials within the department. Those 34 were among 1,073 complaints received during the period that suggested a Patriot Act-related civil rights or civil liberties connection. --
What a difference a few years makes. You want to be an a-hole, I can be an a-hole too. Things have gotten way worse since back then, and people should be allowed to talk about the problems we face without fear of being bashed, or having threads completely destroyed by ridiculous arguments focusing on one little thing that you think you can twist to discredit everything else somebody says. Things are not going to magically get better all on their own, and unless one of the Messiahs shows up we're on our own in a huge pile of crap that gets bigger every day.
