No, the scripture your reading is referencing the past. He's referred to as her husband because he later became her husband. For example if I was to tell a story about your wife's first day of school and referenced you in it I would call you her husband. That wouldn't mean you were married and she wasn't, on her first day of school.
Now about the espoused wife, just to be clear are you agreeing that it doesn't mean "wife wife" but that it means a wife where the marriage has not been consummated?

How can this be so difficult for you understand? Espoused means marry.
es·pouse transitive verb \is-ˈpau̇z also -ˈpau̇s\ : to express support for (a cause, belief, etc.) es·pousedes·pous·ing Full Definition of ESPOUSE
1 : MARRY 2 : to take up and support as a cause : become attached to — es·pous·er noun Examples of ESPOUSE
The new theory has been espoused by many leading physicists. Those espousing unpopular views were often excluded. Origin of ESPOUSE
Middle English, from Anglo-French espuser, from Late Latin sponsare to betroth, from Latin sponsus betrothed — more at spouse First Known Use: 15th century Related to ESPOUSE
Synonyms marry, match, wed Antonyms divorce RELATED Words commit, engage; affiance, betroth, pledge, promise
No, it's not referring to the past. BEING her husband is not the same as going to be her husband.

Espoused wife means pledged or betrothed.. Unless you believe they are referring to Mary as his "married wife" or "wife wife" when she is called his "espoused wife".
I can't help you out on the husband thing, it's apparently a reading comprehension thing, because the verse you mention is prior to the verse referencing the angel's chat with Joseph and Joseph waking up and deciding to marry her.
Here is the larger part of the NIV and you can see at the point they call him her husband it would be chronologically impossible because the sentence prior to it sets the time frame by saying that after she was pledged to Joseph but before they came together he found out she was pregnant. Also you might notice the the KJV uses espoused in the verse and the NIV uses "pledged to be married to" in place of the word espoused.
QUOTE This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:18-21 NIV)

"Wife wife." That made me laugh. Thanks.
