The Albert Lea school board approved a $218,000 purchase of iPads and accompanying equipment at its meeting Monday night.

Jim Quiram, director of human resources and technology for the district, said he’s presented to the board previously about the new technology. He said there was a price increase from the previous amount he had told the board because it was decided to purchase covers for the iPads, which increased the original amount he had reported.

Board members then inquired what would happen to the iPads after the school year, about whether they’d stay with the second grade or travel with the students to third grade. Quiram said that is something administration will be looking at throughout the school year, and that currently there isn’t money to purchase another grade level of iPads.

“Ultimately we’d love to be able to add a grade each year but we’ll have to look at budgets,” Quiram said.

Mary Williams, director of teaching and learning for the district, answered questions about what types of applications would be available on the iPads. Williams said the focus would be literary and math applications. The iPads will also have Internet, and Quiram said the same filters that apply to desktop computers would apply. That way students wouldn’t be able to get to websites the district doesn’t approve of.

I have a second-grader and as much as I'd like to play with an iPad, I'm seriously hoping they don't send those things home with the kids.  I don't want to foot the bill for a new one when it gets stepped on or smashed in his backpack.  And I know (well, hope) they'll be supervising the kids while using them, but someone's going to break one.  On a regular basis.  It seems like it won't be all it's cracked up to be.

From the Tribune on May 19th

QUOTE

The Albert Lea school board cut or reduced 17 positions Tuesday evening, visibly upsetting a crowd of more than 70 people who came to appeal to the board to spend more time on the decision.

The board voted 4-1 to pass the resolution reducing or cutting teaching positions for the 2011-12 school year. Board member Jill Marin voted against the measure and said she supports the realignment, but not cutting music teaching positions. She also spoke to high school students who were present to say she appreciated them and that they’re strong leaders.

“Our music parents and students are some of our greatest assets,” Marin said.

Board members Bill Leland, Linda Laurie, Mark Ciota and Jeshua Erickson voted to approve the budget reduction and resolutions to cut or reduce teaching positions. Board member Sally Ehrhardt was not present. After voting on the measure, several Albert Lea High School students were visibly upset — some were crying upon hearing the vote.

No, what I would do is have wireless keyboard on every desk connected to a large flat screen up front. Then give the teacher the ability to switch on and off all the keyboards individually.
This way a teacher can see each student use their keyboard individually while the class can as well. This is a much better teaching tool. All kids have a computer at home.

The school district needs to weigh carefully the needs from the wants.  the 218,000.00 they will spend on the ipad2's will go a LONG way to maintain the buildings and the grounds, it could hire back 2 to 3 teachers.  This amount of money being spent only pays for the ipad2's it does nothing to fund the maintenance of those items.  As was mentioned, they are easily broken items, just search ebay for "broken ipad".  I wouldn't personally put one in the hands of a high school senior let alone a 2nd grader.  People generally take better care of things when they themselves have to work to pay for them, give it to them and they don't seem to care. Just my 2 cents.

This type of crap is just dumb.  Waste of money and resources, and I guarantee these POS Ipads will get broken.

I was just going to reply and say didn't they let a bunch of people go, but Lib beat me to it.

The company I work for, does alot of work with the school districts down here, and they hand out laptops, desktop computers at every desk, and the kids don't care one iota for the equipment, keyboards get broke, mice are stolen or messed up, cdrom trays snapped off, ect.. and the laptops come back with broken screens, messed up keyboards, or just plain do not work.

All of this technology that they think is going to make kids smarter, is false.  It makes them dumber than the previous batch of morons before them.   Kids DO NOT need this to learn.
God what a waste of money.

My favorite quotes from below are:

"Some students seem to spend lots of time out of school on social networks with their iPads."

and

"It's easy to cheat with iPads."

I also like:  "So far, Bertrang said no iPads were broken; however, a couple students left school and did not return them"

Dr. Funk is running this district into the ground.  A computer cannot teach a kid!

Dr. Funk claims we MUST make budget cuts:

http://drfunknotes.blogspot.com/2011/04/situation-we-face.html

But then we can drop THOUSANDS in Ipads and on extra teachers for "those struggling to learn."

http://www.albertleatribune.com/2011...vacancy

None of this man's decisions will help the students of Albert Lea.  His arrogance is evident.  And you can bet he'll be leaving within 2 years and won't be around to make HIS kids attend the school district he destroyed.
