It's members only.  They HAVE opened Sunday brunches (discontinued for the summer) and Monday Bar Bingo to guests--private clubs are allowed to have 35% of their gross or 15% of their net from outside sources.  Right now, only Bingo is open to the public--Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday sessions, plus bar bingo on Monday.

It's been popular--it has resulted in attracting new members--but it remains a private club.  Members are allowed to bring guests, but guests are normally limited to three times.  Know an Elks member?  Have them bring you as a guest.  June 16, 1 3/4 pound live Maine lobsters.

How do you become a member of the Elks? Is the lobster something we might see again in the future?

You must:
Be an American citizen.

Be 21 years old.

Believe in a Higher Power

Not have a felony record (there are provisions for exceptions)

The Elks are first and foremost a charitable operation.  They are non-profit, and give away nearly $100,000 a year in money, mileage, and time.  Approximately sixty percent goes to youth activities, and 40% to community activities.

Dues are $55 a year.  It's a great place to eat, drink, and socialize--the club rooms are nice.  Rooms are available at no charge to members for weddings, class reunions, etc. (a cleaning fee may apply).

There is an altruistic motive in joining with other like-minded individuals.  I tell people that it's like going to church--except you can eat and drink better!

I'd be glad to have you (or any other Forum member) attend the lobster feast as a guest.  I understand they will be charging $29 for the entire meal.  PM me if you'd like to go.

It does.  We had just invested in creating a seperate smoking area 2 years ago.  It was voted to go non-smoking 3 years ago, but it was decided to not implement it until the smoking area was as nice as the rest of the club--upgraded air purifiers, lighting, tables--even a fireplace.  Once it was up to speed, the dining was segregated.

The only provision for restaurants and private clubs (other than Indian Casino's) is a "smokers patio" outside.  Many sections of the country comply by using a tent--complete with side curtains, and even propane infrared heaters.

Too bad--I think the accomodations worked very well--no complaints by smokers or non-smokers.

I just heard a rumor that somebody is purchasing the Elks building and will be opening it up as a bar.  Is there any truth to this rumor?  I notice there is a "For Sale" sign on the outside of the building.

I sure hope not! It is less then a block from an Elementary school that runs after school care/activites, as well as a fairly active playground.
