MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota state troopers are getting special training to help them battle the flow of methamphetamine into the state from western Mexico.

Nearly 90 of Minnesota's 425 troopers have gone through a federally funded course since last fall, along with 12 local officers who work for communities along interstate highways in Minnesota.

The course teaches them how to identify suspicious vehicles, conduct detailed roadside interviews, and detect signs that a vehicle has been altered with hidden storage compartments.

Drug Enforcement Administration and state authorities estimate that more than 100 pounds of meth produced and packaged by Mexican cartels arrives in Minnesota every month.

Federal authorities say Mexican cartels now control at least 80 percent of the meth sold in Minnesota.

How much of this meth crosses the intersection of interstate 35 and interstate 90?

OK...of course you realize these are simply drug war guesstimates, right? You're aware that no one actually gets all the meth and adds it up, right?

They say most of the meth is made in labs locally when it serves a certain purpose and then it all comes from the "Mexican mafia" when it serves another purpose. Take drug warrior rhetoric with a grain of salt. No, many grains of salt.  :;):

Something tells me that the course also teaches them how to avoid Miranda warnings (which really are nuisance to local police officers - just ask local detective Kohl), and perform searches that do not require a warrant, not to mention how to make unreasonable searches seem reasonable.

But, you're supposed to give up or fore-go your rights in order to be a good drug warrior. And if you don't, then you obviously have something to hide and are doing something wrong like dealing drugs yourself.

It's just like the war on Iraq. If you're not for it, you are not a real American and your loyalty to the flag will come under scrutiny.

Oh, BTW Miranda warnings have already been cut. Last year I believe.

AND our own Supreme Court Justice, the pride of all conservatives, Justice Scalia, has openly stated that the war on drugs outweighs the right to privacy.

Then we have a president who openly violates federal law, as recent as this weekend, when one of his own conservative House members, scolded George Bush in a letter for not disclosing to the Intelligence committee what is going on with intelligence, and that this could be construed to breaking the law.  By one of his own conservative House members.  So its not only "Liberals" that are concerned with George Bush breaking the law.

Good point.  People never seem to realize that Law enforcement could be feeding the public misinformation to try and create a need for increased funding.  If they tell you that there's not much meth coming from other countries and being transported across the interstates, guess who's overtime gets cut?
Why question the source, the media loves to jump on the "epidemic" bandwagon, since it's good for sales.
I'm not suggesting that meth isn't a big problem, because it is.  I just think people are too gullible.

Yeah, 100 pounds has a nice ring to it.  Doesn't really matter, they can use a magic eight ball to come up with their figures, since it's impossible to prove it wrong.

I agree with you that police departments can over step there boundries from time to time.  But come on if the law enforcement community didnt react to this problem and it started to impact your neighborhood you would be the first to b*tch about it.  I am so tired of the two faced attitudes in this forum, in one thread you for something and in another thread your against it.  For gods sake pick a horse and go with it.  Have the courage of your convictions to stand up for something.  Cuz if you dont stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

I agree with you that police departments can over step there boundries from time to time. --->That's sweet that you agree, but this discussion is about making up figures in order to manipulate public funding. Notice this is the highway patrol. They monitor the interstates so of course all the meth comes from out of state. And of course the Mexican mafia, not some biker gang like is more probable. This kills two birds with one stone you see. It makes Mexicans evil and helps keep the funding coming to the highway dicks.
But come on if the law enforcement community didnt react to this problem and it started to impact your neighborhood you would be the first to b*tch about it. ---->Is anything law enforcement does going to have any effect whether someone does meth?
I am so tired of the two faced attitudes in this forum, in one thread you for something and in another thread your against it. ---->Millions of people are addicted and die from tobacco addiction. How's that affect your life?
For gods sake pick a horse and go with it.---->Who are you talking too?
Have the courage of your convictions to stand up for something. -----Who is your?
Cuz if you dont stand for something, you'll fall for anything. ---> I stand for justice and fairness and the war on some drugs is neither.

This sort of nonesense goes on everywhere. Did you ever notice the fervor with which a TV news outlet will try to get everybody whipped into a frenzy, over next-to-nothing? Take rain. Rain used to be just another element of the weather forecast, but now it's almost an End of the World. I guess if you hype the negative, and inflate your statistics, you can get people to tune into your message through a sense of sheer panic.

I think the Third Reich was pretty good at this crap, too.
