Saw an article in the tribune about Mike funk and the district increasing our taxes for maintenance. Sounds like they can now do this without a referendum. What? Also found out that most teachers got a chromebook for their use in the classroom and in the future want one for all students. I'm thinking why do they need this when they have so many computer labs plus two ipad carts. Also am wondering how much funk gets paid.

Yes, sometime last year a law was passed allowing school districts to raise taxes without a referendum. However, I believe there are limited circumstances under which they can do that.

As far as chromebooks for students go, I am guessing that is ultimately cheaper than having textbooks for all the students. I'm taking college courses right now, and some of my textbooks have been over $200. They likely use the same publishers for high-school textbooks. And they probably get a huge discount on them, anyway. The school is not going to be charged the same for hardware/software as the public.

Right now their text books are not that old. So maybe instead of the chromebooks right now they could leave taxes alone. Use what they save on maintenance. Then in maybe oh 5-10 years from now when the textbooks are older then think about getting the chromebooks. Also at that time they could think about what maintenance still needs done and possibly raise taxes then. but yet again the district is like the city in a way because they don't hardly listen to us at times either.

The trick is in their budgeting. They cannot use money earmarked for one area for something else. I believe that that is actually a law.

I don't know what the life of a textbook is, but it's unlikely that they replace all of them at one time. They are bound to have to replace at least some of them every few years. Some of it depends upon when the publisher updates the text. There has to be a fortune in the textbook publishing industry.

I agree that those raising taxes don't listen to the people.

That was nice to see that they were going down for District 241. As I recall, though, the district's taxes weren't going up until 2017.

It's still nice to have some reprieve when every other entity is raising taxes because we have to have it right now because it will be nice and pretty and will only cost more later.
