This guy was walking along the deck railing one day. He stopped and actually looked at me  :D   I said, "Hi little fella" ... and he turned and shot web material. I don't know if that means he likes me or if he wants me for dinner  :p

Thanks White Pride. I'm not really a spider ... I just play one on the show the AL Forum.  :D   JK!

I might have to go through some of my pictures and see what I can come up with for a new avatar. I'm not sure I want to be a spider .. however, he is kind of cute.

I'm not sure, but I think this is a Wolf spider. I might be wrong.

So, you found that humorous, huh?  ???

Curious, why the 'boss' handle?

A nice heavy chunk of wood will take care of that sucker.

How big is it actually?  I'm sure it's magnified.  Cool eyes.  Wonder what he was seeing.

He was looking right into my camera lens with the first picture, so he was probably seeing his reflection  :)  He wasn't all that big. Maybe including his legs ... the size of a dime?

Here are shots taken when he was shooting webs ... err ... or at least I think he was shooting webs!  :p

I'm glad he was that small.  When I see a cow or horse raise its back end like that, it's time to get out of the way.  :p

Is that a macro lens you are using?
Posted by nzeroesc on Aug. 14 2008,5:35 pm
Posted your picture on a forum I found... This is the answer I got back.

This is a female jumping spider (family Salticidae) in the genus Phidippus, possibly the bold jumper, Phidippus audax. They are active hunters, having excellent (for spiders) eyesight.

On that note I really really need to get out and shoot more photos.

Thank you for the ID nzeroesc. I appreciate the time it took you to do this.

With that said ..

It is common courtesy to ask before posting someone elses picture. I'm surprised the website that you found didn't tell you that. Regardless .. just an FYI. You may run into photographers that would get very upset about something like that. Websites that are devoted to photography normally have an understanding.

And now ... with that said ....

I am not upset about it ... but it did feel a little weird.

If I was the size of that spider, and saw a massive black object like that bearing down on me, I think I would about-face and shoot something too!

  ... yes, but first it was though he was posing, bobbing up and down. It was really kind of funny.

Do you have a shutter hobby too? What kind of camera? What do you like to shoot? I always like to find fellow shooters  :D  Haven't really found too many around this area though.

I don't get out as much as I should.  just hard to find the time.  I shoot a lot of car shows and race weekends which crosses over to my other hobby.  Been renting any longer lenses I need from < http://www.lensrentals.com >  I have shot wildlife in the area, but nothing like the pictures you have shown.

Canon 30D
EF 50mm f/1.8 II
28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Found this about a jumping spider's vision:

When I nzeroesc said it was a female, I promptly submitted the pictures to PlayArachnid.  Bodacious spinnerets ya know.  Sorry!  I'll try to unsubmit them.

How does flood control give you a double post? Normally if I try to post too soon I just get a page that yells at me.

That's a very informative website ... kind of fun looking around on it.

Don't worry about posting my picture. I was just relaying the proper etiquette for other people's pictures. Some get very anal about it. If I post a shot that I really have an issue with, I either just won't post it, or I will stamp it.

Very nice pictures, but ew! I definitely wouldn't have been as calm as you were to take a photo, in fact, I would have run inside and locked the doors.  :help: (Exaggerating, a little bit...)

He wasn't very scary. Kind of little and was outside. When they are inside my house .. they become scary!

Maybe this one is more up your alley .. he's even smiling
