Last week I was driving on Hammer Road by the high school.
It was around 10:30pm. There was a police car parked off of the road with no lights on. Is that considered entrapment in
Minnesota? I grew up in southwest Iowa and I believe in Nebraska they have to have the park lights on otherwise it
is considered to be entrapment.
I was doing the speed limit by the way. :D

I don't believe it is considered entrapment, I remember them sitting in the front street parking lot of Queens (Lou Rich) near the tracks with the lights off in the 70's they  pulled over my dad once. He said they sat there every night watching for someone to blow the stop sign.

If you would simply abide by the rules and laws set you would not need to seek ways of getting out of trouble.

The law enforcement personal are doing their job! They are protecting the public from persons who do not think that the law applys to them or that they think that they can just get away with breaking the law. It used to be "if you can not do the time, do not do the crime". It seems that needs to be modified to " if you can not pay the fine do not do the time". Of course with the new jail i am sure that they will have plenty of room to house all those that abuse the system!!!  :D Read the court records & you will see that very few get jail time. I fully realize that it is a problem with space but what does that say to the offenders other than if they have the cash why not do the crime. The sheriff in AZ has the right idea. Build a tent camp out in the desert with out the frills & let them do their time!!!   Years back the young offenders were given their choice reformschool or the military. Not a bad deal as it might have been the first time that any of them recieved any discipline.

We can't do that because of the unfair and unjust drug war.

It's not black and white anymore. Cannabis users shouldn't even be charged, so it undermines police authority and respect.

The police are not your friend. They are guys out to destroy you for something as inocuous as cannabis.

Why are you laughing? The jokes on you because your paying for it and will continue to feel its sharp sting until they bury you.

Guest, I was just curious because where i grew up i believe it was illegal for them to do that. I've never had a speeding ticket and I'm not trying to get by with anything.

If you've ever violated a traffic law, it's your God given duty to turn yourself into the police and except the charges.

It's just part of our "You'll be as miserable as the rest of us in Albert Lea" policy.

Posted by jimhanson on Dec. 31 2003,1:02 pm
I don't think it is entrapment--they did nothing to "lure or tempt" or cause you to do something you wouldn't normally do.

I don't think it is right, though, for the police to be on the roadside without lights--after all, they tell the rest of us that we need to display lights on our vehicles "for safety".  If that is true, then they are putting the REST of us in danger by not adhering to the law.

The trouble is, is that the guys on the beat are more than likely in their 20's working their way up to a desk job like detective. Not only are men in their 20's driven by testosterone, they most likely joined the force for the promise of power. A major attractant to the job for boys.

Angel - In response to you original question, as Jim mentioned I don't think theirs any rule against them doing that.  In fact, one time way out in the country their was a couple squad cars following me with no lights on (no street lights, so no one could see them driveing around).  By the time my headlights shined on one in front of me, I saw one more in front hit the sirens and then two more behind me hit the lights.  This is back when I was a teenager, it turned out to be a mistake as they thought I was someone else, but they were following me all night.  Even if theirs a procedure somewhere against this example though (driveing with no lights), theirs nothing anyone could do about it.  Anyway, kind of an extreme example of what you mentioned, but I thought it was a good story (so was the hour long interrogation that followed).

OK, here is my entrapment story...
A few years ago, just outside Madison Lake, I was snowmobiling with a friend around 8:00PM.  We were playing it cool, it was actually our first ride of the season.

Anyway, we came to a road & didn't come to a absolute, complete stop (it was 8:00PM on a county road in the country with great sight lines & no traffic).  We continued on for another mile into the city Madison Lake only to be stopped on the edge of town by the local police.  No problem, we stopped & talked to the officer, he said a DNR officer wanted to talk to us.  About 5 minutes later, a DNR officer arrived & told us he was writing us a ticket for failure to stop at a road crossing.  We asked him where this happened & who was the complainant.  He said he was the witness.  We asked how that could be since we only saw one vehicle alongside that road, about an 1/8 of a mile down that road, pulled over on the shoulder with a headlight out.  He said that was his truck.  I told him, you realize you have a headlight out on your vehicle.  He said (with a chuckle), no I don't, it is a special switch, I can control whether 1 or both headlights function, no one would think it is law enforcement if a headlight is burned out, would they?  I couldn't believe it, then he actually showed us (you got to love it when law enforcement rubs your nose in the fact that they are above the law in some cases) how the switch works.  I was amazed.
Anyway, I paid the fine, a whole $70 if I recall and I guess I was breaking the law but to this day I find it unbelievable that the DNR can get away with bending the rules at any cost just to enforce a law.  If you think your local police have too much power, go check out your local DNR, you would be amazed.

Posted by jimhanson on Jan. 02 2004,12:46 pm
Good points on the DNR--I don't know if it is true in Minnesota--but I had a shrimp boat in Texas.  The DNR there have powers far beyond those of the police--they can board your boat at will, whether under way or at the dock.  They can pull your vehicle over without cause.  They can  come into your house without a search warrant--all "to protect fish and game".

There is no law specifically exempting them from the law--only that the courts have allowed it, finding it "ordinary and neccessary" in the performance of their job.  One more example of the judicial system gone awry.

Entrapment is when a law enforcement officer entices you to break the law such as a liquor sting however the minor has a realistic looking fake ID, and you are arrested for excepting the fake id as proof of age. Cops standing on the street corner selling drugs then arresting you for buying. Driving behind you waitting for you to screw up even with their lights off is not entrapment. You run a stop sign and no ones sees it you broke the law and didn't get caught.

Teens want to become police officers for the promise of power. That's what really tickles them deep inside and makes them lust to put of the uniform. Then, add to that the fact that many hot chicks aid and abet that fantasy by putting out for guys in uniform and we have a recipe for disaster.
Posted by GEOKARJO on Jan. 02 2004,2:44 pm
Yes sir They always wanted me to cuff them and use my night stick
Posted by 180 on Jan. 02 2004,2:51 pm
Have you ever smelled a squad car after a shift? Those guys wear Cologne by the ounce!

I know hot chicks with scanners who say they get called in all the time and have to protect themselves from horny officers who want to find out who they are.

Posted by black and blue on Jan. 02 2004,7:53 pm
180- i take it that you have been in the back of a squad car once or twice. you guys are a perfect example of what it means to stereotype a group of people.

yes, there are unfortuantley some bad apples that take the power and run over your front yard. but don't bad mouth those that actually look forward to putting on the uniform to help people and take the role of helping the community serious.

Posted by GEOKARJO on Jan. 02 2004,8:26 pm
It is a very special person that wears the uniform of a law enforcement officer

First on the scene to a motor vehical accident doing what is necessary to help, in fact he must determine what he must do to hopefully save your life, and when Barry went nuts those officers put their own lives at risk to ensure the saftey of the neighborhood.

I don't know what you think of Albert Lea's Officers but I have contact with many of them and they are a bunch of regular guys who would like nothing more than to be treated like a regular guy.

When he is off duty and when he on duty he is just that. He has a job to do and I have the upmost respect for that.

When they come in the Bar and do a bar check They are just looking for probation violaters. He isn't there looking to give you a D.U.I.

My experiance with them have been this, don't lie when they got you red handed accept your stupity and life goes on.

More than once I have said yes I was going a little fast and wasn't paying attention to my speed and was let go with a warning. As I said before they are regular guys. In fact very intelligent.

Why would you bash these guys when, one day, you are going to need them.

i just lost ALL respect for this forum by the post that "g-money" posted. ok you can hate the cops, thats fine. but last i checked this was a public forum and the vulgarity that you let stay on the forum is uncalled for.

I think hate's worse that vulgarity...
Posted by GEOKARJO on Jan. 05 2004,10:37 am
Hey minnow had a complete thought :D

People intelligent enough to operate a computer should be able to express themselves without resorting to vulgarity.  Let's keep it clean--it isn't just Forum members that read this stuff, there are a number of "lurkers" out there that read this, then take it down to their coffee groups.  I know of one lady that prints material from here and takes it to her adult Sunday School for discussion.

We know that several County officials regularly read this--we wouldn't want to offend their sensibilities! :D

OK...Funk the police!

i've had various encounters with lots of different kinds of cops - military, civilian, Resident Assistants studying criminal justice in college - some friends even.  Its been my experience that most are just plain stupid as well as being full of themselves and on a power trip.  Face it, the easiest major in college is criminal justice.  Military persons flunking out of technical training are sent to police school.  Realistically, who in their right mind would want to be a cop?

g-money must think his/her post was cute.  Even the minnow has refrained from posts like that.

g-money, reread Jim Hanson's last post and see if you still like your vulgar post.

Well, I agree frustrated. But it's almost a good thing that cops aren't any smarter. A smart cop has a license to do just about anything, including pre med murder!

A smart cop tells very convincing lies in court. A smart cop never has to worry about his wife cheating. A smart cop makes additional income on the side. A smart cop bends the law whenever he wants without getting called.

Maybe you better stop 'vaporizing', Minnow...
You might get caught by one of those smart cops.

Isn't that the same thing they told Roger Bok before they banned him from the board meetings?  Are you suggesting we start Rule 19 on here?  :D

This Is Me. THat was possibly my biggest fan and admirer Minnow  :blues: I have witnesses that place me in Eddies Bar playing on dart league at the time of that post and I did not have my laptop there.

Geo, point out any post that someone else does under your name and I am sure we can delete it. The only one in my opinion that would not recieve that consideration, is the idiot guest.

This is the second post someone has used my name the other has been eliminated.
Posted by not GEOKARJO on Jan. 06 2004,3:09 pm
my bad, I didn't realize someone was using this name already.
Posted by GEOKARJO on Jan. 06 2004,5:36 pm
By combining the first three letters of my name the first three letters of my x wife and the first two letters of my daughters name I came up with this unique user name.  :O

So GEOKARJO, is it out of bounds to respond to any single person?  chat?
I'm new to this.
I think I'll only respond to registered people, although it's tempting.

Cool 'medal' avatar GEOKARJO.

My dad got a Bronze Star during world war II for his work in modifying the Norton bomb site by adding a radio transmitter that allowed the lead bombardier to simultaneously drop all the bombs in the entire B-17 formation (all the planes) by pushing a single button.

He never was really too proud of that, though.  It might have shortened the war, but it killed alot of Germans.  He didn't like killing much.

I bet if we looked at history, there's lots of people from right here in AL that have really made a difference in the world.

Posted by minnow on Jan. 06 2004,8:57 pm
We like killing now..as long as it's a brown skinned towel head person that looks kind of like Osoma Bin Forgotten, Right Geo? Like you said, God was on our side.
