I live next to a park and it used to bother me that people would walk around with metal detectors for hours on end in a park where a stone age civilization was just 200 years ago.  I noticed they didn't seem to find much so I thought I'd help them out. I bought a couple pounds of devalued foreign currency off Amazon for $30 and about once a month I throw a handful out there's.

Today I heard a metal detector guy talking to a neighbor and he said, "Last week I found a 20 dollar coin but the dollar sign was after the 20, and it's made of brass. Not sure what it is."

OOOHHH great idea! I have a bunch of Korean Won coins left from when I was there in like 2009.  At that time the exchange rate was like 1200:1

For a while I felt guilty but a friend pointed out that it's most likely the greatest day they've ever had metal detecting. So it's a win/win

a couple of years ago. . . inexplicably wound up with some foreign coins in my pocket change. . .

one was a 70's French Franc. . . the other can't remember. .  seemed like possibly Asian. . .actually think wound up with a couple of the Frenchies

seems like at the time. . . if remember right. . . narrowed it down to maybe 3 places. .  that had been. .

one place was Walmart lol

at least one other person has told me they had a similar experience (inexplicable foreign currency in their pocket mix)

never really looked into it that much. .

well. . . guess did look up the fabriqué en France one. . .  and people were trying to sell them on EBAY for a buck or two

now this topic got me to thinkin' about it again

Perfect/Very Close Coin Matches of Different Countries (size/color/wt.)

For example, he points out that old French Franc coins (1959-2001) < https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces6.html >
[wt: 6 g/dia.: 24 mm/thickness: 1.79mm];

Barbados 25 cents (1973- 2006)
[5.67 g/23 mm/1.82 mm]
and Dominican 25 centavos (1989-91)
[5.7 g/24.25 mm/1.87]

-- all very closely match the US quarter :

[5.67 g/24.26 mm/1.75 mm] ......

The problem for the business people is that the French francs are basically worthless, the Barbadian (sp?) 'quarter' is worth about 13 US cents, and the Dominican "quarter" is worth about a half-cent.

He says over the last few years he's been flooded with these coins, plus old Belgian 5 franc coins, old Jamaican 10 cents coins, etc., all masquerading as US quarters!

It causes him headaches because his bank has to write up discrepancy reports and even return the foreign coins in some circumstances as 'proof' .... all costly extra-steps.

He went to a convention earlier this year and these coin 'masqueraders' and what the banking establishment could do about them was even the subject of two speakers.

He says at his facility, over $50,000 or so a week is 'caught', so it's not trifling amount.

they might have a whole closet FULL of Canadian money. . a dime here, a quarter there. . .

guess we don't do birthdays around here any more

but did see the Author of this Thread is listed as having a birthday today

so happy birthday dude!
