My grandparents had an apple tree break and somehow a crab apple grafted itself to it. When the tree grew back it was about 1/3 crab apple tree so it must be pretty easy to do.

It’s very interesting and could be a way to help feed more people a more varied diet

@Liberal's comment: wouldn't be surprised if the origins of grafting are 'rooted' in people seeing some sort of spontaneous grafting like that.
most of the trunk grafting have been watching seems to require a bit more boring, taping and goo.
but if you had an apple tree already that you didn't like the fruit. you can just get some sprigs from one that you know is delicious and. . .
