Just curious as to if anyone on here has or has had tires inflated with nitrogen and if you like it or not. Does it really help tread wear and gas mileage? I'm thinking about doing this so if you have an experience good or bad please post. Thanks!

It helps by keeping your tires inflated to the right pressure, less leakage because the molecules are bigger.

I've had a few sets of tires filled with nitrogen. I'd agree with what SB said above, if you're having trouble with any of your tires losing air the nitrogen might help.

No, I haven't noticed any difference in gas mileage or tread wear.
I'd recommend the nitrogen to someone who was losing a little bit of air now and then, otherwise the difference is negligible. Lately I'll only get nitrogen if they throw it in free with installation of new tires. I don't see enough benefit from it that I'd pay extra.

Have a friend who's into collector cars, he uses nitrogen to eliminate the corrosive effect of oxygen and water vapor.The air we breathe is 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen...with traces of water vapor...and trace elements of other gasses making up the remaining 1%...

Thanks everyone! I was wondering what the percentages were expat. I've heard that when filled with nitrogen it is at least 97-98% pure nitrogen.

Probably a good point about the water vapor and trying to avoid rust. On newer vehicles, like the past ten years or so, they have tire pressure monitors in each of the wheels. Last time I bought tires they tried to sell me a whole new unit, claiming that the water vapor in the tire would make it rust. If using nitrogen would cut down on that water vapor it might be worth it if it would cut down on the rust on those tire pressure monitors.

Aluminum rims come with a protective coating. Once that wears off, especially at the bead area, you have aluminum oxide, and leaks. Nitrogen greatly reduces the formation of aluminum oxide.
