Your Take? Especially in light of the Mary Cheney issue

TRANSGENDER CANDIDATE
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Robert Haaland could make history if he is elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors next Tuesday. He was born a she. Haaland would be the nation's first transgender elected official. The 40-year-old Haaland was born and raised a woman in Austin, Minnesota. He declared himself a lesbian at age 20 and began to identify as a man after college and law school. Haaland -- a Democrat --is considered a front-runner in the race to represent the city's Haight Ashbury district.

I would be amazed.  If it were me, I wouldn't vote for him just because of that fact that I think it's wrong to change your sex and that would be the only reason.  But, if he wins it, more power to em ya know.  I guess anyone can be elected into office in Cali.

Ok, I have perhaps a dumb question.  I get so confused with the trans-sex lingo.  Does transgender mean that she went through with the surgery and is officially a he?  Or as the story states she just identifies herself as a himself? ???

No amont of surgery can change your sex.  You see, the sex of a complex organism is determined by the presence of sex glands.  The outward appearance of the physical body, while determined during development in the womb by the hormonal output of the sex glands, is simply that; the physical result of the influence of the sex glands on the resulting sex organs.

You can change the outward appearance of the physical body to "portray" the opposite sex of the patient however, you can not surgically create a female from a male or a male from a female.

Those who under go "sex change" procedures quite simply no longer resemble their actual sex and become a nonfunctioning image of their perceived gender.

Oh shut up. If nobodies business but her own. What does that possibly have to do with his politics? With little minds back home, I can see why she left.

Paul you posses horrifically truncated insight.

Those who are so motivated as to change their perceived gender should be allowed the same opportunity to hold office as any other person.  However, I for one will watch their activities and progress with more than average suspicion.

Why?
Posted by Truth on Oct. 28 2004,4:16 pm
Why?  Why what?  Why you are shortsighted?

The answer to that question would require in depth study of your childhood and present self-limiting behaviors.

Why would you have to, "watch their activities and progress with more than average suspicion." ?
Posted by Truth on Oct. 29 2004,2:37 pm
Because the act of receiving a "sex change" procedure lies so far outside the limits of mainstream society that it may call into question how well they could actually represent their constituency.

That's crazy.  Though I do not understand it, it doesn't make you incapable or incompetent.  I would have issues if she had a criminal history or had a drug or alcohol problem.  These or other specific behaviors might make me concerned, but someones private sex life is no business of mine.  I do not see why it should be yours either.

Well the conversation must have hit a nerve with truth.  His wisdom on the subject might make one think of the time he was impersonating as Daisy Duke.  There was something quite sick about that when he took on the Daisy Duke persona and spoke of his flexibility as a gymnist.  I wonder what the Sheriff would think of Truth's gender identity issues?
