I get offers weekly to move, some very tempting.

Our economy is failing, Gropey’s policies will eventually kill it. Over 40 years of being in business for myself I see it coming and it’s going to be ugly.

One of the signs is seeing more and more street corner panhandling.

Senator Tina Smith:

Inflation Reduction Act: Cutting Costs for Minnesotans
I have no doubt that when I look back on my service in the Senate, I will see the Inflation Reduction Act as one of the most important pieces of legislation I had a chance to work on. It's called the Inflation Reduction Act because it will help lower costs for Americans, but this bill will do much more than that.
It lowers health insurance costs for millions of Americans and lowers drug prices by finally allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs with drug companies. It will make our tax system more fair by closing loopholes so that corporations earning more than $1 billion a year in profits pay at least 15% in taxes. And maybe most importantly, it takes dramatic action to switch us to domestic clean power.
Prescription Drugs and Health Care
For decades, Democrats fought against Big Pharma to pass legislation allowing Medicare to negotiate directly for lower prescription drug costs. Finally, we beat them.
For the first time, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, we will be able to use the full leverage of American taxpayers to get lower drug prices for millions of Americans. In addition, over 28,000 Minnesotans on Medicare who need insulin will see their costs capped at $35 per month. And for the first time, we will cap seniors' out-of-pocket cost for medicines at $2,000 a year. Finally, we will crack down on price gouging practices by pharmaceutical companies by limiting price hikes on medications.
In addition to lowering prescription drug costs, we will lower the cost of health insurance. The Inflation Reduction Act extended generous tax credits so that Minnesotans can access affordable health insurance in the individual market. These are all big milestones in the fight for lowering health care costs.
Unrigging the Tax Code
For decades, Wall Street has fought tooth and nail to stop Democrats from unrigging the tax code. Before the Inflation Reduction Act, some of the largest, most profitable corporations paid zero dollars in federal income taxes. Here’s a list of some of the occupations that paid more in federal income taxes than some of these corporations:
• Nurses
• Teachers
• Firefighters
• Truckers
• Waiters/waitresses
But with the Inflation Reduction Act, we’re making sure these wealthy, powerful corporations have skin in the game by implementing a 15% minimum tax on corporate profits that can be reinvested in America's working people. That’s progress.
Clean Power and the Climate Crisis
Some of the biggest components of the clean energy sections of the Inflation Reduction Act have been all over the news – 40% emissions reductions being the biggest – but I want to highlight some of the programs Minnesotans will be able to take advantage of to fight the climate crisis and bring down their energy costs.
For example, millions of low- and moderate-income Minnesotans wanting to install new electric appliances (like super-efficient heat pumps, water heaters, clothes dryers, stoves, and ovens) could receive rebates of 50 – 100 percent thanks to this law. Commercial building owners can receive a tax credit up to $5 per square foot to support energy efficiency improvements that deliver lower utility bills. Minnesotans can receive $4,000 - $7,500 in upfront discounts to buy an electric vehicle. These are just some of the examples of the incredible programs we’re delivering to ensure Minnesotans can lower their energy costs and invest in a cleaner future for our grandchildren.
-
There’s still so much work to be done in Congress – restoring a woman’s right to choose, expanding access to health care in rural areas and addressing the housing crisis to name a few. But with the Inflation Reduction Act we are proving that we can and will deliver for the American people on some of this nation’s most pressing issues.

So if I'm going to believe the fuel costs in your link and what you've posted so proudly about making a thousand a day you seem to going in the hole driving a truck...well you've still got that cardboard box and those canned little friskies...

^^ I run city, I use a lot less fuel, Gropey sold us out when he trashed our domestic oil production,.

I’m betting $18000 is a small fleet figure, $18000 divided by $5.50 a gal is 3272 gallons x a moderate average of 6mpg is 19636 miles, can’t do that with one truck in a week.

^^ seasonal? 40 years of driving truck and I’ve never seen an actual shortage.

Will we pay more? Yes, YOU will.

Posted by Expatriate on Nov. 03 2022,5:53 am
^^We just had a harvest season..I'm sure you never had diesel equipment on that 40 acre farm, just a couple mules I imagine. Most real farmers run diesel equipment, hence the seasonal demand.

Beau brought up the refinery shortage, why did Trump allow the sale of North America's largest refinery Port Arthur Texas Refinery to the Saudis, why are they exporting diesel when we have a shortage?
Why did the Saudis give Jared Kushner Trump's Son-in-Law 2 BILLION DOLLARS??

Posted by Self-Banished on Nov. 03 2022,6:02 am

Before Twitter and Meta Laid-off thousands of workers, non-bank lenders  and mortgage companies were already cutting cost by cutting back on employees. Is this the start of a housing crisis or something else?

< View on YouTube >

Posted by Glad I Left on Nov. 17 2022,8:35 am
My girl is in process of selling her place in Bloomington and I asked her realtor the same thing a few weeks back. He's been in the game a long time. He doesn't think it's a housing crisis like the Mid 2000s.  Houses are just taking longer to sell cuz of all the rate hikes.  When you get an offer it's most likely best and final.  There isn't a bidding war like there was in the spring.  Buyers just aren't negotiating.
I'm not in the field so I'm kinda taking his word for it. I didn't feel like I was getting sold a bill of goods.  And I'm extremely skeptical of all sales people since basically they are paid to lie. (not really, but you know what I mean)
I think this is the start of something more drastic, way beyond housing and the tech market.

Posted by Expatriate on Nov. 17 2022,11:50 am
^^Kind of thought the mortgage rates would put the kabash on housing but the house behind me just sold for big bucks.

Met the new owners, they tried to negotiate but the Bank would only drop a thousand dollars.
The Bank had put a lot of money in the house, new roof, new carpets and flooring, refinished woodwork, new counter tops, redid the baths..

The house was owned by a truck driver/owner operator, he died young (65ish) a couple years ago, his kids just let the house go into foreclosure. The Trucker was a nice guy, he'd live there for a longtime, so much for truckers making big money!

Notice how the Republicans voted on the railroad sick leave, they would have sooner disrupted the economy than give workers any paid sick leave....

lawmakers passed a separate measure that would give rail workers seven days of paid sick leave per year, addressing a chief concern unions and progressives had with the agreement.

The U.S. economy is taking a breath of relief as inflation cools, jobs and wages increase and unemployment stays low. Republicans continuously attack the Biden administration’s economic agenda, but For Facts Sake: “Bidenomics” is working – and it’s working especially well in states with predominantly Republican populations. @ GIL.. Trump inherited Obama's good economy and proceeded to do what a failed businessman does best head toward bankruptcy.

Trump's infrastructure plan was to sell off our highway system and turn it in to a toll road system..ever been to Mexico there's a tollbooth every 10 miles and the roads are crap! I posted the link in the past.

Trump's Tax break for the average American was a joke. For me it was 1% break in the first year and downhill from that point! For Corporations and Billionaires it was big bucks, and failed trickle-down theory for US.
When you figure in your share of the National Debt Trump ran up with no return it's a huge negative for the Country.

Trump's trade war bull that China was going to pay the Tax was just like his wall that Mexico was going to pay for Bullshit...

Had Trump put as much effort and time in to running the Country as he put into golfing and tweeting we may have seen some positive results.

Yellow: Inside American Trucking’s Largest Bankruptcy | WSJ What Went Wrong

Yellow is one of the oldest and biggest trucking companies in the U.S., but it collapsed in late July after years of ballooning debt and a standoff with the Teamsters union. The freight carrier company filed for bankruptcy after 99 years in business. But what events led to the freight company’s downfall?

WSJ explains the factors that helped drive the 99-year-old trucking giant’s growth and details the factors that have led Yellow to face bankruptcy.

I'm not for total deregulation, but I am for smart regulation, I don't think unfettered deregulation is good. But do I trust the gov't to run anything efficiently? fuck no.
Saw a pretty good 15 min YouTube video about why we no longer have small trucks (like the 80s Ranger/S10) any more. Stupid CAFE standards introduced in 2008 to force gas mileage regulations on the industry.  All based on foot print (wheel base x track) and the smaller the footprint the more stringent the MPG requirements are. To the point that a truck like the 80s ranger/S10 would have to achieve basically impossible results.
Manufacturers could still make them without meeting these but the fines per vehicle were obscene.
The end result is just make the trucks bigger. That's why the new rangers are the size of 1980s F150s.
You see these same manufacturers making smaller trucks for foreign markets left and right, but here in the good ole USA we are stuck with a stupid gov't making stupid decisions like this.

If Auto Company CEOs Are Raking It in, Why Shouldn't Their Workers?
Ford, GM, and Stellantis, otherwise known as The Big Three auto manufacturers, have reported a combined $250 billion in profits over the last decade. Not to mention that CEO pay for these companies has spiked by 40% over the past four years.
As the UAW negotiates a new contract, it is raising a fundamental question that all workers should be asking. If bosses are raking it in, shouldn't employees be, too?

Who will win on the economy? And why?
Today is the South Carolina primary, but rather than spend much time on it — Trump will get his party’s nomination — Heather and I  consider the remarkably good set of economic reports that emerged this past week and what, if anything, they mean for Biden’s bid for re-election — and why more than 70 percent of Republicans say the economy is terrible.

We also look at the U.S. military’s attacks on Iranian forces and the militias Iran is backing, in Iraq and Syria, in response to Iran’s drone attack last Sunday that killed three American soldiers and injured at least 40 others. Is this the start of a regional war?

Along the way we look at the new Child Tax Credit bill, and why so many progressives are against it. And why the border security bill emerging from the Senate, as well as additional funding for Ukraine, are unlikely to pass (the answer is spelled TRUMP).

Finally, we examine whether the Delaware chancery court is correct — that there is such a thing as excessive executive compensation — and why Elon Musk is living proof.

MAGA Senator Takes “Slap in the Face” After Biden Correction

One day prior to President Biden’s State of the Union address, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote on X: “Welcome 2Pres Biden’s America where the fed govt chooses energy dependence over energy DOMINANCE AND INDEPENDENCE.”

The Elon Musk-owned social media platform’s fact-checking tool, Community Notes, added context to Grassley’s post: “Contrary to the Senator’s claim, oil production is at an all time high in the US, hitting a record 13.319 million barrels per day in November 2023. For comparison the average daily production in 2017 was 9.35 million bpd while the average in 2023 was 12.93 million bpd

Patrick De Hann (a.k.a. The Gas Price Guy, host of the Over a Barrel podcast) also replied to Grassley’s claim: “‘President Biden’s America’… where net imports continue to drop and domestic oil production has reached a record 13.3 million barrels per day.” De Hann added, “You couldn’t have slapped yourself in the face harder, Senator.”

The Trump Depression

The Trump Depression in 2020 resulted from the long run trends in U.S. capitalism toward enormous inequality and resulting lack of consumer demand. Trump added incredible mistakes toward the coronavirus in order to help his political popularity. The resulting depression had the sharpest and deepest trough of any in U.S. history in such a short time.

IBEW Welcomes Historic Federal Investment Into Power Grid

This week, the Biden-Harris administration announced nearly $3.5 billion in funds for the largest investment in America’s electrical infrastructure ever. This money will go to 58 projects in 44 states, strengthening and modernizing the electric grid.

“We’re pleased the Department of Energy has announced funding for these critical projects to strengthen our power grid, funded by President Biden’s historic infrastructure law,” said IBEW International President Kenneth W. Cooper. “IBEW members are already on the front lines powering and maintaining our nation’s energy infrastructure, and we have partnered with the Biden administration from its earliest days to ensure the jobs rebuilding and reinforcing the grid are the sort of middle class, family-sustaining jobs that President Biden speaks about all the time.”

The administration reiterated its support for union jobs, with three out of four projects already committed to using IBEW members in their construction and many more still in the planning process. Many of those are expected to use an IBEW workforce as well.

Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, these jobs range from enhancing grid resilience to withstand increasingly severe weather events to connecting customers with renewable power generated in isolated, rural areas.

This week’s announcement is just the first round of spending under the Energy Department’s Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnership, which will invest more than $10 billion into modernizing the nation’s power grid.

“The men and women of the IBEW are ready to get to work, and this announcement is a great step forward,” said Cooper.

Billions are being drained from America’s economy every single week. And it will only get worse all because of the scariest two words in the English language… private equity!!! borne out of Reagan era deregulation, lowering of capital gains taxes, and lobbying — facilitated by five Republicans on the Supreme Court legalizing billionaires buying legislation from members of Congress — that even created an entirely new income tax loophole called “carried interest” just for private equity managers.

Sound familiar, remember the hostile takeover of Wilson Foods that killed Albert Lea....
