ST. PAUL — Republican congressional candidate Mike Parry took heat Tuesday for portraying Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton as a pill popper, with lawmakers calling for an apology and Dayton’s spokesman describing the comments as “vile personal attacks.”

Parry, a state senator running in the contentious 1st District GOP primary, made the comment Monday at a Brown County Republican fundraiser.

A video of Parry’s speech posted online by a New Ulm Journal reporter shows Parry saying of Dayton: “When you sit across from him and you watch him pop 15 to 16 pills when you’re having a meeting, it’s scary.” Parry emphasized the importance of keeping Republican control of the Legislature.

Dayton spokesman Bob Heume lashed back at Parry on Tuesday.

“This is the final gasp from a candidate who has nothing to offer the people in the 1st congressional district,” Hume said in a statement. “The Governor will not stoop to comment on Parry’s vile personal attacks.”

Allen Quist, a former state representative running against Rep. Tim Walz (D-MN) in Minnesota's 1st congressional district, told a town hall late last week that Obama's recent immigration policy, as well as his decision not to defend in court the Defense of Marriage Act, were both unconstitutional. While some Republicans would cautiously leave the matter there, Quist pressed on, declaring that Obama had committed an impeachable offense. If elected, he promised he would "not only propose it, [he] would argue it to the utmost of my ability and [he] would carry it like a banner to the American public."

So which Republican do you kooks plan to vote for in your primary?

Being retired military I voted for waltz thinking he would take care of retired vets. He did, But the rest of his stuff  followed DEM. party lines!! I want someone that will vote for the will of MN. people. Not party lines

Hey, if I were Dayton I'd be depressed too.

Maybe the pills help him deal with the farm animal thing.

Should we now call him Governor Zoloft???

Surprisingly, Walz is not as strict a party-line voter as is John Kline on the Repub. side, or Al Franken on the DFL side.  Walz and Colin Peterson were the outliers (Walz not by much at 88%), versus nearly 100% for Franken and Kline.

Check out this article from MinnPost earlier this week.

I'm sure he'd rather Nancy Pelosi was still Speaker though.

One good thing about Dayton taking his pills, it shows that he knows he has a problem. He is willing to take steps to help the problem. Now on the other hand you have the GOP.

Perhaps Dayton is psyhcotic enough that he longs for despotism much like Obumbum.

He has depression, why add another illness?

^ Could be miss-diagnosed, could be bi-polar, could be alot of things, could be self-medicated.

do we really want someone with that impairment making important decisions???

is it physical or is it more mental???

maybe that job is more stress than he can handle.

The "pill-popping" thing was a cheap-shot.  Anyone familiar with the newer classes of anti-depressants knows you're not "popping pills" through the day, it's one pill daily.  Dayton could easily be taking a rolaids or vitamins in the middle of the day, or like most people I know his age take something for cholesterol, high-blood pressure, etc.

After lunch I often take a couple vitamins and fish oil, I guess if I was having a meeting with Parry I'd have to excuse myself or he'd brand me as a mentally unfit pill-popper.   :dunce:

Depression is not being psychotic, nor is it comparable to schizophrenia.   :dunce:

Riigghht...  I'd recommend the DSM-IV for a summary of all those things.  Check it out and let me know how easy it is to confuse someone as being psychotic or schizophrenic versus depressed.

You're free to consider any issue you like at the ballot box.  And Dayton's been pretty upfront about it.  But this isn't about mental capacity or impairment, because it's not exactly like republicans are known for their mental capacity.  :D

Sarah Palin was clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed, and Reagan spent much of his second term being so out of it mentally he didn't know what was going on much of the time.  Important decisions in the administration were literally being made by Nancy's fortune-teller, and the conservatives still idolize them.

Or maybe Dayton understands that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and is able to turn both to his advantage.  I seem to recall seeing that somewhere.

Well then, I guess that clears all that up :D

So that just leaves the farm animal thing then.

Posted by grassman on Aug. 12 2012,8:56 am
Oh come on get off it SB. Like you haven't gazed adoringly at those farm animals along the highway on your journeys as a truck driver. Still got those high boots?

Seriously?
YOU need to read the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual!!
A depression DX (diagnoses) is ambiguous.
Depression/ Major Depression frequently co-occurs with other psychiatric problems!  Depressed people may have symptoms of psychosis including delusions and hallucinations!!  Certain types of long-term drug use can both cause and worsen depressive sypmtoms.  There are increased rates of drug and alcohol abuse and dependence.  Depression is associated with many impairments including distorted information processing; cognitive impairments; impaired memory; psychotic episodes; disorientation; memory loss...and this does not even cover the physical impairments associated with depression!!  The effectiveness of anti-psychotic drugs is questionable.  So yea...depression IS a psychotic disorder and IS in the same class as schizophrenia!!
The guy had mental issues when you voted for him...and you chose to not let his mental incapacity be an issue...
PLUS...people do not pop blood pressure, cholesterol, or vitamin pills during meetings!  Especially a govenor who would be advised as to the proper time to take such meds. by his medical team.  Wouldnt suprise me if they were rolaids though as gastro. issues are a problem associated with depression.
The guy has had issues for years...its not something that just goes away because you voted for him.
Parry was right to question why he pops pills!!

Posted by hairhertz on Aug. 15 2012,2:32 pm
So you'd back depression as a reason for disability benefits?

My God, Santeria is an idiot.  :dunce:

People with depression can obviously have other mental problems, that doesn't mean everyone with depression has other mental problems.

ah...typically they do! unless one is simply suffering from the blues, by which then medication would be only temporary

Really, do you have solid evidence that in the history of prescription, OTC, and vitamin/mineral usage no one has ever taken any of those during a meeting?  :p

Interesting.  You may also be aware that depression COULD co-occur with halitosis, osteoarthritis, otitits externa (swimmer's ear), ring worm, and possibly a bad hang nail.  But I thought we were talking about what it actually is, not what could've or might be taking place in addition.

Never said it went away, but I looked over the platform of Horner, Dayton, and Emmer.  I watched the debates and looked over the campaign websites and I picked the candidate I thought was best.

Parry has a right to question or be concerned about anything.  And I have a right to question or make a comment to this topic about it.  I never said it shouldn't be an issue to anyone, you're free to consider whatever issues you want.

No, it's classified as a mood disorder.  My book on general psychology says so as do most other legitimate sources.  And according to < Mayo Clinic > the addition of psychosis is uncommon.  And mood disorders aren't in the same class as schizophrenia.
