I think it's time for the " Prepare to stop " warning flashing lights to be installed on this road. About 6 years ago a young lady was killed by a semi that couldn't stop in time for a red light.

Delcie Lee Brandt of Albert Lea was extricated from a black Volkswagen Beetle and transported by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.

Hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Levisen said Brandt was treated and released to another hospital.

A St. Marys Hospital spokeswoman said Brandt was listed in serious condition Wednesday morning.

Albert Lea Police Lt. J.D. Carlson said Brandt was conscious when emergency personnel arrived at the scene; however, she reportedly suffered from a head injury.

According to police, the semi, driven by Gary Leroy Sordahl, 42, was traveling southbound on Minnesota Highway 13 just before 1:30 p.m. when it collided with the Volkswagen. It is unclear which direction the Volkswagen was traveling.

The semi driver pulled off to the side of U.S. Highway 69 near the United Methodist Church after the crash and could be seen talking to an officer as emergency responders treated Brandt.

A report later in the day stated Sordahl was not feeling well.

Well you know the local government hero's must have more important issues to deal with than unsafe traffic lights.

At least judging by how many of them there are--and how long they have been that way.

As a truckdriver, prepare to stop lights are a wonderful thing.

I dont' get it.  It couldn't possibly be a more visable intersection.

Maybe they should put in rumble strips to alert inattentive drivers?  :dunno:  :D

instead of going from 55 to 40, take it down to 30

Always been an accident prone intersection for as long as I can remember.

Do you think the fact that you can avoid the stoplights altogether might have something to do with it?

Semi-trucks that are fully loaded have a harder time stopping. Unless it's just a driver error and they blow the red light or try to beat out a yellow light.

Maybe they need to make the yellow light last longer. In bigger cities the change from yellow to red seems like the yellow is on alot longer for safety reasons.

The "flashing prepare to stop" light is a great idea!    I had contacted my City Council representative a couple of years ago, thinking a left turn arrow would be a big help in preventing accidents.   The left turn lane is already there, all it would take is the left turn arrow light.  I was told that it is not a City issue, it is a County road, and she would pass the suggestion along to the County.

That probably would not have helped Delcie, but there are too many accidents at that intersection to keep ignoring the issue, no matter whose responsibility it is.

If not a warning light, just a reduction of speed through there would probably help. I don't know what it is now but if the speed were reduced to say 30mph it would most likely reduce accidents. A sign is probably cheap compared to a light.

Texting, talking on the phone, dialing the radio, smoking drinking pop, or coffee, even reading a book, which I saw recently on 35W in twin cities traffic! Good grief for poor drivers and we think we need less police? I just hate to drive in traffic because of all these nuts out there, legally driving?..... :frusty: ....ned
