Sounds like we are getting a kfc going into the old starbucks building. that is good new.
Posted by Paul Harvey on Aug. 17 2009,2:37 pm
Is Ron Kraus going to run it from FL. Man, I put a lot of money in that guys pocket over the years with all his high dollar convenience stores and what not. True, it was my choice.
Posted by bulldog on Aug. 17 2009,2:47 pm
not sure who bought it but id rather eat at kfc before mc donalds anytime. not a very big place though
Posted by Paul Harvey on Aug. 17 2009,3:19 pm
Ya, I only do subway when I eat out. Everything else, including KFC is too unhealthy.
Posted by jazzy jeff on Aug. 17 2009,11:03 pm
How do you know that KFC is moving in???  I heard that Culvers was coming to town but it dont look like they is here.  Jazzy
Posted by jazzy jeff on Aug. 17 2009,11:05 pm
Don't get me wrong, I love KFC and would gladly eat some good ole fried chicken anyday!!
Posted by This is my real name on Aug. 18 2009,5:28 am
I heard Long John Silver's was going into the old A&W location. Oh wait, that was decades ago. I thought KFC was going to go out near Wal-Mart, if and when they came. I hadn't heard anything about Culvers. I do remember hearing Maid Rite was going into the old Starbucks location. What ever happened to that?

I am guessing most of this is just talk. I'll believe something is going in there when I see the building has sold and see a news story about what's coming.

Posted by Whiskero on Aug. 18 2009,7:52 am
If it's true, I hope it will be run better than the last bunch.
Posted by ControlledHyperness on Aug. 18 2009,10:11 am
I have an idea!!! Now, this MIGHT be a suprise to some, but there is aready a KFC building in town...why not use that??? Just a guess here, but I am sure that KFC could go into the old KFC building???? :sarcasm:  :p
Posted by GEOKARJO on Aug. 18 2009,10:31 am
The old KFC building is out dated the original franchise  owner lost thier franchise due to the fact KFC wanted them to update and they could not afford to.

Posted by bulldog on Aug. 18 2009,11:21 am
yes KFC wants the franchise to be closer to the interstate for one thing, Is it just rumor. well i have the plans for a remodel  in my hands now so i dont think it is rumor.

I typed in Albert Lea gets KFC on Google and this came up - loopnet - KFC Restaurant, Restaurant 2221 East Main Street.   Clicked onto it and it tells about what's being planned for the property.

I contacted YUM Brands about three years ago to see if they planned on rebuilding in town.  They said a KFC/Long John Silver's was being planned for out near Arby's.  Funny how they built one of these in Austin instead.  Both cities were supposed to get them.
Would be cool to see an A&W/LJS combination.

Sonic would be awesome too.  I'm surprised Culver's hasn't come in already either.

You people must have a boring life to get involved in a discussion about this.

^Ever listen in on old cell phone conversations. I did about 15 years ago. It's absolutely incredible how boring 99% of the people are. I had no idea.

People that still live here have little lives generally or they'd have moved away many moons ago Grasshopper. Believe me, I've been an observer for 19 years now.

Talk about people having boring little lifeless lives.....

I agree that a Sonic would be AWESOME...even a Chik-Fil-A would be nice. A Noodles could go into the old Starbucks, as those restaurants are usually in small places. Then again, I tend to be more about the value menus, and so far the only people who have worthwhile menus are Taco Bell and BK for breakfast. Oh well  :D

Posted by Whiskero on Aug. 19 2009,8:29 am
Geo, There had to be more to the other people and the KFC.  When they filed for bankruptcy, it was well over 425,000.  Something isn't quite right with that picture.
Posted by dipsie1 on Dec. 23 2009,9:40 am
I see they are finally working on the Starbucks building.  When is it supposed to be open?????? :D
Posted by Whiskero on Dec. 23 2009,11:51 am
They were first shooting for end of year, but now they are hoping for February.
Posted by Whiskero on Feb. 06 2010,10:08 am
We drive by the new KFC building every night.  The last few nights there have been people in there, maybe being trained.
They did a beautiful job in sprucing the building up-it blends in with the colors of Taco John's.  They even have the matching red lights around the outline of the roof.  Very inviting.

Does anyone remember the original owner way back named Kent Vanguilder? His wife name was Sally and they had two daughters.

Kent was a great guy and owner. I think they moved south to live out there retirement.    :D

My sister use to come home smelling like KFC with a Bucket of leftover chicken. She liked Kent as a boss. I liked the leftover chicken. That was in the early 70's.. Damn I'm getting old.
HH, I know how you feel..

I could be mistaken, but wasn't Kent also an accomplished body builder?
Posted by Whistle Blower 2010 on Feb. 10 2010,1:12 am
Yes , he pumped iron at the local Y for many years. He was in very good shape even in his 60's.

Down with Corporate Food!

KFC/Pizza Hut/Taco Bell is crap, it's bad for you, and money spent there doesn't stay in the local economy.

Buy local!

Only had fast food once this year, only because my wife is pregnant and had a craving, and you know how that goes.

I will have to pick up a bucket of chicken though, it has been 5+ years since I have had it. Should be good for 5+ more years.

I will however continue buying from Subway, although I have not had any this year either.

Botto when it comes to food products very little produce is grown here locally, we keep our dollars in town through patronizing local businesses that hires and provides jobs for our neighbors.

I have tried the grilled, will never again. I know what grilled chicken should be, their's is not it. :)
Posted by hymiebravo on Feb. 14 2010,7:36 pm
Do you mean it wasn't tough and dry? lol

1. It could have been that particular franchise screwed it up.

2. Maybe they are making it extra good here, because they are new.

I know that Dominoes Pizza did that when they came to Austin. The first few weeks the pizzas had ample toppings, and they where pretty decent. Then After the honeymoon period; they proceeded to offer up vastly different inferior pizzas. IMO

Getting back to the chicken.

I had never tried the grilled before. I tried it from this new place in Albert Lea. I was pretty amazed, actually. It had that grill flavor which was really good. Plus it was very moist and tender.

I kept looking at it and eating it and was pretty pleasantly surprised. "How did do this?" kept going through my mind. lol

If they keep doing it that way they should be pretty busy and successful. I would think so anyway.

The drive through on Saturday was backed up to the front door causing serious delays for people parked in the parking lot, when we finally got up to the intercom to place our order we were informed that there would be a three minute wait for our order and was asked would that be alright. Looking ahead to the 5 cars ahead of us I said  the three minute wait would be acceptable. It was 12 minutes before we reached the window to pay for and receive our order.
Posted by Whiskero on Feb. 15 2010,4:11 pm
You are going to have a wait at any place that just opens.
Give it a month or so, then go.

Posted by Pigpen on Feb. 17 2010,11:37 am
Yes it takes time to get the people trained and to get into a groove so that your food will come out fast.  I have see how this town has treated new places that opened up, and how they want their food now! So give them time and only go if you have a little bit to wait. If you don't have the time then go somewhere else and go back in a month when they are faster.
Posted by hairhertz on Feb. 17 2010,12:48 pm
Sound advice, PP.  You have to be patient & tolerant when a new place opens.
Posted by grassman on Feb. 18 2010,12:11 pm
Grilled chicken is best at home. Sit on deck, have a cold one and watch the birds.

Went to KFC for the 1st time today.  What a let down.  The chicken had no taste!!!!  Think cardboard would have been better.  No thanks.  Can't say much for the menue as well.  Takes 10 min. to figure it out
Posted by Pretzel Logic on Feb. 19 2010,7:08 pm
I think it is tough to beat the fried chicken at nelsons when it is hot and fresh. I have tried the broasted chicken out at the truck stop also.  Not  impressed. It is like the KIA of fried chicken.

Seriously? KFC is THAT big of a deal for that many morons?

They probably worked up the appetite pushing the cart around Walmart.

Cooking must truly be a lost art to most people, and patience a lost virtue.

Get a whole fryer, cut it up, roll the pieces in some flour, and throw it in some hot Crisco.

Posted by Blackdog on Feb. 19 2010,9:46 pm
Huh.

Kfc?
Life must be at a complete standstill, like boredom if we talk about a fast food restaurant.C,mon people lets get on with something better or we dont belong in this town

There is no + talk here. Its all a bunch of negativity or i should say republican talk.

Liberal how you doing? Need some therapy?

I was there earlier today too...and I have to say the chicken was really good. Had great taste, as did the other food. The menu was very easy to follow..so easy in fact that my three year old was able to identify what sides he wanted  :p
I do have to say the service was pretty good too. Hopefully the people that were working the lunch rush today will still be as helpful and kind in three months as they were today :D

Never too excited about fast phood, myself.

However, I tried out a new Mongolian grill today. The service was pretty bad- no menu- just "you want soup? You want rice? What to drink?" I brought my ingredient bowl to the grill and it was awesome! About $10 which isn't too bad. Brocolli, crab, beef, rammen, tofu...excellent!

I would just encourage people to step out of pocket and comfort zone- that's where the good stuff is. I've had mongolean at the chains, but this was off the hook.

Cripes, then again, a well-prepared plate of Hamburger Helper beats most fast-food experiences in both taste and pleasure.

I just made a killer vegetable beef soup using left over prime rib from last night. It was a 16 pounder a friend brought out. It wouldn't fit in my roaster so we cut off about 6" and I am cutting it into 4 steaks for another night.

Surf and turf for us tonight. Shrimp on the grill with olive oil and Johnny's seasoning. Petite sirloin steaks and caesar salad.

I haven't found a restaurant that can keep it so simple and so good.

KFC,

I drive by and see alot of cars.

Posted by Robert Hoffman on Feb. 21 2010,1:32 am
"ALBERT LEA INVESTMENTS, LLP" hopes you see a lot of cars! They paid $630,000 for the place (before renovation maybe-i'm not sure) in Nov 2009.

"STEWART AND HOLT, LLC" only paid $515,000 in Sept 2009 so the difference between the 630k in Nov and the 515k in Sept might be for the renovation. (I'm just not sure right now)

BUT "CHEW ALBERT LEA LLC" paid $960,000 to "MAGCO LLC" for it when it was opend as the Starbucks.

...this is all just for fun but the moral of the story goes; KFC bought the Starbuck building for $630k in 2009 when Starbucks paid $960k for it in 2005.

YES, the Albert Lea market IS that bad.

*ALL of this information is from the county web site. (except the 'bad' part; thats just my opinion-but it'll get a lil better in 2014.)

I ate there once last year.  Both me and the friend I went with got really ill that night.  Trouble with grills like that is often the food safety isn't real good with the handling of raw meat.

I consider myself a big(er) guy, (6'1, 210 lbs)(not huge)(tiny in NFL terms)(huge in Nasty habit terms :D )but whenever I go into these (buffet) places, there are guys (and gals) that have got to be pushing 400 lbs easy...(note: I am comparing them to my defensive linemen, so I think I'm a good judge of size)

..now I never see this kind of size at the local "authentic hispanic joint"...why is that? :dunno:
