QUOTE
Authorities say it happens like clockwork.
Gas prices jump past three dollars a gallon, and the number of people fueling and driving off without paying jumps. "We're probably averaging 4 or 5 reports a day out of our patrol division, said Ramsey County Sheriff's Sergeant Eric Bradt, "and it's only gonna get worse".  < KARE11 >
It's not just the farmer's barrels and "gas n go" anymore.

A few months back thay caught a guy with a van that had a system set up in the back of it. He would park on top of the underground tank filler hole, pop the lid off and siphon from underground tanks thru floor of the van. Was selling it for 2 bucks a gallon.

In New Jersey it is illegal for you to pump gas into your car.  They use attendants.

In Virginia EVERY pump is pre-pay.  You don't pay, you don't pump.

I saw on the news last night where an owner said he didn't want to make all his pumps pre-pay because it would drive some of his customers off to the competition and oh, by the way, we don't make money on gas anyhow.

Eventually, all pumps will become prepay, if not at $3.00 a gallon, maybe at $3.50 or $4, but eventually, like Virginia, you will have to pay BEFORE filling.

I don't have a problem with it.  Less drive offs should mean less loss to the owner meaning they won't have to pass those losses to the paying customers.

I don't agree with the law that states if a car drives off without paying the car owner is automatically responsible, even if they weren't in the car.  If they go to the car owner and the car owner provides information of who the car was loaned to, THAT should be the responsible party.

Myself, I have never been keen on loaning my car (nobody takes care of something the way you take care of your own things) so it would be a non-issue with me, just doesn't seem right, though.
