I was listening to the scanner for the last couple minutes and there has been one accident after another out on the interstate.

Interstate is closed from Owatonna to Albert Lea

It should be closed South and East of here. This has got to be costing a fortune, not to mention the risk to the law enforcement, ambulance drivers, and towing companies that are working out there.

It seems like most of the rollovers are SUV's

Sounds like the hotels are full and they're looking to get in contact with the armory, but they can't get in contact with the Homeland Security director because they don't have his phone number.

I tired to follow the scanner link but it does not seem to work for me.  I have a mac, is that the problem?

ST. PAUL (AP) Governor Pawlenty authorized the Minnesota National guard to open and staff the Guard armory in Albert Lea Sunday night to help stranded travelers.

Travel conditions are difficult throughout much of Minnesota due to heavy snow and high winds most of the day.

I just got home from about 60 miles West on 90.  It wasn't bad until about the last 10 or 15 miles closer to Albert Lea.  There were quite a few cars in the ditch.  I had a state patrol car in front and behind me trying to find a way to cross the interstate to one of the accidents.

My brother left Burnsville around 4:00 and  got home at 6:30 in C. Grove.  He said it wasn't that bad.  His wife, on the other hand, said it was a bit hairy.

Some people just can't get their heads around "NO TRAVEL ADVISED," I guess.  :p

Was back home for a Christmas party Friday night left early Saturday morning driving my rear wheel drive pickup..You feel the back end break loose and adjust speed accordingly on these rear wheel vehicles, something you don't notice as rapidly on front or four wheel autos and trucks, giving the driver more confidence to drive faster often suffering the consequences...

They had to pick up their son at the airport at 3:00.

One reason you see so many SUVs in the ditch is because people often mistakenly assume that since they have all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive they can drive like normal during anything.  I have an SUV and my philosophy is that the all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive is for after I go in the ditch.  Since I want to avoid that,  I drive with care and try to anticipate bad spots in the road.  I would rather go slow and steady to win the race than end up in the ditch and possibly never get where I had planned.

You're 100% right about the SUV false sense of invincibility factor.  I'd also add that there are increased numbers of new citizens and "visitors" to our state that are.... shall I say inexperienced in winter driving.

When I went to WSU, the first snowfall of the season was pure hilarity. Saudi fender benders everywhere.
