Once again, the tax and spend troop are at it again with that frellin' 1/2% sales tax.  All they are doing is driving more people out and spend their money else-where.  To tax a populace that is already hitting hard times in an economical down turn, is just plain frellin' stupid.

Instead of driving up tax base, why not combine some services with others, end a majority of Socialist programs.

People are already feeling the strain, with reduced hours, layoffs, or just plain dislocated from a job, they are spending less, and if a new tax is brought to light, it will just ending up that no money will be spent as they tighten thier belts, and may end up poaching for food....

They way it is now, a majority of my stuff is bought online, and the bonus of no taxes is just that much more appealing...

A taxed populus, is an enslaved one.....

I read recently in the local rag that the 1/2 percent sales tax will raise upwards of $1.5 million per year for the new watershed district. If this new tax passes, will the watershed district also levy another $250,000.00 through their taxing authority?

So if I read the article right, the county board doesn't know how much money they'll need, so they are going to tax for the fullest amount???  They claim they will lower the 9.9% tax hike as budgets are finalized.  Yeah, right.  They know how much they can get, and they're going to take to whole pie.

It looks like their latest plan is to tax all of the malcontents out of the county, so the only ones left are the ones who agree with the unconscionable tax rate    .

Anyone remember our county board of 10 years ago?  They actually took pride in not raising taxes for several years.

If you look real close at the people that are behind these issues of taxing the county, you will noticed that a majority of them are well off enough so that the tax doesn't hurt them too much and that is the only class of people that they care about, themselves. I would not doubt that, if they could, they would run everybody that isn't like them and doesn't agree with them right out of the county so they could continue their orgy of taxation.

Now, as you read that post above, who's name came to your mind?

Adam -- I don't think the previous 10 years has completly helped us today.  Look at Mower County sitting on a big bank account as they go into a building project or possibly two building projects.  Also, the same money 10 years ago does not go as far is it does today.  Belshan is right -- the budget crisis is what is important NOW so decide what is important to you and what you expect those county levy dollars to provide and let your commiss know.  Some things they cant control, those are unfunded mandates and you need to get repdan back online regarding those issues.

The issue isn't about delaying the courthouse project, but rather the footloose manner in which the board wants to pay for things.  Over the past 10 years, the county board has shifted their priorities from avoiding levy increases to seeing how much they can increase it by.  Sooner or later, yeah, they would have had to increase levy spending.  But it seems that today's board uses that as their first option.  They are far too reckless with their spending.  They nitpick about saving a few bucks over publishing the board minutes in the trib, but give no thought to the excess spending of thousands for the county attorney's salary or millions on the courthouse.

agreed on the nit pickin'  adam but levy limits should have kept the pace is all I'm saying.  Heck look at how govt has grown in number of people only, then factor in inflation, etc.  Priorities need to be reestablished.

Ole1 - help me out, it's Monday and I'm a little slow (no Jim, I'm not claiming special -- just slow  :D )  who's name is supposed to come to mind?

(PS Not a fan of the little green guy and his sign language)

You know, the last time they tried for this BS 1/2% tax, a bunch of us contacted the state capitol, and ask for information on who would be hearing the freeborn cty. tax proposal.  And then contacted them via email, or phone.

Voicing your oppinion has got to weigh with them in their descisions..

Just a thought.......

Maybe doing the study now is their way of killing this before it even gets to that level.  Otherwise they would have waited for "the plan"? ???

this study is really great--- why it is only going to cost us 22 big ones, just give me 10 grand and I will tell you the answer- WE CAN'T AFFORD IT!!!!!

Get the feeling Goverment Officials purchase college term paper and called it paying for a study.

There should be a rule. If you have to ask, you can't tax!  :)
Posted by Ole1kanobe on Aug. 28 2003,1:45 pm
how much money could the county and city have saved if they didn't do these studies on things they already know the answers to?
just wondering

Good question Ole1. I agree with you that they already know what the answer to this question will be. I think somehow they think that some miracle or the manipulation of the study will give them the answers they want. But thats the point, they know the people dont want this, but a few, who have had their way in the past, think they know better than us what we really want. I wont mention any names(TONY TROW).  :D  If this vote werent required by law, you can bet your ass that we wouldnt have one. Trow and company have never been on the popular, or majority side of any issue I can think of. People like this a dangerous, and you shouldnt even give them the time of day. They believe that the public couldnt possibly understand what is in their best interest. I believe that the public is a lot smarter than people like Trow give them credit for.
