Whats with all the debate?  Its not even a sport.  Just a bunch of girls clapping and flirting.

If its not a sport, then why is it considered one by the school? Obviously you are thinking of the way cheerleading used to be. Now, I'd like to see you hold a girl up all by yourself and be able to throw her up 25 feet. It's pretty hard to do. But we can do it, so ya I'm convinced it's a sport. Tryout and see just how hard it truely is.

maybe its not a sport - but its not flirting and clapping ... but NO one deserves to be treated that way

OK, maybe its not like it used to be 25 years ago.  But I dont see cheerleaders in the weight room or having practice everyday like other sports.  And, I sure cant see your throwing another cheerleader up in the air 25 feet.

is that cuz your not in the weight room? cuz im pretty sure that when i was in it, we WERE in the weight room.

(maybe you should  try throwing up people your same size and height.)

This whole donna debate is enough to make me want to throw up.

hey "guest"... were you drinking heavily with donna that night,  Or did you get a concussion when your head hit the dashboard(after plowing into a parked car and a house).  There are several reasons you could be experiencing an upset stomach, you should get that checked out!  And if you are such good buddies with drama queen Donna Marty, maybe you should check your head while your there!   :0

it is a sport. they do practice a lot. they are in the wait room. they work to raise school spirit and do just as much as any other team. discussion ended

Sure it's a sport! But so is clubbing, getting drunk and trying to get da hook up....dat's a sport too...

I think cheerleaders are being sexually exploited and I like it.
Posted by Who Really Cares on Feb. 06 2004,4:38 pm
Cheerleading is a sport to those who cheer...If your in the stands at a game, cheerleading is just an annoying thing that some girls like to do..

sideline isnt a sport but comp. is. comps a lotta work!
Posted by rosebudinal on Feb. 06 2004,4:53 pm
PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. LESSON ONE;      COMPETITIVE  CHEERLEADING HAS BRANCHED OFF SIDELINE. IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A SPORT THEREFORE NOT SCHOOL SPONSERED, ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT. SIDELINE IS A SCHOOL SPORT AND IS THEREFORE SPONSERED BY THE SCHOOL. BELIEVE ME I KNOW, I PAID THE ATHLETIC FEE. ALSO, SIDELINE CAN LETTER AND COMP CANNOT.

^Wasn't da minner^

I'm not saying I don't agree though....LOL

Get off it...there's nothing wrong at with being sexually provocative while cheering. Why do you feel you must deny or hide that? It's just silly. Madonna cheered with no underpants over 25 years ago for Gods sake.

Cheerleaders are supposed to represent the prize the football stud gets if he works his arse off. Nothing will make a young male work harder, that's for sure...

minnow, where do you come up with this stuff?!?!?!?
You should go on a comedy tour, I think you would do very well.

Many years ago, I too, was an Albert Lea High School cheerleader.  So many years ago that at the time girls were not allowed to be in a competitive sport.  There was no basketball, track, cross country or any other competitive sports for girls.  The only thing girls could do was be a cheerleader. And in response, to a former poster who wrote that things have changed in 25 years, I would like to leave you with this: In a 1968 competition for best cheerleading squad in the upper midwest, the Albert Lea squad took first place. I think our very large trophy still graces the entrance to the High School.  No, we couldn't play competitively in any other sport but to us, cheerleading was that sport.  I am proud I was a cheerleader.

just keep cheering, just keep cheering...

Cheerleading has changed since then...At ALHS the cheerleaders get no respect and they aren't considered "true athletes" compared to the other real sports. Maybe it was was sport back in 1968 then but it sure itsn't now.

Guess you guys really need to get out to some of the sporting events. We were at the wrestling meet Friday nite and I think alot of ppl were surprised at just how high they toss their flyers and how much work it is for the spotters to catch her and help her down safely. They don't just go out there and do it, they must practice, synchronize and lift weights, give those girls some credit. If you don't , then you haven't watched them perform!!!
