Two arrested in county burglaries
By Joseph Marks, Tribune staff writer

Saturday, February 11, 2006 5:29 PM CST

Alex Scott, 25, of Albert Lea and Malena Maria Barrientos, 29, of Albert Lea, were arrested Thursday for a string of house burglaries and car thefts across Freeborn County, lasting several nights.

As of Friday evening, deputies were still searching for Thomas Vaale, a third suspect in the burglaries and thefts.

The Freeborn County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at a residence where the three suspects were staying, Thursday evening, according to a complaint issued Friday by the Freeborn County Attorney's Office. Police executed the warrant after receiving information from a “confidential, reliable informant” that Barrientos had been showing off necklaces, allegedly given to her by Scott.

Barrientos was previously pulled over by a Minnesota State Trooper in the area of Hollandale and Maple Island, Feb. 3 at approximately 2:30 a.m., around the same time a string of thefts from cars occurred in the area.

Thomas Vaale was pulled over by Albert Lea police Jan. 30 in a vehicle later connected by license number to suspicious activity at a rural residence.

When a search warrant was executed on the home of Scott, Barrientos and Vaale, deputies found a Glock pistol in a silver case, reported stolen Jan. 26 and a safe containing savings bonds reported stolen Jan. 27, according to the complaint.

Barrientos and Scott, who were present when the search warrant was executed, were placed under arrest and taken to the Freeborn County Adult Detention Center.

When interviewed by deputies, Scott reportedly admitted Barrientos had driven Vaale and him to the residence containing the Glock pistol. He said Barrientos stayed in the car while he stole the pistol and Vaale stole jewelry.

He also admitted to participating in three to four nights of “car shopping” with Vaale, saying Barrientos drove them one night. He admitted to pawning 51 stolen CDs in Austin for $1 each and pawning two rings and a necklace.

Scott said the rest of the jewelry and collectible coins reported stolen from residences were thrown out the car window on the interstate, according to the complaint.

When interviewed, Barrientos reportedly admitted to driving Scott and Vaale to the home containing the pistol, knowing they would commit a burglary. She also admitted to driving and parking along the road while the two stole items from vehicles, admitting this is what she was doing when she was pulled over by the state trooper.

Freeborn County Sheriff's Deputies put in several days of overtime during the rash of burglaries, during which Sheriff Mark Harig counted 14 thefts from cars parked in garages and yards and 15 burglaries of residences.

Scott was charged Friday Feb. 10 with burglary in the first degree, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine; burglary in the second degree which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine and two counts of possession of stolen property which together carry a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and a $200,000 fine.

Barrientos was charged with aiding and abetting burglary in the first degree which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine and two counts of possession of stolen property which together carry a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $120,000 fine.

Weren't you the one telling me it was my neighbor kids......and if I was nicer to them they wouldn't have to steal? Guess you were wrong again.

I did a little checking and my info says that Marie Barrientos was or is living at 1221 Madison Avenue in Albert Lea - maybe all 3 of them were...

can we pull together and help bring in the third guy...  :dunno:

let's help the cops out and see if we can track down Tom Vaale...

I good way to start is to make contact with people with the same last name as him - due to the rarity of the name most people you talk to with that last name will be related - and some will be interested in helping find him...

some probably aren't even aware of it yet...

I saw their pictures in the paper and I have to say they look like one of those pictures on a Meth poster. I bet their dealer is pissed right now, because their dealer had to of been making money of this little crime wave. I wonder how much meth 14 thefts from cars parked in garages and yards and 15 burglaries of residences can buy?

Also, someone I work with said the lady that got arrested had her children taken away by the state a while ago.
Maybe all the burglaries were because she was looking for her kids?
:sarcasm:

Indeed, let's track this little sonofabitch down! I wonder if anyone that reads this forum could post  a photo of loser. I remember awhile ago there was a person named Vaale that was involved with some thefts from Trails Travel Center. I wonder if this is the same Vaale?

It is hard to believe that two people could do so much.  I have to believe that there was more than one other person involved.  I am sure once they are interrogated the little birdies will begin to sing.  He is another little tid bit which adds to the stupidity of the criminals.  Barrientos was reported as "showing off" her new jewelry which she received from her boyfriend.  Do ya think that her friends may have been just a little suspicious???  DA.

Anyone who steals is a loser. If you can't afford it, then work harder and save, it will mean so much more to you. Guess no one ever told them that.  Sorry, about ranting, I just will never understand the mentality behind it. Someone obviously worked to obtain the possession and they think they have the right to go and take it from them. I hate that mentality and refuse to have compassion for anyone who can relate to it. There, I feel so much better for getting that off of my chest!!!

ATB- Of course I concur with your point completely, even though I made some poor decisions as a youth (isn't that what youth is for?).

I have decided that it is imperative that I started taking my kids to church- very much to the disdain of my wife. I think it's critical at a young age that they learn to have accountability to something other than themselves and their parents. Granted - I'm an agnostic in the real sense of the word, but I feel that children need to know that they belong to a God, a society, a world, or anything beyond themselves, and that their actions will impact everyone. When I had to take 15 bags of trash to the dump after Christmas I was absolutely appalled at the environmental irresponsiblity that exhibited and was very worried about the lessons my children were learning. My wife wasn't raised with religion and she really believes her morality goes no farther than our household- we could afford all this crap so therefore it was our responsiblity to buy it for them. I obviously disagree.

We (as the American Culture) encourage instant gratification no matter the cost. If we're tired we sell soft drinks that will wire the most die hard coffee drinker to children under 13 rather than encourage the benefits of a good night sleep. If our kids can't go right to sleep we put TVs in their rooms rather than encourage reading a book before bed (which I did from 9yrs until I had kids of my own - now I don't have a problem falling asleep). I could go on but I hope you get my point.

It's not that the sky is falling, but so many parents would rather buy stuff to MAKE their kids happy than to DO stuff with their kids and HAVE happy kids. It's not easy but the lessons they learn when they're young will last a lifetime - whatever those lessons are.

These individuals in this story seem to be addicted to the instant gratification that only drugs and stealing will get you. I just hope that, as a parent, I am not leading my children down this path. I've decided church is the most natural for us. There are certainly many other ways, I'm sure, that will teach social responsibility to our children. It all starts with parenting.

I was agnostic until several years ago when I went to a seminar put on by a scientist - Dr. Bert Thompson...

he gives very real evidence of a creator - and a lot of evidence that the Bible is the inspired word of God - or otherwise called "God Breathed" word...

if you can get your hands on his VHS tapes - "Creation versus Evolution" - I strongly advise watching them...

they were eye opening for me...

I always used to say that the Bible wasmade up of a bunch of fairy tales - no more - I believe it is all true...

I came to that conclusion like this - once I believe the story of Creation - and once I saw things in the Bible like Genesis 17 where it talks about waiting until the 8th day to do circumcsion and all of the medical science knowledge that was not readily available in those days - once I saw that stuff I realized that everything else was a walk in the park...

I heard a story one time about an agnostic (otherwise called a skeptic) that had went over to the house of his Christian friend...

his friend invited him down in the basement - and there was a very well layed out model of the planets and the sun and the moon - very well laid out and very complicated - obviously a lot of work had gone into setting it up...

the skeptic asked his Christian friend how long it took him to set it all up and the Christian just smiled at him and siaid - I didn't set all this up - it just happened by itself - poof one day it was just there... :p

I currently believe in people. The power of people to do both good and bad. I'm a pragmatist in many ways.

I'm looking at all the religious hatred in the world today. I'm seeing our own country being torn apart by religious beliefs. I'm watching the muslim world despise the US as a Christian Nation. I'm seeing the muslim world gathering together for an all out assault on Israel. I'm seeing our own southern baptists calling out the "muslim extremists." Where does it end? We look at the childrens' crusade as barbaric, joke about the inquisition.

It seems to me that somewhere between the scriptures we read, the geography of where we live and DNA we all share, so many have forgotten that we're all humans sharing the same planet for a very brief period of time.

You are so right. I was just thinking the other night about the United States. What is so united about it. It's got to be that it's Democrats and Republicans at each other's throats. There is nothing United about it. Why can't people just forget they are democrats or republicans and work together to get something accomplished, instead of working against each other?

in reality they agree about a great deal - but in their zeal to power grab they disagree about how to accomplish even the smallest of things...

it is ridiculous...

maybe there needs to become a United Party or a Unification Party...

Posted by nphilbro on Feb. 12 2006,9:29 pm
Four parties would represent us better at this point.

1. Fiscal Conservative Constitutional Conservatives.
2. Fiscal Conservative Constitutional Liberals.
3. Fiscal Liberal Constitutional Concervatives.
4. Fiscal Liberal Constitutional Liberal.

Obviously these are not the exact terms but I think the point is basically made. Most republicans are horrified by the deficit. During the Clinton years republicans hated the fact that a dem caught up the national debt. I'm not trying to break this down to party lines and I have no evidence to say what I did is true. But, these days, I don't think many Americans feel that there is a party that completely represents them (if it were a bell curve, currently 10% of America should feel completely represented). I'm a lib on some issues, conservative on others. The two party system has let both parties become power hungry and irresponsible at the expense of the citizens and for the price of corporation$.

Posted by REPOMAN on Feb. 12 2006,10:06 pm
well said - I agree with most of your points...

I profess to be a Republican - but they lose me on some issues  - like gun control...

and there are some Republicans that are embarrassing to be identified with - Tom Delay, Newt Gingrich and George Gillespie... :p

Posted by nphilbro on Feb. 12 2006,10:48 pm
Oddly, I find Patty Murray- D.WA and Hillary Clinton D. NY to be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAyyyyyyyyyyyy out of my league.

Hillary is supposed to be the face of my party??? Not even a little bit. Yet- am I supposed to vote for Cheney instead???

There's the breakdown. We've seperated ourselves from each other too much. Politicians have tried to widen the gap as much  as possible to catch the fall in votes.

First of all, paragraphs, paragraphs, it is hard to read a wall of text without breaks.

Second of all, that whole situation screams white lazy, live off the system and pretend to be disabled trailer trash.

The kids need to be stripped from the home, placed into military school or the mines, seems they are on a great path of becoming a bunch of nothings just like their parents.

Those so-called adults, probably need to be culled from human population, as they are nothing but wastes of O2 levels and skin.  Prime example of why the gene pool needs a little chlorine.

You need to arm yourself, learn how to use it, and train daily.

Obviously she didn't have to serve a significant amount of time in incarceration for her alleged crimes against others.

No big surprise.

How about someone important becoming pro-active for ljfuller3 before something drastic occurs?

Now now, lets not do that. Its been a nice two days without them here. They left a couple of days ago. Lets hope they take a really long trip and get stuck there for a while.

What I find interesting is that by the 7th of the month they were always broke, yet just 4 days ago they showed up at their house and unloaded a bunch of stuff. Where did they get it and why are they watching to see if we are looking and why sneek it into their house. Makes one wonder who the victim is this time and by what means did they get it.

Don't feel bad lijfuller3...I myself have a bonehead neighbor. He decided shortly after we moved in to have "No Parking" signs put in directly in front of our property. Since he won in suing the city once before, they give him what he wants. We were told by one Ms Vicky, we could have them removed after a set amount of time. She moved, our time ran out, we sought out our Council person...who then took it to the City Engineer. There it got locked up...and has been for over three years now. It appears that the decision can't be made whether or not they should come down. Did I mention we live on a section of a street that is 1 foot too wide to be a one way? Yep...we were told that. We also do not get our street plowed curb to curb, so in the winter we are 6 feet shorter on space (3 point back up job in the middle of Winter...weeee!!!).

At least you have some kind of humor to write about. Currently our neighbor is watering the dirt alleyway after being told to stop by the Police. I guess I should be glad..he isn't spinning out every time he turns into/out of the alley anymore, and he doesn't try to mow everyone's lawn anymore...

Posted by ljfuller3 on Jul. 07 2012,8:35 am
I dont have cable or TV. Hubby left us in quite the mess here. Had to shut off all that and just go with the basic needs. Internet is a necessity. lol

This all would be funny and entertaining except they seem to want to include me in it. I will have to share the Jerry chant with my other neighbors. I'm sure they would get a kick out of it.  we will have to try that. but then again, I did say the word Rabies to my dog and got the cops called on me for harassment and had a dead bat put in my pool the next day. Cops said what did you expect after saying rabies. wonder what he would do if I started the chant?  lol

Yesterday the temps up here got to be around 82 to 85 degrees. It was really hot. As we sat outside trying to cool down, we noticed that Malena's 10 yr old son was also sitting outside next to the curb. He was wearing sweats and a jacket. Pretty warm clothes for how hot it was outside. After about an hour went by, we realized that this was their new punishment for him. He continued to sit there for the next 3 hours like this. He was not given water to drink or allowed to move into the shade, he had to sit in one spot. No one came out to check on him, they all sat in the house with the air conditioner going, keeping cool. I was surprised that he did not get sick from the warm clothes in this heat.

Today they were outside during the cooler hours and he was inside. When it got hotter out, they went inside and sent him back out to sit by the curb. After about an hour, he started to play with something on the sidewalk and had moved away from where he was suppose to be. When Joab walked out the door, the child about jumped out of his skin when he saw him. Since we were sitting there, Joab didnt do anything to him.

The temps are suppose to get in the 90's this week. I am concerned that they may make him sit out there in this heat with no water again. If we call the cops or report it to social services, they are just going to lie about it.

If what you're saying is true, you need to report it to the police. That is child endangerment and should be taken very seriously.

So our county attorney can get them to plea to a lesser charge and give the apperance of a high success rate, so he can build a case for suing the county for more money whenever he feels underpaid compared to metro-area county attorneys.

lj, I thought you didn't like where you were because of the neighbors. Isn't this an opportunity to move somewhere else?

Were you buying the house contract for deed and he changed his mind? If there's an actual written contract, you could have a legal case against the homeowner. If you were just renting, how does this change much other than having to move (which I realize is a giant pain, but sometimes puts you in a better place).

To be completely honest with you, you have gave way to much information to the public about your situation. Maybe your landlord reads this and theres really other reasons why you are moving out. Do you think they really tell you the truth?

Maybe your neighbors read it and they all know who you are and think the same of you?

Whos really the problem, I would keep this gossip more confidental.

As far as I can see, the jail time, fines and restitution, the police, the courts havent taught these two anything. Who knows, maybe if people keep calling the police on these two, maybe they will at least try to be law abiding like the rest of us.

Malena is at it again. I had hoped that the last time I wrote, they had learned to leave me alone and I could live in peace. Not so. They are once again accusing me of providing prescription meds to their child by way of my grandson.  Yes... this one again.

What makes them think anyone is going to believe this lie a second time is beyond me. Not sure what set this one off or who they are hoping to sue this time around, or how many are on this second list but I called the sheriffs office right away and talked to them. They advised me, strongly advised me to get in contact with CADA and get a restraining order against them. They cant even follow simple laws, what makes them think Joab and Malena are going to abide by a restraining order?

The last time this child accused people, he got a lot of attention. I notice that lately this child has been more then likely stuck in his room 99% of the time. we havent seen him outside with the rest of the family for weeks and hes not allow to roam the house as he likes to get into things. Death row inmates at least get an hour outside a day. We see the rest of the family now and then, but not the 9 yr old. Is this a cry for help?

Posted by Botto 82 on Aug. 04 2012,12:16 pm
Go ahead and file the Harassment Restraining Order. The first time they violate it, it's a simple misdemeanor, but after that the prosecutor can jack it up to a GM or even a felony. I doubt either of them would be so cavalier with a year's jail time hanging over their heads.

Yes they are. Cops have to see it or it never happened in this town. They know this.

I think in your case, with all that's documented about these two already, that they'd see it your way. Go swear out the HRO. Give it a try.

I've lived here for over 12 years, they moved in about 4 yrs ago. they can move, I cant. medical reasons prevent it.

Judge wont grant restraining order since we live right next to each other.

I was told today that they are providing smokes to her 13 yr old. they let him drive, smoke and god only knows what else. What kid wouldnt want to stay there instead of staying with the person who has legal custody...

I'm not the only one they are harassing or trying to intimidate. they are starting on the lady across the street.

Posted by hairhertz on Aug. 06 2012,8:52 pm
not that I'd want to wish this one anyone else, maybe the lady across the street will become an ally in your quest to get the cops to do something
Posted by ljfuller3 on Aug. 07 2012,3:36 am
she's having problems created by new neighbors moving in, trying to take part of her property, she went the police, who basically said the same thing they always say. Its a civil matter. They told her it was like this no matter where you went. she said not where shes been and told them they were a joke and walked out.

And we wonder why crime is up in the neighborhood or around the country....well I dont, I know why its up. especially around here. A dog barking is a crime, but stealing things is not? somethings not right here. not right at all.

Posted by ljfuller3 on Aug. 07 2012,8:23 pm
learn something new everyday. neighbor on other side said Joab and Malena have been trying to push me over the edge to get me out of the neighborhood. must not like being law abiding citizens while I am here. Explains why they tried to spead the rumor about the pills again. Plus they are claiming I am trying to break into their house. been in there, they have sold or pawned anything of value that they have. So why would I want to break into a house that has less then I do?

To steal nothing???

Joab is really ticked off that we found the property markers and know where our lines are at now. seems he has been trying to take more of the other neighbors yard as he tried to do with my side.  Just what dont these people steal or try to steal?????

Been in there !
After all the bs. that they have put you through, why would you have recently "been in there"

IMO , from all the stories that you have told here, you know way to much of thier personal going ons for someone who hates them.
not sticking up. for them!!!!!!!!!
Wondering about you??

I concur 2034 :(
Posted by ljfuller3 on Aug. 10 2012,5:12 am
Sorry I worded that wrong. when I said "been in there", I meant it to mean prior to my tools disappearing. have no intentions of ever going there again, or allowing them in my home either.

They have a habit of selling or pawning things shortly after they get them and I am assuming since they have done that since I first met them, that they are still doing it.

Posted by Self-Banished on Aug. 10 2012,11:08 am
Well if they're still stealing your stuff, get an engraver, mark your property in a discreet spot, if it comes up missing start cruising the pawn shops, they will have a record of who the bought it from.
Posted by ljfuller3 on Aug. 14 2012,12:07 am
Nothing left for them to steal. they already took everything. whats left is locked up tight. sent them a message through the neighbor on the end. told him that as long as they left my stuff alone, stop damaging my things, I wouldnt call cops on them. So far so good, no problems.

They finally let the 10 yr old out of what I refer to as his prison cell. His room. doesnt last long before they are sending him back. never see them playing with him or doing anything. When he gets out of that house, hes out of control. He almost got his by two cars the other day. at one end of the block, he swerved in front of a car then went down to the other end of the block and almost got hit by another one. Not sure what they finally caught him on, but sent him back to his room a short time later.

These people have no clue how to raise a special needs child. hes just a paycheck to them. always will be.

we had helicoptors flying low overhead the other day. local plant is making major changes taking photos of plant. neighbor said "you should have seen them inside, just freaking out, saying the FBI or CIA was out to get them" trying to arrest them.  another ploy to get them declared as needing SSI? is she now trying to mimic Joabs illness to get help?

I found out something quite interesting tonight. Seems my neighbor P was telling me that Joab and Malena were telling him that I had grabbed his grand daughter in the crotch while she was in my yard playing with my grand children. Not sure how they determined how I could do that since everyone saw me in the front yard the whole time she was here that one day, and only one day. P then tells me that he found out that it was Joab who had grabbed her in the crotch while lifting her up into his camper. Makes me wonder if something really did happen between him and his ex's daughter.

Not only that but they are accusing me of drinking beer every night, not sharing with anyone (havent drank in years) and didnt realize that diet pepsi was beer.  Their also saying that I am doing meth as I stay up all night on my computer watching them. Wonder just what was causing my insomnia that i have had since I was about 5 yrs old. Plus I must be pretty amazing to be able to be able to see through the wall thats behind my computer.

I think they are just upset that I didnt call the police on them yesterday. They were outside as we were. Their dog came after my dog, came into my yard. I thought about calling the police, but then decided to call my son in Alaska and talk to him. Joab and Malena put the dogs in the house, got all the kids to sit on the front step to wait for the police, something they always do when they know the cops are coming. Boy did they look stupid sitting there for 15 min and no cops showed up.

So tonight as I was visiting with my friend across the street and with P,  they called the police on me and complained that my dogs were constantly barking. I have one dog, my neighbor has one dog. They did bark but like we told the officer, it was only when they saw someone walking and we shut them up right away. Are they harassing me trying to provoke me into calling the police on them?

I am beginning to think they have an obsession with me for some sick reason. they constantly watch my house, watch what I am doing, immediately ask P what we talked about when they see he came down to talk to us or they try to get my other neighbor to tell them what I am doing. They make up stories about me, blaming me for what happens. They watch who comes and goes from my house, know I have insomnia and dont sleep at night.

Now I'm told hes back drinking alot more again.  Plus not taking his meds, and their doing more fighting.

It sounds like they might not be the only ones with an obsession.

not obsessed, very observant and listen when people talk. hard not to notice when you sit outside and they make a scene.

But you've been bringing up their every move here for months. You say you can't go to the police because they don't care and the neighbors will lie anyway. You say you can't move because of a disability, but there must be other places you can live.

Instead you continually bring it up here, what they are doing. Why not remove yourself from the situation and get on with your life instead of letting them govern yours?
