*Yawn*
The guy is an idiot.  The US isn't a democracy, it's a constitutional republic, and as such the often repeated nonsense of "will of the people" isn't how the supreme court goes about its rulings, the supreme court is bound by constitutional law.
I mean come on, this is stuff you learned back in 6th grade in how a constitutional framework is what is suppose to guide our system of govt.

You're first mistake was thinking vox is in any way a reputable source.
Secondly, the states are what set gerrymandering and isn't at all any of the federal govts business as per the 10th Amendment.
So yes the USSC, ruled correctly according to constitutional law.

what's wrong about it?

you probably didn't even read any of it

so you thought you would just take an easy potshot at the second one?

so these rulings aren't bad for black voters?

I've read enough of vox so called journos to already know how it went down.
And this just proves the point where vox has decided to interject race into an issue when that wasn't the case, the Louisiana supreme court rejected the need for an additional district based on population, it was the states demos that were trying to bolster a whole new district based strictly on race and the state court said nah bro, which is why it went up the USSC, the district in question is the district I'm in and as such my rep is that dipshit troy carter, blacks in this district are slowly rejecting electing another dem rep and as such the demos needed to bolster the dem vote by creating this new district.

This time Samuel Alito has been busted accepting extravagant luxury fishing trips and gifted private jet flights costing $100,000 (one way). propublica?  pfft it's an enquirer tier rag.  Hell maybe they should do one on a more recent one from a couple years ago on sotomayer?  Taking $3k in money from a company in which was involved in a supreme court case?
Or how about ruth bader ginsberg?  She got transportation, lodging and food as a guest of billionaire morris kahn.
The financial disclosure form was under different rules 15yrs ago.
There were other judges that were also present on the same fishing trip and personal hospitality need not be reported.

All of this is a nothing-burger.

^^ Rules on Gifts in the Federal Government

Government ethical rules restrict giving and accepting gifts among employees and from outside interests. Policies on exchanges of gifts among employees—as well as on acceptance of gifts or hospitality from other sources—are set by government-wide rules found in the Code of Federal Regulations at 5 CFR 2635 201–205 and 301–304.

Under current regulation these so called Judges can only except gifts based on a personal relationship when it is clear that the motivation is not his official position;
gifts of $20 or less per occasion, not to exceed $50 in a year from one source....

You do realize the SCOTUS sets their own rules for such matters, yes?
Congress does not over see the SCOTUS, you know all part of the separate but equal deal.

Also find it funny your lil short brained pic, left out Kagan, Sotomayer and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who equally have done the same thing as Alito and Thomas are being accused of.
It's a nothing burger and an obvious hit job against judges who aren't leftist hacks.

Well bro, I'll say this....
If ANY justice is being anywhere near what could be considered a bribe they should be investigated.
I'm not so naive as to think there isn't any politics involved in any decision on whom to investigate, and that's the sad part.
Our gov't has lost it's way a LONG time ago.
It's all Jets vs Sharks at this point and until we the people demand better we will continue to get the same shit candidates we've been getting the last few cycles.
I know that with justices it's different as they aren't elected.
But investigating them when warranted is fine with me. I don't wanna think the highest court in the land is for sale to the highest bidder...

As I said before if propublica is gonna do a piece and be considered a reputable rag instead of signaling out Thomas and Alito it should have dug into all of the jurists and CJ, but instead chose the "let's make it a political hit job" route.
It's all done due to the fact the SCOTUS is finally rejecting the tiers of scrutiny and interest balancing nonsense that has taken hold in the inferior courts in the last few decades and telling the courts enumerated rights are not subject to public/govt balancing interests.

You're too young to remember how bad things got during the Civil Rights Movement it made BLM look like a walk in the park, it tore at the very fabric of our Society.

Affirmative Action was a product of the Civil Rights Movement, the Court should have left well enough alone.  It helped reduce discrimination and promote diversity. It also create more opportunities for people who face systemic barriers or biases. It also benefited society as a whole by fostering social justice and inclusion.

Affirmative action is a policy that aims to increase the representation of historically disadvantaged groups in education, employment, or other areas. It is often based on criteria such as race, ethnicity, gender, or disability.

The Court has put US on a slippery slope!

As to Obama Care, it caved to Corporate Republican demands did little to control cost...

I'm not a Liberal I'm a Progressive, IF I HAD MY WAY we'd have a Single Payer Healthcare System like the rest of the CIVILIZED Industrial World..

Government-run healthcare can provide universal access, lower costs, better quality, more equity, and more efficiency than private market systems. It can also reduce administrative complexity, improve public health, and promote social solidarity.

NOTHING the government has EVER run is efficient, cheaper, or better quality.

That much trust in government only leads to dependency which is exact opposite of what why we want government. While I agree with you I'd prefer a singe payer system, but not sure I want the government running it. Oversight yes, but running it? Hell no.

Based on my Military Service Record I qualified for VA medical treatment in a high priority group. So essentially I'm participating in a government run single payer system.

I never used the VA during my working years my Employer provided excellent insurance, problem was Insurance is a big and ever increasing expense and as an individual Employer there's little that can be done to control costs.

I still carry a supplement to my Medicare as a precaution because the VA operates at the whims of the Government.

Our current Healthcare System is a hodgepodge of robber barons paying themselves multi-million dollar compensation packages with our premiums while denying healthcare and complicating the system.

How Bad Is U.S. Health Care? Among High-Income Nations, It's the Worst, Study says
< https://www.newsweek.com/united-states-health-care-rated-worst-637114 >

We do agree a single payer system would be the path..
A single payer healthcare system would simplify payment administration and reduce drug costs, which are major sources of savings.
A single payer healthcare system would also increase healthcare utilization by providing universal coverage, which could improve health outcomes but also raise costs.
A single payer healthcare system would likely save money over time, even in the first year of operation, according to most economic analyses. However, some studies suggest that costs could initially increase or vary depending on the design and implementation of the system.
A single payer healthcare system would have more incentive to invest in public health measures and preventive care, which could lower costs and improve outcomes.

And the VA doesn't exactly have  stellar record (especially as of the last decade) of providing quality care (or any care at all in some cases) KARE 11 has a series of really great investigative reporting about the local VA here. So much so that they ended up getting a Dr. fired for her absolutely shoddy work.

As for private sector, there's a shit ton that needs to be done. Way too many kickbacks for prescribing specific meds, etc...
While I hated Obamacare I was hoping that at least something good would come of it eventually but alas that was not to be.  Didn't change anything about the quality and/or cost of care, just how it was paid for. All I saw was my rates increase every year at higher percentages than before it.

Donald Trump's latest court filing is a doozy: his attorneys filed a petition for a writ of mandamus - what's called an 'extraordinary writ' - in the Georgia state Supreme Court demanding that the court stop Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from indicting him. The problem is, there is no legal basis whatsoever for the relief Trump is seeking, as this video discusses. What's becoming increasingly clear by the day is that Donald Trump's desperation is showing.

Pressure Grows on Clarence Thomas to Resign as ProPublica Finds More Undisclosed Lavish Trips, Gifts
In the wake of ProPublica's bombshell report detailing even more lavish gifts from right-wing billionaires to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, five House Democrats are calling on the Justice Department to investigate Thomas under the Ethics in Government Act for accepting the series of gifts from wealthy benefactors  without following disclosure laws. Federal judges are required to disclose gifts worth more than $1,000 — including travel. ProPublica's report documents Justice Thomas accepting 38 destination vacations, 26 private jet flights, 12 VIP passes to sporting events and eight helicopter flights, all paid for by wealthy patrons. We speak with co-author of the ProPublica investigation Brett Murphy about the process of revealing these lavish gifts and why even other judges consider it "an unprecedented amount of largesse for a justice to be accepting, let alone accepting and not disclosing."

The problem with using thom hartmann as a source is that he isn't schooled in constitutional law.  His last anti 2nd Amendment screed of lies was ripped apart by those who are accredited in not only in early American history and law but as well as those in constitutional law.

Thom's main thrust is "interest balancing", however the supreme court in the past has rejected many of those types of arguments and as of late has really begun to shut those types of arguments down.  Basically, thom doesn't know what he's talking about.

You do know it takes money to mount challenges and see it through the judicial process, yes?  It's not like they get to automatically start at the supreme court.
It's almost as if it has to start in the lower inferior courts first.

In the end all that matters is if the current law is constitutional as determined by text, and history.

So much for the Constitution and States Rights, the Supreme Court just set a precedent that will bite US all in the ass.

The 14th Amendment Section 3 is self-executing! Hence the last sentence of Section 3...

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

By what you are trying to argue and was brought up during oral arguments...
Should a state or states determine who should be qualified and unqualified for the rest of the nation?  The obvious answer is no and that was the case here, colorado overstepped their authority and it isn't self executing, it must be executed by congress and congress alone since it's a federal matter.

Even the two dimbulbs (soto and brown) agreed that it's congress' sole role and not that of the states.

Posted by Expatriate on Mar. 04 2024,1:11 pm
^^ Texas and a few other RED States were attempting to disqualify Biden under some bogus actuation using the the 14th Amendment Section 3...as retaliation for Trump's insurrection disqualification.

I believe this is what accounts for the 9-0 vote..

Last sentence of 14 Amendment Section 3
But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
It should have been Congress that allowed Trump back on the ballot NOT the Supreme Court according to the Constitution of the Untied States...

Nonetheless the Constitution and States Rights have taken a HIT!!

Posted by Grinning_Dragon on Mar. 04 2024,2:46 pm
Maybe stop listening to msnbc clownshow.
biden should be kicked off anyways for being a retard, plagiarist, pedo.

Anyways.  You are a lil to late, federalism took a hit when the 14th was passed and ratified, as it weakened state powers and authority.
This isn't about state rights, it's about power and authority and under the 14th states do NOT have the power nor authority in this matter, it has always been congress' purview.
