It's a great place to be from. Don't regret leaving one bit. Feel bad for my parents. The only reason I ever come back for the most part.

^^Ive been back once since my Dad passed, I wanted to see my cousin who I hadn’t seen in decades.

Considering how the town is run I understand why I don’t come back, IT’S DIEING! If not already dead. I’ve said it many times, the town is a logistical dream but no one wants to take advantage of it.

My wife & i both grew up in A.Lea & have seen the changes over the years. The mom & pop stores are mostly gone as are most of the good paying jobs. The uptown is a shell of it's self from what it once was. The over all population of the county has been declining since the late forty's. The manufacturing jobs have been slowly eliminated . The service jobs are low paying. so what is left for employment? We have been coming back to A. Lea for the wife's eye surgery & have seen the decline first hand. It is a beautiful city with the lakes, parks & big Island. Growing up here during the 40's & 50's was nice but things change & A.Lea did not change & keep up with the times. One example was the losing of the packing plant whether that was a positive  or negative thing is up for debate. if it would have opened back up in my humble opinion it would have changed the town dramatically. At that time the packing industry was just beginning to cut the hourly rate. I think we all know the outcome of that. A. Lea is to far from the cities & to close to Iowa, regardless of I90 & I35 intersection! We now live in Lakeville & it is thriving. I talked to a realtor the other day & she informed me that you could not buy a new home in Lakeville for $400,000! She had a showing for a new home & had 22 prospects to buy it! Lakeville has two excellent schools with sport facilities second to none. Both will have domes next year. Lakeville is basically a bedroom community. They buy farm land & fill them up with high priced two Or three story homes it is just amazing to witness the progress firsthand! We enjoyed are time in A.Lea but this is something to behold.  :soapbox:
