US Trade Deficit in goods jumps 8.5% in December - softer 4th Quarter GDP

US Nation Debt will rise to 98% of GDP by 2030 CBO Projects - deficits will exceed $1T a year for at least 11 years.

So, hows that easily winnable trade war working out?

And, hows those tax cuts more than paying for themselves working out?

More than 1 in 3 Americans — or 91 million people — say they’re afraid they’ll max out their credit card when making a large purchase.

Still, most Americans continue to take on ever-increasing amounts of credit card debt.

The US economy has gained 6.6 million jobs during Trump's first 36 months in office. But in a comparable 36-month period at the end of Obama's tenure, employers added 8.1 million jobs.

During Obama's last 36 months in office, the average monthly gain was 224,000 jobs. Under Trump so far, employers have been adding an average of 182,000 jobs a month.

The gross domestic product figures haven't hit over 4% economic growth on a quarterly basis during Trump's time in office. Trump's 2018 yearly growth of 2.9% matched Obama's 2015 figure, but on both a quarterly and annual basis, the Trump economy has not yet exceeded the best quarters of the Obama years.

The US economy in 2019 grew at 2.3%, its slowest pace in three years, according to number released by the Commerce Department last month.

Nothing with how the markets are reacting follows any logic.  Yes the virus is an unknown.  Yes it is spreading world wide. And yes the preliminary information shows it is 10 to 20 times more deadly than influenza.  However, these drastic swings and the huge fall in bond yields is way over done. Our markets have gotten out of sink with reality and using actual info on valuations and such.  This has been going on for some time.   Once more is learned about the virus things will stabilize and everything will run back up. I don’t think it will go all the way up as the markets were falsely over valued already.

The panic needs to stop.  The non factual info needs to stop.

i would appreciate some one to explain just what the fed is doing by dumping billions of dollars  into the economy & just where this enormous amount of money is coming from. what would the economy be like without this activity? where is the economy headed recession, depression or the unknown. it seems like china is the key to lots of our manufacturing (ie autos) & we are way to dependent on china to keep our factories up & running. it seems as though our factories have not heeded the advice of diversification & spreed its business around. Italy is now in a complete lock down is this our future if so this will be a rough ride. we now have a panic buying spree on paper goods, water, sanitizing fluids, etc what will happen if the panic goes to hoarding food. the government needs to get a handle on this before it gets out of hand  & then there will be no stopping it. imagine our factories closing, people out of work, no pay, unable to pay rent or mortgages, car payments, buy food, etc. this could get real ugly fast. Saudi Arabia dumping oil at the rate of not being seen for 30 years, just where is this heading.  lots of things going on right now & none of it good.
Posted by was1 on Mar. 10 2020,4:19 pm
Agree.

If the economy was as good as we’ve been told for the last 3 years I don’t think we would be seeing this now, definitely not to this extent. The markets have been falsely propped up by unfounded tax cuts and a Twitter president whose only focus is the markets.  His total lack of leadership on the COVD19 outbreak has exasperated the market swings.

People are panicking because they are not being told the facts.  And now we are being told things really are not that bad with the virus, it’s the media.  No it’s the facts. It is spreading at a very fast rate and is in the range right now of about 50 times more deadly than the flu.

Now to save the markets the president wants more tax cuts and bail outs to businesses.  How are we paying for that?  This is going to be a long and bumpy ride.

And these aren't all loans there's grants in the mix Free Money...why can't all these business entities in "the best economy of all time" (Trump's words) survive on their own... pull yourself up by your bootstraps..I believe that's one of your phases....And what's with the secrecy of which corporations get this money? Posted by Self-Banished on Mar. 24 2020,8:23 am
^^ the economy is stalling because nitwit politicians like Walz and others across the country and panicking and have no idea how an economy works (much like you have no clue). Starve an engine of fuel and it stalls. Many corporations like Target for example have backed up their work force, offered raises, enacted proactive plans to weather the storm. Unfortunately there are some sections of our economy the either operate on razor thin margins or are irresponsible and in my opinion, not essential which should be allowed to fail.

Pulling myself up by my bootstraps? This is what I do when things get rough. I notice that bitch Pelosi loaded up the stimulus bill with all sorts of pork, one, a provision that would favor unions. That sure is “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. :flame:  :sarcasm:

Posted by Self-Banished on Mar. 28 2020,10:06 am
^^ I generate paperwork from the truck. As far as contact from the dispatcher/ depot/ rail yard personnel, All done by phone, automated kiosks, iPhone apps, I have very little human contact. It’s slowed a little, not much. Mostly looking for empty cans to load because certain lines are short because of incoming loads. Some lines are shipping in empties, you need to remember China has two billion people to feed and can’t come close to doing it themselves. Animal feed (ethanol by product) soybeans, whey powder are the main exports and demand is heavy. Essential service   I can pretty much go anywhere and claim I’m doing transportation work.

As far as an earlier post where you “worry” about me handling containers.

1 I’ve heard the virus only lives about 17 days on a surface. The typical travel time for a can from China to here is 30+ days, 30 days exposed to a fairly harsh environment, plus I have nothing to do with unloading them. (Non of my customers have had any reports of infection)

2 there are about 350 drivers/contractors in this market, we were hauling before the virus scam started and have been to this day, no reports of sickness.

The real bonus lately is traffic, no rush hour whatsoever.👍

^^The pandemic isn't his fault, but his inept response to this threat and the lack of preparedness are HIS fault..

Supply-sider policy has led to eliminating strategic government positions, planning and a lack of medical stockpile.

We're all in this mess both health-wise and financially because of an ineffective government response and preparedness...

The democratic candidates were not getting the intelligence briefing regarding the concern that trump was.

Yes the kind of, half assed, limited travel from China. However it has been proven that the outbreak in New York got there through Europe.

He doesn’t listen to anything other than the voices in his head. He only worries about himself and how others perceive him and that has greatly harmed this country.

China will never become superior to the US, not as long as we continue to elect people like out President, they have far too many problems, most notably over population. It takes a lot food and energy to maintain that kind of structure.

The first reported virus infection in the US was January 21, before that the WHO was assuring the world that everything was OK. It became more and more apparent that they were in the Chinks pocket, this is why our president wants to hold funding from them.

Nazi immigration policies don’t help either.

The trend of recent history is a Democrat POTUS brings us from recession to a booming economy, and it only takes a Republican one term to flip it back to deep recession and crisis.

History repeats itself with budget data also, from a balanced budget of Clinton or at least much reduced deficit under Obama to...  Well, you know where the deficit arrow goes with the likes of Reagan, Bush, Trump.

The tweet drama and jabs at the press only distract: The GOP just can't manage the economy, the budget, or the federal response to crisis.  Vote in a party who makes the graph numbers go in the right direction again.

I’m well employed, 6 figure salary, job is an essential service, but I’m able to work at home instead of going in.

Only debt I have is my mortgage, which is at a rate that I feel like I’m stealing. And, per my discover card monthly credit report I have a credit rating of 850.  So I’m doing just fine.

My main concern is the national debt and how the GOP has gone from “debt bad” to “who cares about debt”. His is unsustainable and will cause great consequences.

But what does some illiterate, inbred, POS like you care?   Your “leader” tells you everything is wonderful, the best ever and like the weak-minded fool you are you not only believe it but try to defend it.  Only you do so sans any facts or evidence to back your claims.

What gets me is your defeatist attitude, it sounds like you think we’re heading towards a black hole, maybe we are.

We'll use this example for you. If I put my hand into a pail of water the pull it out, does it leave a hole? No, it doesn’t. We have sufficient infrastructure and population to recover no matter what. People like myself and other entrepreneurs will see to that one way or another.

We’ll leave the insult out once and see what happens. :D

Posted by was1 on Apr. 20 2020,11:08 am
I’m not concerned about there economy for myself or others who are willing and able. And actually, those who are not need to adapt and not rely on the government.

My issue is the governments debt and unwillingness to address it. Shoot, they won’t even admit it.

Prior to trump all you heard was we are spending too much come from the GOP.  hannity and his penny plan and constant complaining about the debt. Now not a word. Paul Ryan and his huge debt concerns. It appears he tried and was ignored and most likely told by the bully in chief that there would be no work to cut and get the debt under control so he ended up going home.

As a country and society we cannot continue on this path. Yes the current COVID issues have greatly added to it.  However before that we were going more in debt each year than we were at the end of Obama’s time. You can’t argue that, you may be able to argue the reasons but you can’t argue that spending and debt are up since Obama’s last few years. And that’s the big issue

Trump never asked US companies to cut back, reason, they're financially strapped oil prices haven't been in range for profitability for some time with America's expensive fracking shale and Canada tar sands.

Not only are the oil companies looking for a handout but the pipeline industry also wants their FREE MONEY...

What's with all this SOCIALISM, the Court granted corporations the same rights as an individual under the 14th Amendment.

If that's the case send them $1200 with a note that says pull yourself up by your bootstraps..life is tough buttercup.

Donald Trump has made it clear that the federal government will provide welfare for the struggling oil industry.

How REPUBLICAN of Trump....

Posted by Self-Banished on Apr. 22 2020,5:50 am
^^ Big oil is mostly Russia and the Middle East, sadly , they’ll get money but what the money needs to go to is the smaller drillers, the frakers. Now unless you want to pay $5-$6 a gallon, probably more, this needs to happen. On the good side we’re filling up our strategic reserves at a cheap price.

Our economy needs to be opened up, we’re fast approaching a point where supply chains are reaching stall points and will be more and more difficult to restart, this is the fault of the governor’s who are continuing there dictator like shut downs, mostly Nazis like governor Potatohead.

Posted by was1 on Apr. 22 2020,7:06 am
Just like the last time oil fell, the shale industry got to work on how to do it more efficiently and went from needing oil in the $60's to break even to in the $30's.  They will do it again and get their cost point down some more.  Have faith.

Also, it's not just D governors with stay at home orders.  its just that those are the ones the trump is berating.

So, if all the R's now feel, as the Texas idiot said, "somethings are more important than life" then they better drop every attempt to over turn RvW and stop with the "pro life" stance.

The medical experts are now saying round 2 of this is going to be worse.  Hopefully trump stops his incessant lying, and stupid "look at me, i'm wonderful" BS and just get out of the way of the experts so THEY can get a treatment and a vaccine ASAP  or we are going to be right back to being totally shut down, for even longer.

Civil war - well I honestly believe that is what trump wants.

How about answers to the other questions

Posted by Self-Banished on Apr. 22 2020,9:57 am
^^ yes, starve to death. Our food chain is much more fragile than you think, all one has to do is go to their local grocery store, notice how bare shelves are? And this is just a beginning

Civil war? Yes, with the Nazis both handwringing and pushing it .

Round two? What, hide in our homes like frightened sheep, maybe 18 months? More people will die then the flu.

Posted by was1 on Apr. 22 2020,10:43 am
Keeping the migrant workers out of the country sure won’t help the food supply chain.

Where is the breakdown in the food supply chain?  I’ve seen plenty of dairy farmers just dumping product and crop farmers plowing under ripe crops.

Your use of nazis is highly inappropriate.  I had family members die fighting them in WWII. I have friends who had family members gassed by them. You just throwing that term around is highly inappropriate and really. Weds to stop

I’ve yet to see a D call for protests and law breaking like trump has.  I’ve yet to see trump actually give a truthful statement on all this easier. Just like when the KKK rallied and both sides had good people.

It’s already passed the entire 2019 flu season deaths. And that is in 2 months time. You really really need to get educated on this

Feb 6 first death

Since ban over 279 direct flights from China to US came with over 40,000 passengers

Over 430.000 passengers from China since Dec 31 - after even  China and the WHO said there was a problem.

He was also golfing and holding rallies.

Trump visited a golf course on Jan. 18 and 19, Feb. 1 and 15, and March 7 and 8. All of these golf outings took place at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump also hosted rallies on Jan. 9 (Ohio), 14 (Wisconsin), 28 (New Jersey) 30 (Iowa), and on Feb. 10 (New Hampshire), 19 (Arizona), 20 (Colorado), 21 (Nevada), and 28 (South Carolina).

At his rally in South Carolina on Feb. 28, Trump spoke to the audience about the new coronavirus, accusing Democrats of “politicizing” the virus and claiming the U.S. was “totally prepared.”

Just like how there are those on the right that are way off base so is she.  Neither extreme is the standard bearer.

the 2 party system has failed us, unless the goal was to totally divide us.

There is no middle ground, which is were the majority of us are.

As far as oil, and the internal combustion engine - you can not deny the environmental affects  it has had on the environment - just look at the changes to air quality since the stay at home orders.  However, it is needed and will be for a long time to come.  But, changes can be made to increase efficiencies which sadly the right as walked back.  why?  that seems like a very easy and middle ground action.

Posted by Botto 82 on Apr. 25 2020,10:19 am
All media outlets have bias. Newsrooms are usually full of wide-eyed kids fresh out of college journalism schools. And you know what kind of anti-conservative hotbeds our college campuses have become.

After a few years in the business, these wide-eyed Progressives have to start living in the real world of house payments, diapers, and the realization that a Prius costs a lot more to fix than a Ford Escape does. And maybe, after having to actually go out and try to earn a living and make a go at fitting into a Capitalist economy like their parents probably did, they begin to notice that a lot of their college contemporaries don't, instead blaming the very system that allows them to complain, locking themselves into a never-ending cycle of victimhood.

This is not some off-the-top-of-my-head hypothetical - I've worked in this industry for a good portion of my life, and had these conversations with journalists.

One thing I do know about people that work in large newsrooms: They think they're smarter than us. They think it's their job to keep us safe from the weather, from what we eat, from slippery bathtubs, from ourselves. The news directors in charge of them are tasked with getting ratings at any cost. And scaring the Hell out of viewers is a good way to do that. I swear, a weather promo campaign I saw while at KSTP was literally a "Watch us or you'll die" endeavor. That was in 2004, and things have just gotten worse since.

All newsrooms push agendas put to them by their corporate masters. With CNN, it's destroy President Trump. With FOXNews, it's generally defend President Trump, although Neil Cavuto kind of does what he wants. The rest of the big newsrooms fall somewhere in-between.

How do local outlets stack up, you may ask? Well, Betsy Singer is a card-carrying evangelical Christian. Tom Overlie is gay. You do the math.

Posted by was1 on Apr. 27 2020,9:25 am
Botto - most of your points are pretty spot on.  that is why it is important for people to get "news" from a variety of sources and then do their own fact checking.  I love to go to FOX and then CNN's websites and read articles that are of similar content to see how each is presenting it.  In a lot of ways it is sad.

I have thought for years that the USA needs a total neutral news site. One that only reports the facts, no opinion, no analysis, no reporting of what other outlets are or are not reporting.  Just here is exactly what happened, period.  And any audio/video clips with a story show the whole part that is relevant to the story, not just what makes some agenda.

Posted by was1 on Apr. 27 2020,9:38 am

You on the other hand are in your 60's carrying debt, you owe on a mortgage, not only for the house where you live but for a cabin/riverside property, you lease a new Truck probably car too.
Your Tractor/trailer your so called business is more than likely in debt to the hilt...

Not that you're alone:
New data shows that 73% of American consumers die in debt. The average total balance left over is $61,554 (and that includes mortgage debt). The numbers come from Experian FileOne and Credit.com, which examined the average debt of people who were alive in October 2016 but died in December 2016.

< https://money.com/americans-die-in-debt/   >

An owner operator lived in the property next to mine, nice guy, when he died his property went into foreclosure...he live his life much like you all the toys and mortgaged to the hilt...

^^ well let’s see, yes, I do carry debt but very little, I do lease a new pickup but we have two other newer vehicles that are paid for. My so called “tractor trailer business “ carries no debt, paid for, pay as I go. As far as my mortgages go, one property is paid for, has a positive cash flow, two carry mortgages. The main residence has more than enough equity to pay off the other. There was a fourth property but we gifted it to my son for work he’s doing on our retirement place.

Fiscal   Deficit  Debt Deficit Events
Year     (billions)  Increase   /GDP
2009  $1,413 $1,632 9.80% Stimulus Act. Bank bailout cost $250B, ARRA added $253B
2010  $1,294 $1,905 8.60% Obama tax cuts, ACA, Simpson-Bowles
2011   $1,300 $1,229 8.30% Debt crisis, recession and tax cuts reduced revenue
2012  $1,077 $1,276 6.60% Fiscal cliff
2013   $680 $672 4.00% Sequester
2014  $485 $1,086 2.70% Debt ceiling crisis
2015  $442 $327 2.40% TPP, Iran deal
2016  $585 $1,423 3.10% Presidential race

Strange how that shit works

Let’s see
2017, taxpayers were given some relief (the ones that actually pay taxes)
2018Deficit spending, neeeded because of Buster’s failures
2019 government shutdown, Nazi initiative  :dunce:
2020 military spending, desperately need because of chickenshit Buster’s lack of action
Covid? This hardly can be blamed on our President, the WHO was conspiring with China ( another reason we don’t need Gropey)

Posted by was1 on Jul. 16 2020,10:46 am
you can ignore the 2 line items with the C for covid impact.  Trump was still spending faster than O was the last number of years.

It's funny how when a D is the president all the Rs do is complain about deficit spending.  Yet, when they are in office and do it, it is just fine, and funny, someone else's fault.

Any rational person who can read and comprehend numbers will easily see that, although Trump said  he would eliminate the debt, he has been running it up faster than O and even sans covid he was on pace (and based on his policies and budgets) to out spend O if he were to be in office 8 years.

Fact Check

DOW on 2/20/2020 29,220
7/17/2020  26,720  - still down about 10% from pre COVID

S&P500 2/20/2020  3,373
           7/17/2020  3,220  - still down about 5%

NASDAQ is up about 7%

Still approximately 17M unemployed. And this will grow as people refuse to wear masks to get the virus under control.

So no, the markets are not up to what they were before (with the exception of NASDAQ) and there are 17M people unemployed.

If by handsomely you mean down for the year
Posted by Self-Banished on Jul. 17 2020,4:56 pm
Let’s explain it to you, sorry, I don’t have any crayons handy. When the Dow is at levels like it is, a 1000 to 2000 swing is not a big thing. It hasn’t been that big a swings as of late, we will recover to normal highs, if Gropey is elected all bets are off and it will most likely crash to sub Buster levels, the country will go into a depression.

This I can pretty much guarantee.

Posted by was1 on Jul. 17 2020,5:31 pm

Housing bubble was a part of it.  But due greed of the lending institutions

The Wall Street and the Financial Crisis: Anatomy of a Financial Collapse (Levin–Coburn Report) by the United States Senate concluded that the crisis was the result of "high risk, complex financial products; undisclosed conflicts of interest; the failure of regulators, the credit rating agencies, and the market itself to rein in the excesses of Wall Street".
The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission concluded that the financial crisis was avoidable and was caused by "widespread failures in financial regulation and supervision", "dramatic failures of corporate governance and risk management at many systemically important financial institutions", "a combination of excessive borrowing, risky investments, and lack of transparency" by financial institutions, ill preparation and inconsistent action by government that "added to the uncertainty and panic", a "systemic breakdown in accountability and ethics", "collapsing mortgage-lending standards and the mortgage securitization pipeline", deregulation of over-the-counter derivatives, especially credit default swaps, and "the failures of credit rating agencies" to correctly price risk

That's already happening thanks to Donald Trump's Governance or lack of may be a better term!

We have the worst unemployment since the Great Depression, we're about to see foreclosures/evictions that will be unprecedented.

At the rate we are printing money/adding to the National debt we won't even be able to service the Debt let alone provide any type Government service.

Trump will replace Hoover as the biggest failure of a President in American History, the Republican Party will pay for their part in this fiasco just as they did during the Great Depression.

^^ it’s quite simple so I’ll explain it to the Kernal, a simpleton. The markets are afraid of a Gropey administration, nothing more than that. If Gropey wins the markets will tank, speculation on energy stocks will go up and we’ll most likely be looking at a recession, quite possibly a depression.

If Trump wins and the senate keeps its present majority and possibly the House flipping we will have another economic boom.
