I am wondering what everyone thinks about volunteer firemen requesting a retirement of $4,000 per year of service. This is NOT in the Albert Lea area!

So where are these "stalwart" public servants from?

This is in Central Mn. Population of around 200. There are area contracts involved. They have $3000 per year already, now they get $4000. They also get $16 per hour when responding. This whole thing rubs me the wrong way. I know they are a needed entity to the area but...I feel it is a stretch. 
I have never had a retirement even close.

I have never had a retirement even close.Are you saying you've never had a retirement close to $4000 a year?
I thought most volunteer departments funded a lot of there benefits from the donations, fundraisers, and fees that are charged when they respond.
Some communities reap the benefits of lower home owners insurance premiums if their "volunteer" departments meet or exceed certain qualifications. All the extra time and training that the volunteers put in to achieve that may be worth it to some in those communities.
I would imagine some of the trolls on this website would have first hand knowledge and probably volunteer themselves.

That is right. I have not received a pension that pays $4000 per year of service. Typical employer match is up to 6%. I asked around, most pay around $1400. The firemen themselves pay nothing.( over 20 firemen) The city pays $12000 to the pension per year already the rest comes from Firemen's Relief. Some communities pay nothing towards it. I agree, they are a necessary part of the city, but...the pension is based on the stock market, if it tanks the city is responsible(guarantee). On the bright side, the speaker for the pension said in that scenario, the city would not have to pay all at once, We could make payments.
