Exactly! If these people want to play pickleball maybe they should look into moving to The Villages.

Posted by twingroves on Oct. 17 2013,7:47 pm
that's what one of the egg heads said that there should be a pickleball court instead
Posted by Self-Banished on Oct. 17 2013,8:17 pm

They might have moved there before the skate park was there, but the beach has been there for decades, and there were young people hanging out there after hours back then, too. If they weren't complaining about the skate park, they'd be complaining about people sometimes hanging out at the beach late at night, or people partying on boats on the lake.

It's like living next to a school and complaining about the bells ringing. If you want that much privacy, move to an exclusive gated community.

That said, have the police department patrol that area a little more at night. That's a better solution than the expense of moving the skate park down by the pool — where kids will scale the fence and then skate in the drained pool.

Were are all the adults that are going to keep a eye on things at the skate park? This is to you lib. :finger:

the 2 egg heads that live in the condo can stand on their deck like they do when the kids are there    they can watch them  heres to you egg heads
Posted by hymiebravo on Oct. 19 2013,6:42 pm
I haven't watched anybody skating down there this year. But I watched a bit last year. It just looked like a bunch of skaters and BMX type bike riders having fun.

Some of them were actually pretty acrobatic. It was kind of entertaining to watch really.

That's a pretty good spot for the place. It's fairly centrally located for the most part.

Moving it isn't the answer.

I vote to keep it right where it is.

Maybe the City could turn that decrepit old Walmart building at the Skyline Mall into a winter park of sorts.

For skaters and pickle-ball enthusiasts alike.

Perhaps throw in some horseshoe pits in there too.

People have been doing drugs in that area for years. I had "a friend" who dropped LSD with a few other guys in that lot but had to get out of there as soon as he looked down and saw a bunch of maggots crawling around right where someone dumped out an ashtray....

Man he had fun that night....

Posted by grassman on Oct. 24 2013,10:55 am

Funny you should mention the fair grounds as a comparison.  Maybe a couple of you oldtimers can help me out here.

Did not the county fair once have tractor pulls?  Stock car races?  I'm pretty sure they county got a lot of complaints from a few people about the noise.

There's a definite anti-egghead bias, here. Makes me wonder about twingroves' IQ...

Tractor pulls with lots of local talent, even in the modified classes, Joey Chitwood thrill show, I don't remember stock car but they had midgets and motorcycle flat track.

The county fair was indeed holding tractor pulls as late as 1995. I think that was the Sunday entertainment, and I believe at the time of day the tractor pull was held, admission was free.

I think they stopped having them when they moved the Demo Derby—their biggest draw at the time—to Sunday, which had been the day with the lowest attendance. They then started charging all day, since they knew people would come for the derby. That also opened up Tuesday night for another musical act.

Posted by pepi-lapew on Nov. 14 2013,7:37 am
The county decided it needed to suck as much money out of the people it could. Thats why most of the good stuf at the fair is gone? What they should do is have a free fair, and if people want to go to the grand stand to hear those nasel nose singers thy should pay for it. Instead of making the people pay that dont want to go to the grand stand. Thats why I have not been there for 40 yrs. nothing to go for?
Posted by twingroves on Nov. 14 2013,7:52 am
you are right they used to have thrill shows stock car races and people complained about the noise now we have nothing  the only reason I go is to eat   if  they put the park down buy the pool the people down there will bitch to heres to the bitchers :finger:

If they feel they need a skate park, want a bmx area and pickle ball area why don't they use what they have that is setting unused. The old Farmstead area. Close to the bike trail, no houses close and it would probably look a lot better than it does now. The only thing I have seen it used for is burning of debris by the city. They could have sold it but chose not to. So let them at least get some use out of it.

It was a little later than that.  I'm thinking 2003 was the last year??  They obviously had people from all over the midwest here.

For the reminiscing.  Here's the 2002 results compliments of the fishwrap.

I thought it might have gone later, but I wasn't sure. The reason I remembered 1995 is because my then-employer was a sponsor. I wasn't sure how long it had gone, but I knew it had been at least that long.

It was absolutely a money-grab to ditch the tractor pull and move the derby. However, given that they don't charge admission before 10 a.m. on Sunday (to allow a free church service), I wonder how much they actually make? Is the derby still well attended since the Jaycees left? I don't watch the demo derby, and I've heard it's not as good as it was before. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Are the stands as full as they once were for the demo derby?

We used to have lawn tractor pulls. Pretty neat, one guy shows up with a jet engine on one. ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!

First of all, what does this have to do with this thread? Second, how do you know the kid who stole the kettle doesn't use the skate park?
