After the 58-0 LOSS.

I wonder if the A.L. Head Coach & Game Officials had the same conversation as last week. On how close the game was and how the final score didn't reflect on how close the game really was after last weeks 42-7 LOSS.

I remember the four-year-plus losing streak and parents and coaches writing letters to the editor complaining that the Tribune dared to mention it in the paper, and how the Tribune was demoralizing the team.

You'd think the then-players grew up playing in "scoreless" leagues where everyone got a trophy at the end of the season. THIS is the end result of all-inclusive policies like that. We STILL can't win.

But as long as they're getting good grades in self-esteem and nobody does anything to disrupt that, let's keep the status quo.

Nope, they did not have that discussion. We got trampled just like everyone knew we would...including a lot of the team. But they showed up and took the field. I won't give you the soap box speech about them trying their best etc...but they did. Though the losing doesn't feel good, the kids do have fun knowing they are up against a ranked team. Go to a game...any game...and you will see the problem...numbers. Example...OW had 3 times the number of players on the sidelines. AL simply does not have, and never really has had, and kind of youth program, especially compared to other area communities.
Albert Lea High school does have some quality athletics and progams. Wrestling for example...respected and feared statewide...and a perrenial top ranked program with state appearances...unbelievable youth program. Hockey has not shared the same type of success, but still competitive, and again, starts with the youth program.
The kids that go out to play football know what they are up against, they play because they like football.
So, going to rip the band next? We used to have a large award winning marching band...now, well? Nobody wants to play trombone anymore. :soapbox:

Eleven band directors in 20 years will do that to a program.

perhaps i missed it, but was there a article in the sports page regarding the game? we were driving by hammer field awhile back & the team in full dress were jogging around the playing field & i commented to my wife there sure does not look like there are a lot of players out for the team. anyone know how many are  on the varsity team?

88 guys tried out for the B squard many, many years ago in the Big 9 school I attended....we probably had twice the enrollment AL now has.

Was I ripping the football team now? LOL I'm not the one giving interviews to the paper on how well we did after losing to a team by 35 points.

You can't blame enrollment numbers with their first game. They played a smaller school and still lost badly. I'm not saying our Tigers should be a power house. But they can be competitive.

the enrollment argument is crap.  wrestling wins with same enrollment year after year.  swimming is winning this year too.  football teams NEED TO LIFT WEIGHTS.  our football teams do not lift weights.  Waseca is smaller than we are and who won that game?  nothing like giving the job to someone that never won as an assistant and will not win as a head coach.

"14 years" as an assistant. Never once on a winning year. Third person interviewed, out of three, offered the job right after interviewing. Talked about how he wanted the kids to have fun. Well, who doesn't?

Ma Jeffrey is, and always was, a joke. Austin lost every game for the past two years. They fired their coach. Then they went out on a search to find a coach who had had success. When they hired him, he said he was going to teach them the fundamentals, how to tackle, how to block, how to move quicker. You watch where the Austin coach takes an arguable worst program over the next couple of years, compared to Jeffrey.

Quotes from Jeffrey after Saturdays loss at Faribault.  "The biggest thing the football team, and the other Albert Lea sports teams need to improve on in order to beat some of the bigger schools is to spend more time in the weight room".

“When you lift weights as an athlete you gain confidence in what you do and you gain strength overall,” Jeffrey said. “Our players need to make the investment. Our weight room needs to be the off season.”

Really?? Weight training and football.  There's a novel idea.  One would think that after 8 losing seasons(6 Clay Anderson years as an assistant and 2 years head coach) it would have registered a little sooner.  Should have been working on a weight training program rather than painting the fieldhouse and working on a new football helmet logo.

and it continues.... 0-6 this year.  Outscored 65-203.  5-20 since taking over and outscored 411-878.

At least they didn't lose as bad this year to Owattona. They only lost 23 -0.

OH WAIT! THEY ONLY PLAYED 6 MINUTES.

Looks like we need a fire Max Jeffrey post.  :D

I watched them practice a few weeks ago and could have sworn they were the JV until I was corrected.  Where's the beef?

Maybe the Tigers are competing at the wrong level. When was the last time they had a winning season? I normally disagree with lowering standards to the point they are already met, but this is a long streak of losing seasons. I'm not sure if it's due to fewer students enrolled (which translates to fewer players), or if the players were coddled too long before playing competitive football, or if the problem is in coaching — but there is clearly a problem. The question is — how can it be fixed?

Our football program is a joke compared to any of the schools surrounding us. Many of the districts are starting their kids in pads in the 4th grade and learning the fundamentals of the plays that they will be using through their highschool playing time. We don't start pads until 7th grade, you want to see something disheartening, go watch your son play his first game in 7th grade against a team like waseca where they've been in pads already for 3 years and learning to play as a team. It's tough to see.

Not a fan of our coach, his modo this year was to win 4 games, that's the message he sent to the players... Wow, lets really push ourselves boys, win a 1/3 of the games. But in his defense, how much do we pay a coach in AL for football? We probly pay next to nothing so you get what you pay for.

I agree that our kids should use the weight room more, but money is tight for a lot of families in this town and just having your kid in sports can get expensive at $150 a sport entry fee. Not to mention the cost of new cleets, gloves, etc. So they want the kids to use the weight room more in the off season and summer but to use it in the summer you have to pay an additional $80. Why don't they let kids who have paid for a sport during the year be able to use it for free to try and get some incentive for kids to go out for and stay in sports.

Rant done, stepping off the soap box.

what the program needs is someone(meaning a coach) who is willing to demand perfection.  to work in the off season.  weight training should be part of the program.  no lift, no play.  summer weights at the high school is $30 and free during the school year.  if you cant afford that, scholarships are available.  all of the posts here are valid.  what it comes down to is the football program needs a leader and it is obvious since 2004( 17-72 record) we have not had it.  the numbers do not lie.

Austin has a coach. This is his second year. He came from a successful program where he was a head coach. He said he would teach fundamentals, discipline, and then the kids would go out and have fun.

He also took over a program that had 20 consecutive losses.

Max Jeffrey got the job because he was a local good ole boy. Has been an assistant forever, for programs that never won. Was the third one interviewed for the job, and offered the job virtually as soon as he left the room. Chalmers the current athletic director, but not then, was on the committee to select the head coach (one of three). His track record as football coach hardly qualified him to make a choice.

Max said first, foremost and pretty that was it, he wanted the kids to have fun.  He runs a spread now supposedly pistol offense, without a good throwing quarterback and the necessary receivers.

They get blown out by unbelievable scores, but hey the kids are certainly having fun!

Albert Lea needs a coach who also gets to pick the coaches down the ladder into the younger ages. Build a program from the way up. Has good assistants (rather than hold onto one defensive coach who couldn't coach an NFL defense against a 5th grade opponent). Go to Glenville and Alden and get those scools into Albert LEa area football.
