Discrimination hearing will be set for former Mason City police officer

MASON CITY — A former Mason City police officer said Thursday two Mason City police officers and a retired DCI agent may have been involved in the abduction and possible murder of Jodi Huisentruit.

Further, she alleges police officials may be covering up what really happened by their failure to follow up on leads she has provided.

Maria Ohl, who was terminated from the police department last month, made the accusations while speaking to the media after aCivil Service Commission meeting at City Hall Thursday.

The commission set 9 a.m. Sept. 13 as a date for a hearing she requested concerning her termination.

Huisentruit, a KIMT morning anchor, disappeared in June 1995.

Ohl said she received credible information from an informant implicating Lt. Frank Stearns, Lt. Ron Vande Weerd and Bill Basler of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, who is now retired.

Ohl said she first received information in 2007 that police officers might have been involved in some way in the abduction. In 2009, she received further information.

To her knowledge, nothing has been done with the information she supplied.

She was put on paid administrative leave from the department last year and was terminated Aug. 4. Ohl said the reason given for her termination was her handling of the Huisentruit information.

“All I want is for the truth to come out. I’m trying to get it out in the open so it won’t be a secret any more,” she said.

“Never in a million years would I believe people would commit crimes they prosecute others on.

“It’s horrifically disturbing. They’re still working on the taxpayers’ dollar — the whistleblower was put on administrative leave and terminated.”

Police Chief Mike Lashbrook said, “With the pending civil service hearing and pending litigation, there a lot of things at play here that prohibit me from commenting at this time.”

City Administrator Brent Trout said, “The civil service hearing is public and will give both sides an opportunity to tell their sides.

“There will be a time when we may be able to discuss in detail the procedures the city took but there’s a process in place and it’s best now to allow it to play itself out before we comment.”

Stearns declined to comment, saying Lashbrook should be the Police Department’s spokesman.

Neither Vande Weerd nor Basler could be reached for comment.

Ohl, 36, grew up in Coulter. She joined the Police Department in 2001.

Last year, she filed claims of sex discrimination, religion discrimination and retaliation against the department with the Mason City Human Rights Commission and filed a lawsuit in federal district court.

In a deposition filed with the court, Ohl claims she was subject to ongoing harassment and discriminatory treatment because of her sex and denied  training and promotion opportunities.

She said she has repeatedly been subjected to inappropriate behavior, including a male officer pointing an unloaded gun at her head and pulling the trigger; and several instances of lewd language and gestures.

Ohl said Thursday the officer who pointed the gun at her was Sgt. Steve Klemas. She said the harassment began long before the Huisentruit case and has continued since then without any appropriate response to her complaints.

Regarding the religion discrimination, Ohl said in her deposition her church affiliation may have played a part in her being denied promotional opportunities. She said Thursday it also may have been a factor in the harassment she allegedly received.

Ohl is a member of Christian Fellowship Church which earlier this year was awarded nearly $85,000 in a settlement of a suit against the city, Lashbrook and Lt. Logan Wernet. It was filed by The Rev. Shane Philpott, church pastor.

The suit claimed both Lashbrook and Wernet made damaging remarks about the church.

The comments allegedly led to an Internal Revenue Service investigation of the church’s financial records. The IRS cleared Philpott and the church of any wrongdoing.

This woman is a nut if she's accusing Ron Vandeweerd of having anything to do with her disapearrance. I've been best friends with Ron since the 3rd grade, he was the best man in my wedding, and he wouldn't be capable of doing something like that.
Posted by Boomerrang on Sep. 01 2011,8:16 pm
I'm sure your buddy is a good guy and I hope it's not true about Ron. People change for the better and the worse in this world. Time will tell if your still right about your buddy Ron.
If this story is true he might of got sucked into something he never planned on.

You don't change. You're a moron, you've always been a moron, and you'll always be a moron.

I don't know if you knew Ron when we were younger, but ask anyone else from the neighborhood that knew Ron and they will all tell you that Ron wouldn't be capable of something like that.

I just knew Dodd and his older brother Chad. But we nicknamed Chad  " MORON. "

Yes, I knew Ron and I feel sorry for him that his name is tied in with this story if it's not true. This wouldn't be the first time that a person like him got in a situation like this.
I think your in SHOCK by reading his name in print. I just hope you don't have to eat your words.  GOOD DAY.

We? You didn't have any friends when you were a kid. Just like today you were a fat slob that people thought was mentally retarded, or mentally ill. That was the only thing that kept you from getting beat up on a daily basis as a kid. That and you were such a coward that you'd run to your grandma's house across from the park for protection.

You're still such a coward that you drive by my house and throw a sign on the boulevard about a Slinky and democrats. Not only are you a coward but you're a complete moron. I had a family gathering that afternoon and I took the sign with so we could all laugh about the moron that couldn't spell Slinky or Democrat (or even boomerang, for that matter).

Seriously, in all the years that I have lived in this town I've never heard a person say a good thing about you, and the fact that you aren't welcome at the YMCA, or on this forum says a lot about what kind of person you are.

There you go with the "we" again. Who's we?  It's not like you have any friends, except maybe at the Austin Y.

Watch the interview, she's basing this accusation on something someone said a couple years ago, and she says they had no motive, she has no evidence, and she essentially overheard a rumor, and then she didn't follow up? What kind of detective overhears something like that  and then doesn't follow up with the source?

It's convenient that she's blaming Ron who was the detective supervisor for many years, and Frank Stearns who is the current detective supervisor. It's also interesting that she didn't feel the need to go to the media with this information until after she was fired.

New allegations in Huisentruit case started with pastor

MASON CITY, Iowa — Allegations of possible police involvement in the abduction of Jodi Huisentruit did not start with former officer Maria Ohl but with her brother-in-law, the Rev. Shane Philpott of Christian Fellowship Church.

Maria OhlOhl, who was fired from the police department last month, said Thursday she supplied police with information possibly linking Lt. Ron Vande Weerd, Lt. Frank Stearns and former DCI agent Bill Basler with the abduction. She contends police never followed through on her tips.

Huisentruit, a morning anchor with KIMT television, disappeared in June 1995 and is presumed dead.

Ohl, a 10-year member of the Mason City Police Department, was fired in August. She filed an appeal with the Mason City Civil Service Commission in an effort to be reinstated. She made her allegations regarding police misconduct when she talked to the media after a Civil Service meeting Thursday.

But Philpott said allegations of police misconduct came to his attention four years ago.

In a certified letter sent to city officials on May 27, Philpott said he received a phone call from someone in Minnesota on June 28, 2007, who claimed to have information on the disapperance and death of Huisentruit. The caller did not tell Philpott names of any officers.

The caller said because his information incriminated certain Mason City police officers, he didn’t want to meet or talk with local authorities. He chose to contact Philpott after watching the pastor’s “Faith in Action” television program, said Philpott.

The pastor said he wanted to go through proper channels so he contacted his sister-in-law, Officer Ohl, the next day. She told him to contact the police department so as to comply with proper procedures.

Philpott said, “The reason for my concern about the details of the information was that it was vaguely reminiscent of information told to me in the summer of 1999 by Mason City resident Gerald Best at the completion of a church service.

“Mr. Best had mentioned local officers possibly being involved in criminal activities. Mr. Best was found murdered later that year and his homicide is yet unsolved to this day.”

Gerald Best was found dead in his Mason City apartment on Dec. 30, 1999. His throat had been slashed.

Philpott said he contacted police on July 3 or July 5 of 2007 and talked first with Stearns and then with Vande Weerd. He was told not to talk to anyone else and said they would get back to him.

Jodi HuisentruitAfter a month passed with no contact, Philpott said he called police on Aug. 6 of 2007 and spoke again with Stearns. He said Stearns transferred him to Capt. Dennis Bengston who told him his information wasn’t credible.

A little over two years later, in September 2009, Philpott and his church filed a defamation suit against the city of Mason City and police officers on an unrelated matter.

In preparing for litigation in that case, lawyers requested contact logs and discovered there was no record of Philpott’s contacts with police in the Huisentruit case.

Philpott said in September 2010, as part of the litigation in the civil suit, Ohl gave a deposition in which she mentioned the Huisentruit information Philpott provided police in 2007.

“At that moment, Chief Lashbrook suddenly shuts down the deposition through his attorneys and Officer Ohl is unable to complete her testimony,” said Philpott.

He said the next day, Ohl came to the church office, at the request of Lashbrook, to get the information Philpott had provided police in 2007 so she could once again give it to them.

But Philpott said he had been told there was to be no contact between litigants in the court case outside of their attorneys. So he declined to give Ohl the information. Philpott then contacted his attorney, Melissa Hasso, who told him to turn over his information to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Ohl informed Lashbrook of what had transpired. Not long after that, she was put on paid administrative leave and was terminated on Aug. 4.

Ohl said Thursday she was fired because of her handling of the Huisentruit information.

A Civil Service hearing on her appeal to be reinstated will start at 9 a.m. Sept. 13 in the second floor conference room at City Hall.

She has also filed suit in federal district court in Sioux City, claiming sex discrimation, religion discrimination and retaliation.

In the suit, she claims she was passed over for training and promotions because of her gender and says she was subjected to harassment in the form of lewd remarks and gestures and, in one instance, an officer pointed an unloaded gun at her head.

She said some of the alleged inappropriate behavior might have stemmed from her church’s lawsuit against the department.

She said another factor might be that she had ticketed two officers’ wives for traffic violations.

They were Stearns’ wife and the wife of Logan Wernet, one of the litigants in the church’s lawsuit against the department.

Ohl said Thursday she is disturbed that Stearns and Vande Weerd are still working “and the whistleblower was put on administrative leave and terminated.”

City officials have declined to comment because of the pending litigation.

The Civil Service hearing is open to the public.

This is so terrible. I don't know if anyone remembers this but I do. Ron was very troubled by this case not being solved. He was even on 20/20 requesting evidence. He had many interviews with the media. For years he was trying to find out more and followed many leads, which turned out unsuccessful.

I feel sorry for both Ron, his family and Huisentruits family that have to go through this. I'm sure they worked closely with Ron on the case and now they have to go through this.

There is an interesting forum on this case: < www.findjodi.com > to bring back some thoughts on the case. I wonder what she was doing for a story lead, as long as that friend of hers was found murdered(pruitt) and she turned up missing only three weeks later.
Sad story!

DES MOINES - The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation released a statement Friday night in response to allegations of possible police involvement in the abduction of Jodi Huisentruit.

The press release stated that the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Mason City Police Department continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Huisentruit in 1995.

Throughout the investigation numerous leads have been investigated and hundreds of interviews have been conducted. To date there has been no credible information or evidence received by investigators that implicates any current or former DCI agents or Mason City police officers in the disappearance of Huisentruit, the press release said.

Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation the public is encouraged to contact the Mason City Police Department or the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation if they have any information regarding the disappearance of Huisentruit.

Interesting twist to this whole story!
The Reverend WON an $85,000 settlement AGAINST
LASHBROOK, the city and Wernet in a defamation suit.  Exactly how credible does that make Lashbrook?
Plus the judge in that case stated Wernet had
[a wreckless disregard for the truth] (unquote)
Had to have had proof of wrong-doing to win the settlement!!
Too many coincidences involved with this case!

God, you're an idiot. She was a morning news anchor that read the news to the camera, not some investigative reporter out there looking for stories. :dunce:

Cite your source for this insight into her career.  How do you know for certain that she was satisfied to be "just a morning news anchor that reads the news to the camera" and not something more.  She could very well have been working on something.  But then again we will probably never know.  Because if the MCPD followed normal procedure, her apartment and vehicle would have been sealed off from outsiders other than those investigating the crime.   Would give them ample opportunity  to locate and dispose of any notes of an unbecoming story about local PD misconduct.  Granted this is just a theory, not something I put a lot of time into, but just as plausible as your "He couldn't have possibly done anything like that, he's just not that type of guy." theory.  I prefer to keep an open mind and think that ANYTHING is possible, using logic and reasoning, instead of feelings.

Satisfied? I don't care if she was "satisfied", and I never said either way. If you think she was killed by police officers to stop her from reporting on some big story then you've watched way too many episodes of Charlie's Angels.

Like what? Don't you think that if she was working on something she'd tell a friend or coworkers? When was the last time you've seen an "investigative" report done on the local stations?

It seems that her co-workers suspect this creeper.

And according to this guy, and Wikipedia there was quite a struggle. I doubt that an armed police officer would struggle for that long to to get a small woman under control.

It really sad to think that if this guy would have dialed 911 or even just looked out his window things may have turned out differently.

Hmmm a close friend of hers went missing and was found murdered 3 weeks after Jodi disappeared.  Then the guy that starts talking about how the cops are corrupt and should be looked into gets murdered and nothing has happened with that investigation.  Sounds a little fishy to me.  And again instead of refuting what I said you have to attack me.  Normal ops for you.
