If our "old" lights are good enough for New Richland to update, then why aren't they good enough for us to do the same?

Because they weren't in the sketch the Streetscape consultants drew up, silly! We'll have to replace them someday anyway, so we might as well replace them now. :sarcasm:

On a different note, I've been thinking about running for public office. Is my statement above about right for what seems to be their line of thinking?  :D

Because your city is run by a bunch of uneducated, self serving, proselytizing morons, who seem to think that Albert Lea is swimming in cash, when in fact they are draining the pool leaving stagnant water behind.

I don't think they're as dumb as you're telling us. I think they know exactly what they're doing, and they just don't care. They've made it all about themselves.

Boy, do I get tired of THAT reasoning.

I think that's one of the things that actually keeps us from growing. It makes us a stop along the way instead of a destination. Easy on, easy off - while travelers continue on their way to somewhere else.

We did think that way, back when they were building the thing...

Now look - even US highways are purposely bypassing towns. US 14 goes around more towns then it goes through, anymore. That has to suck for businesses.

A.L. was far better before the Interstate Highway System. So were a lot of places.

I think Pixar represented it well in the movie Cars with their use of the James Taylor song Our Town

No it wasn't, the interstate helped by making it easier to get out of hillbilly land.

I don't know how many here remember what a vibrant place Albert Lea was prior to the Interstates. I do.

Everything that passed through the area, from any direction, had to go through town.

Every storefront downtown was occupied. Every one.

You actually had to wait for the light to walk across Main, at Broadway, or at Newton, for that matter.

Somehow, the new intersection of two of the most significant highways in the U.S., so close to town, was to be a boon to Albert Lea, but the civic leaders of the time were unable or unwilling to cash in on that potential.

Des Moines Ia. Has the same logistics, seems not to be a problem there.

You are right SB the city fathers did some planning for the time ahead.  are city leaders did the planning for the past! They don't think ahead?
