Why 'Hail to the Chief' remains unsung

Most people are probably unaware that it even has lyrics.

We're accustomed to hearing the United States Marine Band play the stirring, brass-heavy chords as the president comes into sight.

Why are the words to the song seldom sung?

When you read them, it's easy to surmise one possible reason. In our hyper-partisan times, it would be unrealistic to assume that members of the party out of power would want to enthusiastically belt them out.
Take this year, for example. Try to envision the television pictures of Inauguration Day, were "Hail to the Chief" expected to be sung by all the attendees.

President Obama appears from inside the Capitol, some of the TV cameras focus on Republican congressional leaders John Boehner or Mitch McConnell or Eric Cantor -- and they are presumed to wish to ardently vocalize:

"Hail to the Chief we have chosen for the nation,

Hail to the Chief! We salute him, one and all,

Hail to the Chief, as we pledge cooperation

In proud fulfillment of a great, noble call.

Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,

This you will do, that's our strong, firm belief.

Hail to the one we selected as commander,

Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!"

Kind of sad what has happened to our governmental body isn't it.

Yep, getting sadder by the minute. :(

It kind of reminded me of Best Buy just before Black Friday with all the faithful followers of Obama gathering in the wee morning hours before his inauguration.  Many of them had spent the night in the National Mall defying the No Camping ban just to get front row for the event.

Here's a shot of them just before dawn.

Well I don't know if I can enlighten that dim of a bulb, but here I'll try. The Congress and Senate has become more about winning the argument, than doing what is right. How did I do? :;):

Well, after the Bush and Cheney era, people would be willing to follow anyone. Right? Except for the ones that was getting their pockets filled already, of coarse. Doi! I have to admit, I am not happy with either party fully. How can an intelligent person be. One thing about the Dems, they might be fleecing the public but the Republicans take the regular public right to the slaughter.

Pepe as I have stated in previous posts...
he is not my president!  I didnt vote for this mess in 08 or in 12!
My comment about what does it matter at this point anyway is a direct quote from Clinton to Congress regarding Benghazi where 4 Americans were killed!  Cannot believe more people are not outraged at her comment.  Like it has been said just imagine if during Watergate Nixon would have said, What does it matter anyway...we wont do it again!  Or with WMD Bush would have said, What does it matter anyway...we were misinformed!!
agree with you about the girl thing

Did you stop being an American when Obama was inaugurated?  If so, you can always renounce your citizenship and make it official.

Did you watch the actual testimony between her and Senator Johnson?  Would it matter to you whether they were killed over a youtube video or a parking space?

Grassman had a point about the difference under Obama vs. under Bush.  Several thousand die on our soil on 9/11, warnings were ignored and ratings GO UP for Bush.  Four die in Benghazi under Obama and you claim it's HIS fault and blame Clinton for not knowing why fast enough.

Here's why Santorini:  They hate us because we're free.  They don't understand what it's like to celebrate Christmas.  And you're either with us or against us.   :p  :sarcasm:

Thousands die in N.Y. and D.C. and your side of the isle congratulates Bush for "keeping us safe," but Benhazi is compared to Watergate.  How's that for a double standard.

Posted by Common Citizen on Jan. 28 2013,8:30 am
Are we talking about why it happened or what could have been done to have prevented it?

Two very different things.

But then you're ok with people in leadership positions pointing fingers at others and making excuses unless they are a CEO with a golden parachute, right?

You hold our government and union leaders to a lesser standard than corporate CEO's and that's sad.

...nuff said.

Uhh, no. Not when they ping-pong between executive jobs at Monsanto and G.D. Searle to cabinet and senior government agency jobs. These people know EXACTLY what they're doing. The only clueless bunch in this equation is comprised of constituents that still hang on to the notion that these people are actually looking out for their best interests.

Rep. Jo Ann Emerson leaving Congress to join top campaign donor

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.), freshly reelected to her ninth term in Congress, announced Monday that she would resign in February and become the president and chief executive of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Assn., the top donor to her campaigns during her congressional career.

Emerson, who was elected to her late husband Bill Emerson’s seat in a 1996 special election and was the first woman to represent Missouri in the House, handily won reelection earlier this year over Democratic rival Jack Rushin with nearly 72% of the vote. One of the few women to hold Republican leadership positions in Congress, Emerson was chairwoman of the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee and sat on the House Appropriations Committee.
The electric cooperative, a prominent spender in congressional races nationwide with more than $1.8 million donated during the latest election cycle, and a sizable amount spent on lobbying efforts, voted Monday to appoint Emerson. Over the course of her congressional career, the cooperative donated a total of nearly $80,000 to Emerson’s campaign efforts, making it her top donor.

In paperwork filed Monday, Emerson’s office said that negotiations for her new job began Nov. 19, after the election. House ethics guidelines on what sorts of negotiations for post-congressional employment are permitted are nebulous.

“I am not leaving Congress because I have lost my heart for service – to the contrary – I see a new way to serve,” Emerson said in a statement. “I did not go seeking this opportunity, but I am excited about the new challenge it offers to find ways to promote strong rural policy.”

“Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson has been a great leader and tireless public servant for the people of the 8th District,” Missouri Republican Party Chairman David Cole said in a statement. “She is a beloved member of the community, and we know that, in or out of government, she will continue her service to the people of Southeast Missouri.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee cast Emerson’s departure in a different light, calling it “a sign that no moderates are welcome in the Tea Party House Republican caucus.”

“Congresswoman Emerson saw the writing on the wall from this election – it’s better to ditch the Tea Party Republican Congress than to stand behind it,” Jesse Ferguson, committee spokesman, said, referring to the Emerson's reputation as a moderate.

Republicans have recently come under fire for initially including no women in their 19 committee chairmanships for the 113th Congress, before appointing Rep. Candice S. Miller (R-Mich.) as the chairwoman of the House Administration Committee on Friday. And despite the appointment of Rep. Cathy McMorriss Rodgers (R-Wash.) as conference chairwoman, there are still just four women among the 36 newly elected Republican freshmen.

The process for replacing Emerson will begin in February, with Democratic Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon setting the date for an election at least 10 weeks in the future. The 8th Congressional District GOP and Democratic Committees will then meet to select their candidates to run in the special election.

She is becoming a lobbyist. As is her daughters. Why did she run in the first place? This is going to cost the taxpayers millions for the new election. We need to do away with lobbyists all together. At least make it law, once you serve you will not become.
