Hi everyone!  I moved here to go to school and am having trouble meeting people in the "20-somethings" age group.  Are there any churches or organizations around that I could get some exposure to people my age?  I'm hoping to find some opportunities to volunteer this summer.  Any suggestions?

Welcome and Good Luck.. Most "20 somethings" leave this town. You might want to consider meeting people at the school your attending or consider volunteering at our many rest homes.

Get out while you still can, save yourself and your soul.  The whole city is nothing but one big tax black hole.

*EDIT*  I would have said the town was just one big succubus, but she left.

Grinning Dragon is really Cornholio..

Geez, it isn't that bad in good old AL.  Disregard  the Dragon.

Sorry to hear you aren't meeting people.  Are there any clubs at school?  You might want to visit Holiday Lanes for weekend fun.   Try volunteering.  Attend church services.  Walk around the lake.

I'm old, so forgive    me if these are boring suggestions.  Good luck.

You did mention churches (OP) - I would think there would be quite a few younger people attending Crossroads Church. They have a lot of activities that appeal to a younger crowd.

And welcome to Albert Lea. We don't have what Mankato or Rochester has to offer socially, but contrary to what some may believe, there are people who are happy here, or who at least make the best of it while they are here.

Okay, thanks for the welcomes and suggestions. :)  one more question: What's there to do, places to take a 2 year old?

There are a lot of parent-and-toddler activities in the Community Education flyer that comes out every few months. If you don't have one, you could maybe call the District 241 offices, or visit the Brookside Center (round building, used to be a school, on Brookside Drive). I'm not sure if those are day care or parent-and-child activities since I don't have children, but I know they have something.

Way to welcome people into Albert Lea and your forum! This is the exact reason why 90% of Teens/Adults leave this town. Good for you all!   :woohoo:

I think the only negative reply was GD, and he lives in N.O. he doesn't  know any better. At least he didn't take a shot at her.

Yea, that was the first thing I saw and it just gets old real quick.

D's got a good point though. Could you imagine your daughter and/or granddaughter (or both in this case) moving to town and this is where she looks to learn a lil' about AL. UFF-DA!

Roxy, welcome. AL is a great place to keep active. Many great parks for you and your daughter to keep fit and stay healty. As for 20 something entertainment... There's I-35 and I-90 that lead out of town. I'm not being negative. I grew up here and moved back and know that AL won't let me down if I trust her to be what she is. It's also a good spot to start your own small business while trying to find a decent job here; get some ideas going don't be afraid to run with them!

Take care.

Yeah it is all Al.com's fault.  It is not the poor leadership, lack of jobs, and outrageous taxes!  :p
That being said, AL, in itself isn't a bad town.  Houses are affordable.  Just not much for employment...
And in the end, that is why I am Glad I Left.

Other than the Dragon's comments, I thought we all were trying to be helpful.

I wonder if any Chamber member is reading and has some suggestions?  You'd think there would be an enterprising individual who could create a business that caters to this age group.

I'm just wondering if Hoffman has sent a PM with his phone number to her yet. ???

Married the woman of my dreams!
Off the market since July 1 2009...
(and I never had to give out my number  :D )

Glads right though. Jobs and leadership is a, if not THE, problem. Compounding that is a group of people NOT doing anything about it or just making things worse by not even trying. Decisions are made by those who show up.

So Hair makes a great point that a good biz person would see the need and try and build on that. An educated and enterprising individual could be of value if they have tough enough skin to give it a go.  :peaceout:

I was sincere when I said I35 and I90 leading out of town are a good thing.

Many good real estate studies show the best spots to buy are at the 90 miles away from a major metro area radius mark. Less crime, lower housing costs and the ability to be anywhere, or on your way there, within less than 2 hours because of int'l Airports.

I35 and I90 don't bring people to us, it makes it easier for us to get to them. Owatonna cuts us off from all the "Cities Traffic" by having better connections to Mankato and Rochester. Even shown by the discussion of bringing Light Rail to Roch, possibly via Owatonna, and on to Chicago. I35 and I90 are better for us than "them."

So this new gal has a safe, affordable place to now live and can be anywhere North, South, East and West in a modest amount of time with out having to live in Mpls, Roch, Mankato or Mason City and pay the higher price for lesser home costs.

There isn't "much to do here" and there doesnt have to be; we can get anywhere easier than most and we have options in every direction. This is a great place to lead a healty life style, to work on retiring through passive income and contemplate good investments.

We haven't even came close to seeing the "bottom" of this poor market yet. We won't until from late 2014 to about 2017. What little "bump" or upward turn in the economy many mistake as improvement or growth is the "bounce" effect. Like thowing a cat or a ball off of a set of stairs; it bounces before it rests at the bottom.

That being said; right here in sunny AL Mn is where I'm going to ride things out for a while and it's a nice spot for this new gal too. :)

Roxy does your rockstar handle indicate possible musician talent, if so, on Thursday nights I host Eddies Unplugged it is for all musicians to come to Eddies and share their musical talent and socialize. The ages of people attending are 21 to 60. Musicians share a common ground, age will never gap. That is Thursday Nights at Eddie's Bar on Marshall St.

Is that why judges, lawyers, doctors, nurses, construction workers, media communications professionals, factory workers and the working poor and yes even a few men of the cloth, grace our doors I never thought they were there to see how the scum of the earth exist.

It's defiantly not for the charming atmosphere or the zeal and promptness of the cheerful bartender..
Why doesn't Pat spring for a couple gallons of paint and do something about the tobacco stained ceiling and walls, it's a dive..

I moved to Albert Lea nine years ago at the age of 22 and my son was 9mos old. There are plenty of parks to go too and meet other parents with children close in age. I personally don't feel that for the size of town the only option is to leave. Usually people that grew up in an area do not or cannot see what interesting things or places are close by. Go to the CVB and get a vistors guide. Even the locals would find it interesting IMHO.

If you want it dirty, she's usually at Eddies singing karaoke!

People come to Eddie's because their favorite beverage has been untainted. Questionable behavior is not tolerated. Promptness of the bartender? If we know what you drink, it is waiting for you before you get to the bar. Friendliness is earned, not a service.

It is hard to keep a smile on your face when people come into the bar half intoxicated and acting like they are bullit proof. Their intelligence level is reducede to the point they order a 5 drink order for themselves and their friends of Bud Light one at a time. As a customer, I find the person that waits on me is a reflection of the attitude I project to them.
