HyVee considering Austin for a main supply hub because of easy access to the interstate and a workforce..

Why not Albert Lea? We are located at the I-35 and I-90 intersection and also have a workforce friendly area..

Does ALEDA have any balls or are they a bunch of pussy's?

Why not Albert Lea?

Because after 40 plus years of weak leadership AL has turned into a sh!thole.

At least Albert Lea's drivers staring at their phones are only going 30. Instead of 75 like they are on various clogged freeways in the so called "Twin Cities" area. hahahaha

Or the older ones looking at their phones driving 30 onto the freeways.

Gotta luv you truckers there. . . who drift over the lines. . . as well.

What pros.

Build it and they will come...

^^ Ray Liotta going to visit??

But I suppose more accurately, tax the sh!t out of them and they will leave.

Posted by Glad I Left on Sep. 18 2017,11:58 am
the younger ones will leave but most of the elderly can't afford to leave.  It's a dying town with no real prospects that I can see.
Get out while the gettings good I say.

AL real estate will probably hit a nasty level then some enterprising  folks (maybe LeFarvre) will start buying it up, turn AL into a bedroom community.

Looks like AL couldn't have afforded HyVee

On the bright side maybe AL could be absorbed as a suburb.

We offered them 10' s of millions and it didn't work? Did we explain we had a full time fire department, new school, and courthouse?

Albert Lea's leadership is replete with useless idiots. Austin's leadership is replete with slightly less useless idiots. That was enough to make a difference, I guess.

Austin's last two attempts at bitchfest discussion forums died off when Facebook came to town. Albert Lea's rolls on. People notice that sort of thing.

The Tribune publishes every conviction from jaywalking to speeding. Plus you have frequent visits to the Wayne and Paul Wingnut Show. The Herald reserves column inches for mostly upbeat pro-Austin/Hormel/Mayo junk, with a smattering of felon-in-possession-of-a-firearm-related stories. Kind of odd, the very different editorial styles of two newspapers that are owned by the same outfit. Nevertheless, people notice that, too.

In short, lousy leadership, and a bad image.

There's a lot of factors involved in locating warehousing for perishable goods, shelf-life on fresh meat is short, Hormel's location had more to do with HyVee's decision than any local Government.

The close proximity to the Hormel plant cuts transportation cost and increases shelf-life.

Austin has some say in their Utility costs, SMMPA may have cut a deal that Freeborn/Mower couldn't match. who knows..

It does irk me that we have to give Corporations large gift packages to get them to locate locally.
It's similar to the pro-sports teams that extort new stadiums from the taxpayer.

Your understanding of logistics and warehouse management is staggering, (see idiota)  :dunce:

The amount of products Hormel produces at the Austin plant is insignificant when compared to the products an average grocery store carries and especially where a distribution center like HyVee is concerned.

Also, though electricity is a major cost consideration, warehouse utilities have become extremely efficient where building new facilities is concerned. LED lighting, in floor heating, the list goes on. Labor costs are dramatically decreased too ( I wonder if there will be a union)
