Among the new laws according to: < KAAL (link) >QUOTE PART-TIME POLICE Part-time police officers will become a thing of the past under a law that took effect Monday. Law enforcement agencies can no longer hire part-time officers. Current part-timers - the state has 175 of them - can keep their jobs until they retire, but they can't move to new agencies. Supporters of the law said it was necessary to professionalize the state's police officers. I can easily see both sides of this issue. Essentially the license was less about number of hours and more about allowing departments to operate without POST certified officers. Some departments were made up almost entirely of part time status officers due to county structures that allowed "supervision" of part time county or small city departments by only a couple POST certified officers patrolling larger cities, sometimes 50 miles or more away in some of the larger counties up north. Here are what the requirements were to obtain or keep part-time status: This applies to peace officers only. Part-time peace officers must meet the requirements enumerated under "Becoming an officer" - part-time peace officer. In order to be licensed as a part-time peace officer, a candidate must meet the following requirements: 1) Sponsored by a law enforcement agency. 2) 80 hours pre-service training or equivalent. 3) Selection standards, see Minn. Rules 6700.1101 4) Licensing test 5) Employment as a part-time peace officer 6) Restricted hours and supervision by a licensed peace officer.
