Musclebikes were named as such because their design and popularity coincided with musclecars of the era. The name stems from mid 60's to early 70's musclecars like the Mustang, GTO, and corvette.

The freakiest thing is the first bike, I owned the exact one. My favorite bike was stolen from my front yard and I was mad that was the bike I chose afterwards at the coast to coast store. My one that got stole was a metallic blue with a sissy bar, Best bike in town. Guess the losers that stole it thought so too unfortunately

I'll be damned! Yes, that's correct. I picked out the orange and black (Halloween colors) at Coast to Coast gas station. Huffy made bikes for them and Sears among others. They were the Schwinn Stingrays primary competition.

I've bought about 20 bikes over the Winter and have a blue metallic one like the purple bike pictured. Here's brand new mint Stingray freshly assembled out of the over 30 year old box. This bike was recently purchased for $3000.

Minnow - cool bikes.  I had a light metalic blue with white trim 3-speed rail job also from from coast to coast - paid about $60 for it sometime around 1969 I think.  It had a slick for a back tire.  Rode it till it wasn't cool to ride bikes anymore - then we hitch hiked.  Wish I had a pic of it to post :(
