I heard on the radio the other day that the American Bald Eagle is making such a strong come-back from extinction, that officials are speculating taking it off the endangered species list this year.  :D As you can imagine, I see a lot of wild life while doing my job. I have noticed over the past 3-5 years that the numbers of mated adults has risen quite a bit.   Even the yearling babies are an impressive size by the time they fend for themselves. They are a magnificent site to see. A couple of years ago, an adult flew just a few feet in front of my truck. I literally stood on my brake pedal. The last thing I wanted was jail time for killing an Eagle. Besides, I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself. Anyway, his wing span covered more than my windshield. (Isn’t it funny what you remember when there’s tire smoke flying around you. )

I used to live up north on 40 acres. Out back there was some woods, and in those woods lived Eagles ... they were beautiful to say the least. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill them.

I don't think an endangered species means you would go to jail for accidently hitting it if it was doing the "cha-cha" in the middle of the highway. I "think" being endangered means you can not hunt them or intentionally kill them. No one would expect you to risk your life to save a birds life truckwriter94.

That's the funny thing about me. I'd rather ditch a quarter million $ worth of product and truck, than hit anything bigger than a badger. I've killed 7 deer and it tore me up each time. Don't get me wrong. It's not like I couldn't keep driving after picking up the grill chunks off the highway. I've just become a lot easier to affect emotionally, since my kids were born. Shhhhhh! Don't tell my wife.....

I hear ya truckwriter94 ... I am the one that is stopped in town so the ducks and their babies can walk across the street. I ran over a squirl once and it made me sick ... thought about it for a long time. I know they are small and not like hitting a dear, but it's still a little life  :(

Can't you get a ticket for hitting a duck in AL?
If it's breathing I don't want to hit it.  Except mosquitoes!! Sh*t I swerve for frogs and catipillars!  Not into other lanes or anything dangerous.

If it's an accident I hope they don't ticket you! I guess I don't know the rules in Albert Lea as far as ducks go. Anyone know for sure?

Speaking of frogs .... I remember when I was a kid living up in the cities my mom was driving us kids home from a drive in movie. It was pouring rain ... frogs everywhere ... you couldn't help but run them over. They became like ice under the car ... you could hear them ... it was soooooooo gross!! The car started to slip a little ... mom got scared and slowed way down. I never saw anything like that since then. I'm sure truckwriter94 has come across the slippery frogs in his travels!

Yes, that’s gross. Especially when you can hear them jumping and hitting the bumper. Eeeeewwwww!! They can be worse than driving on a bed of sleet.
The worse thing I’ve ever encountered is a bull! It was dawn and a pure white bull had somehow gotten out of his pen.  :O It was foggy like one of those beautiful pictures you’d see in an outdoor life magazine. Anyway, here I am driving full bore down a 2-lane country road when I see this albino bull in charge mode. It was freaky. All I could imagine was his massive horns protruding through my radiator. I immediately slammed on my brakes and started flashing my headlights. I got the truck down to about 35 MPH and around 30 feet between us when he must have decided I was bigger than he was. Luckily, he walked off the road. I had to pull over and compose myself. It took me about 5 minutes to catch my breath. As you can imagine, I tell that story when a bunch of drivers stand around trying to impress each other. It never fails.
Just a side note. If you injure or kill an animal that can be profited from, you must fill out an insurance accident form, or the owner can sue you for the market value of the animal. Either way, you end up paying for the animal you’ve already hurt or killed. Yes, even if they are out of their protective pens or off their leashes, etc. ???

Spidey, I know exactly what your talking about with the frogs. When I was a kid we lived towards the edge of town by a swamp.  I was walking home at dusk and there were frogs everywhere. I had to scoot my feet not to step on them but scatter them out of the way.  It reminded me of one of those movies about the apocalypse. :D

Sidebar truckwriter.  In AL if a dog is off it's leash and you hit it or it bites.  The dog owner has to pay you if they're are any damages.  Cuz of the leash law.

As crooked as Shelly is (AL dog catcher), I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up working out against you, no matter how much it wasn't your fault.
