I was recently driving through Wisconsin when I heard something very interesting on the radio. Some large Union or government group is trying to get a Tax Payer Bill of Rights passed for Wisconsin. If they get what they want, it will cap Politician perks and Government spending. It will require a citizen vote to go over budget, even for emergencies.
Personally, I think Politicians should have their salaries capped at $45k per year and their ability to give themselves raises should be stripped from them. I don’t think they should even make that much, but everybody’s got to live. I think they should be capped like that, plus be required to get citizen votes for a lot of the things they do. Politicians and our $ just don’t mix. Most of them are Millionaires before they get to office, so they’ve already lost the necessity to care about every dime. What do they care about State or National debt, or Social Security benefits? I think they should be capped until there is no such thing as Homeless people. I can understand unemployed. Not everyone is cut out to work either mentally or physically. No one wants to be Homeless. If things were changed like that, we would get politicians in office that actually care where our Society is going and not how much self-publicity they can get.
Anyway, is there anything like that in MN?

There is an organization striving to do just that.  The Taxpayers League of Minnesota.  Trying to follow much of the guidelines of TABOR, which is active in Colorado.  Check out the site here: Taxpayer's League

Amen Truckwriter94, totally agree. On the subject of pay, I have to disagree with you though. Here is what I would do, as I think 45,000 is to much.
One of two options.
1. They make what ever the average income is for their state. I promise you it aint 45,000. That way, if they want more money, they gotta make it better for everyone.
2. They make a certain percentage higher than minimum wage. But it has to stay at that level. If they give themselves a raise, they have to raise the minimum to stay within the law.

But you are right, who ever gave them the power to give themselves a raise? O, I remember now, they did!

Maddog, I completely forgot about the MN Taxpayer’s league.

Hoosier, on MSN today, there was one of those click-your-state pictures of the US. It had to do with the best towns to profit in business. (Madison, WI is #1 if you’re curious.) (Moving on) I clicked on MN and our average income was over $51K. I think they must have only surveyed people living in the Twin Cities. So, I don’t think Politicians deserve to get that much.

I think you might be right about it being the cities. I may be wrong, but I cant imagine that the average income for all Minnesotans is over 50,000.

Anyone have answer to this?

According to the Minnesota 2000 census, the average median household income is $47,111.  For Freeborn county, it's $36,964.  We actual make more than Mower County who comes in at $36,654.

I may be way out in left field here ... but if we were to lower their salaries too much, who would take the position? I think 45 or 50 is good along with some other perks. You have to keep it interesting or we will have Hecktor, Larry and Moe running ... who ya gonna vote for?

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. These stinkin’ Millionaires didn’t get that kind of money by taking the regular jobs. You have to learn to stomp on other people (without letting them realize it) to get anywhere in this society. I couldn't do the job no matter what the salary. I'm too easily irritated and willing to show it.
