Christmas before last my daughter got a little scooter for a gift. From the minute she opened it I could tell it needed an engine on it and for the next 6-7 months everytime she rode the scooter I would think to myself that it needed an engine.
I had a weedeater engine but couldn't figure out a drive system for the 12" wheels and then In July I was at the bike shop and ran into this kid that had put an engine on a similar scooter with his dads help using a spindle drive. So, I headed home and recruited my neighbor and his wire feed welder to weld a couple of brackets to the scooter and then went to the hardware store and bought a 1 inch pipe nipple to use for a spindle drive.
It worked out pretty good and with a GPS strapped to the handlebars it reached speeds of 34 mph with me riding it(180lbs) and gets around 90-100mpg. I'm not sure what the maximum weight it could pull is but I have a friend that weighs around 220 and it had no problem pulling him. But he did have a bit of a problem fitting on it so I would guess if you can fit on it, it will pull you.
It had a really small board to stand on so I bought an $8 skateboard and used that as a base and then welded a seat tube from a bike so that you could use a seat to sit down or still ride it standing up.
I made those changes after my 62 year old father fell off the board going about 5mph and landed on his forehead. He wasn't wearing a helmet and it was nearly fatal. They flew him over to St. Mary's and by the time the family got there they told us that they expected him to be dead within a few hours. He ended up pulling through but he spent about a month over there and he still suffers from some brain damage but he gets better everyday.
My oldest daughter uses it now(supervised with a helmet) and I'll ride it short distances but people tend to laugh at a six foot tall guy with piercings and tattoos riding a kids scooter with a weedeater engine strapped to it.
At nearly 100 mpg though just think how far $2 will get you (even if you look a little silly getting there).

I borrowed a little electric scooter one day last summer. That was the biggest pile of junk I've ever rode on. If I was going uphill I could only do about 1 mph, if the hill was steep, I had to get off and start pushing. It even had turning signals, and this little high pitched horn. I was riding around different residential neighborhoods, and everyone was laughing at me. I'm about 6 foot 1, 170 pounds, everyone that drove by was staring, even little 10 year old kids were laughing at me. There is only so much embarrassment a person is willing to take to save money on gas.
